I can't really tell which is it in this case.

But people tell me sometimes they don't understand when I speak properly, but should I say "yuh unnastanin meh now orr?" they comprehend in a heartbeat.

She is enthusiastic about what she's doing and I must admit her information is interesting. However, I don't understand why Trinidadians believe that speaking properly means putting on an American accent. Yes we all have accents and the Trinidadian accent is a very beautiful one so why not use it?
Also, I can never understand why when the topic of good speech comes up people jump on the

train. When we went to school I am sure our teachers didn't teach us to speak with our dialect alone instead we were taught Standard English which is the generally accepted model of speech.
Bad English glossed with a fake accent doesn't make it good English.
