Confirmed, it's all over CNN "A helicopter has crashed in New York's East River, leaving at least two people seriously injured, said New York Fire Department spokesman Jim Long."

FAA and the NTSB will tear into the operator's ass for operating an aircraft in proximity to a body of water without floatation devices 'floats' mounted to the aircraft.

It seems like the pilot lost his tail rotor.

Four survivors, one confirmed dead.

I'm not recalling seeing said floats on birds that head out to the east coast from piarco. But it has been a while

Every single helicopter that operates offshore has floats and individual PFDs for the crew and passengers. This has been so for years.

NHSL and SAUTT - Eurocopter BO105 CBS-4 - mounted to skids
NHSL and SAUTT - Sikorsky S-76A - mounted in forward and aft wheel wells
NHSL - Sikorsky S-76C++ - mounted externally in special enclosures (compartments) on the lower port/starboard sides of passenger cabin.
Bristow and Evergreen - Bell 212/412EP - mounted to skids.
Briko and SAUTT - Eurocopter AS355 F2 TwinStar - mounted to skids
TTAG - Agusta Westland AW139 - mounted externally in special enclosures (compartments) on the lower port/starboard fwd/aft sides of the passenger and crew cabins.

I hope this helps.

A woman visiting New York to celebrate her 40th birthday died trapped in the back seat of the helicopter that spun out of control and plunged into New York City's East River today.

The passengers were four members of a British family on holiday to celebrate Sonia Marra Nicholson's birthday.

The other three passengers were Nicholson's partner Helen Tamaski, her mother Harriet Nicholson and her stepfather Paul Nicholson, officials said.

Tamaski is in critical condition at Bellevue hospital. Harriet Nicholson is also at Bellevue and in stable condition. Paul Nicholson, 72, in stable condition at New York University Hospital.

Paul and Harriet Nicholson are British citizens who live in Portugal and Sonia Marra Nicholson and Helen Tamaski were living in Australia.

Three members of the family and the chopper pilot were almost immediately pulled ashore this afternoon while divers searched frantically for the final passenger. Rescue personnel immediately began performing heart compressions on one of the individuals initially pulled from the water and who appeared to be unconscious.

Sonia Marra Nicholson was recovered more than two hours after the crash at 5 p.m. and pronounced dead.

"I just hope it is the only fatality and our prayers are with those in the hospital," New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

The Bell 206 helicopter took off from a heliport at 34th Street. Joy Garnett told WABC TV that she saw the chopper lift off and almost immediately begin to spin around several times and then plunge into the river.

"He took off and spun," one official said. The pilot tried to turn it around and land, but he missed by 40 feet, officials said. The chopper landed in 50 feet of water and sank within minutes.

"Whoever was on hand, people that work here, were throwing things in to them, but the (helicopter) was upside down, its pontoons in the air," Garnett said. "We could only see two figures clutching onto the pontoons and it took about five minutes for it to sink."

Garnett said the onlookers on the dock called 911.

The pilot was identified as Paul Dudley. Dudley made a spectacular emergency landing in a Brooklyn park in 2006 when a Cessna 172 he was piloting had engine trouble. In that landing, no one was injured.

Dudley, who was rescued from the East River, is the manager at the Linden, N.J., airport. He flew his chopper to the helipad at East 34th Street to pick up his four passengers, officials said.

The chopper went down about 3:20 p.m. and within 10 minutes rescue divers were in the murky water searching for survivors, officials said.

Some of the officers who rushed to the scene were conducting a counter terror drill. When chopper went down the doffed their flack vests and dropped there automatic weapons as they raced to the river's edge.

Mayor Bloomberg praised the city's response to the crash. "A quicker response could not have happened and it wouldn't have made any difference," he said.

He said the chopper was inverted.

The mayor said flotation devices for passengers are optional in helicopters and that most don't carry them. "But if a helicopter lands upside down, they don't do any good," he said.

Ten boats from the New York police and fire departments as well as the Coast Guard and a helicopter were part of the search. Scuba teams were in the water. Some ferry service on the East River was suspended during the search.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were on the way to investigate the crash.

Helicopters that fly under 1,000 feet are not in contact air traffic controllers and don't file a flight plan.

They mentioned pontoons (which are different from the skids) in the news article and news report so they had floats, but helicopters are top heavy so a roll over is usually inevitable. Also, it depends on the point and angle of entry into the water.

not disputing it. i said i don't recall.
part of the suet to be eligible for that also mentioned the pilots will ALWAYS deliberately invert the bird if there's to be a water landing. so that, and the inverted then sunk frame had me uncertain.

I've been in helicopter avaition for over 20 years and I've never heard of pilots 'deliberately invert the bird if there's to be a water landing'. In the event of a water landing (ditching), every attempt is made to keep the aircraft upright.

In water survival/HUET training, you are taught 'in the event of a possible roll over and subsequent sinking'. to evacuate safely.

I don't know where you're getting your info from, but pilots don't 'deliberately invert the bird' on water landings.

...part of the suet...

Suet /ˈsuːɨt/ is raw beef or mutton fat, especially the hard fat found around the loins and kidneys.
Suet has a melting point of between 45° and 50°C (113° and 122°F) and congelation between 37° and 40°C. (98.6° and 104°F). Its high melting point makes it ideal for deep frying and pastry production.

Suet is made into tallow in a process called rendering, ...........

this part...???

WR,on most helicopters involved in commercial operations, the engines and gearbox are mounted high on the airframe. In the event of a water landing, if there's chop or partial deployment of floats, there's a good chance the aircraft will roll inverted due to the high centre of gravity.

Fast-acting NYPD, FDNY heroes save lives, but British tourist dies in East River helicopter crash
BY Rocco Parascandola, John Doyle and Corky Siemaszko
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS

Moments before a doomed chopper crashed into the East River on Tuesday, the pilot yelled to his passengers, "We're going down."

Suddenly, the helicopter plunged upside down into the chilly, fast-moving water, sparking a desperate rescue operation by city cops and firefighters that saved four people from the treacherous water.

Despite their heroic efforts, Sonia Marra Nicholson, a British woman in the city celebrating her 40th birthday, was trapped inside the helicopter and died. The crash left her mother and partner in critical condition. Her stepfather was treated and released.

Veteran pilot Paul Dudley escaped the 3:20 p.m. crash unharmed. "He's very distraught," a source said. "He says he just lost control and it crashed in the water."

PHOTOS FROM THE RESCUE SCENE

"I think that he's okay," Dudley's wife, SunHe Sherwood-Dudley told The Associated Press. "These are actually very dear friends of ours that were in the helicopter."

A source close to the investigation gave a harrowing account of what happened moments after the Bell 206 JetRanger crashed and immediately began taking on water.

Nicholson's stepdad, 71-year-old Paul Nicholson, was sitting beside Paul Dudley, the source said. Her mother, Harriet, and Sonia Nicholson's partner, Helen Tamaki, were sitting with her in the back.

HELICOPTER CRASH NOT A FIRST

"When it hit the water he unbuckled and tried to get to his wife in the back," the source said of Paul Nicholson. "He was pulled out of the water as he was trying to grab his wife."

Paul Nicholson was rescued by NYPD anti-terror and Emergency Service Unit cops who had been in the area. They immediately shed their gear and leaped into the water.

ESU Detective Keith Connelly said that when he reached the helicopter, he saw two men clinging to the skids of the chopper and two unconscious women "just bobbing in the water."

"The pilot was by the helicopter, screaming for help," Connelly said. "He was yelling, 'Someone is in the helicopter!' "

ESU Lt. Larry Serras said it was a long swim and the water was choppy and rough. By the time he got there, the privately owned helicopter had gone under - taking the birthday girl with it.

Serras said he focused on building a makeshift raft out of flotation devices - and making sure the heads of the unconscious women were above the water.

"We were all clumped together," Serras said. "They pulled us in very quickly. It was exhausting."

In the chaos, Dudley somehow drifted away from the officers and was suddenly caught by a swift current about 30 yards from the pier.

That's when Firefighter Robert Lopez of Ladder 7, who had also leaped into the water, came to his rescue. "He was in shock," said Lopez, 39. "He was saying there was someone in the helicopter still."

"Go get them!" Dudley screamed to Lopez.

By then, the chopper had sunk from sight in 50 feet of murky water. It took police about two hours to recover Nicholson's body and bring her to shore.

"It's a sad day," Mayor Bloomberg said. "We pride ourselves on being the most welcoming city in the world, and we are. And to have a family come here to see and experience the best of our city and end up in a tragic accident like this just breaks your heart."

Harriet Nicholson and Tamaki, 43, were in critical but stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. One was in cardiac arrest, and the other in respiratory arrest, sources said. Paul Nicholson was at his wife's bedside Tuesday night.

He and his wife are Brits who live in Portugal, and Bloomberg called British Prime Minister David Cameron to tell him about the crash, according to British press reports. Nicholson and Tamaki had been living in Australia.

Dudley, 56, was treated at the E. 34th St. Heliport for minor injuries, police said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched its own investigation into the fatal crash.

"Taking off and landing are two of the most difficult and challenging aspects of the flight, and with helicopters it's particularly challenging," former NTSB Managing Director Peter Goelz told the Daily News.

"They go up and down, go sideways and can hover. You've got to monitor an additional array of instruments and factors."

Authorities said the weather was clear at the time of the accident. The wind was blowing at about 15 mph.

Dudley was taking the four tourists on a private tour of the city when something went wrong, police said.

Witnesses said the Bell 206 JetRanger helicopter had gotten about 30 feet off the ground when it stopped climbing and started making a curlicue.

"He was trying to land and there was another helicopter on the pad," witness Carlos Acevedo said. "It seems like he was going down, and then he stopped and spun a couple of times. He went down under the water."

Another witness, Louis Reyes, said he saw "two guys holding on to the side."

"They were screaming, 'Help us! Help us!' " he said.

Then the chopper went under.

"In a minute it was completely gone," said Reyes. "The water just sucked it in."

Luckily, police were nearby, and within minutes they were able to locate the survivors and drag them to shore, where workers at the heliport had lowered ladders into the water.
