POLICE from the Stolen Vehicles Squad (SVS) have unearthed a car stealing racket from the United Kingdom (UK), involving Range Rovers and BMW cars.
Last week, SVS officers, under the supervision of Snr Supt Glen Hackett and ASP Gary Edwards, seized two Range Rovers and a BMW in Valsayn and central Trinidad.
Police sources said that a particular car dealer from the Chaguanas area has sold more than a dozen vehicles believed to be stolen from the UK.
Officers said they went to Cascade River Gardens, Cascade, where they detained a 47-year-old female manager of a furniture store and seized a blue BMW, believed to be stolen from the UK.
Police later went to Dow Village, California, where they seized a white Range Rover from a 32-year-old female attorney.
They also went to Acono Road, Maracas, St Joseph, where they seized a second white Range Rover, which was not registered but had false licence plates on it.
The garage operator, police said, when questioned about the vehicle, reported that its owner had dropped it off for repairs.
Officers said they have received information that similar vehicles are being stolen from the UK and shipped to this country.
They have also identified certain officials at Customs and Excise Division and Licensing Division as being involved in the scam.
Even though two of the seized vehicles were legitimately registered in Trinidad, police said they were stolen from the UK.
The suspects, who were detained by police in connection with the seized vehicles, have been questioned and since released by officers pending further investigations.
Also involved in the exercises were Cpl Robert Joseph, and PCs Wayne Praimdass, Vernon Mohammed, Robbie Hall, Arnold Ramroop and Ricky Hallman of the SVS.
