Pros:
Cons: Inadequate meat content, byproducts, low quality grain and meat products, fat of unidentifiable origin, artificial color, sugar

The primary ingredient in this food is corn. Corn is a difficult to digest grain of limited value in dog food, and which is also commonly associated with food allergies. Even if this had been a good quality grain, we would still note that grains are an unnatural foodstuff for canines, and that dog food products should be based on meat rather than grain.

The next ingredient in the food is poultry byproduct meal. This is a very low quality ingredient, not even identified by species and thus of unidentifiable source. "Poultry" could be any fowl and may also vary by source. Unidentified ingredients like this are usually cheap and of very low quality. We prefer not to see them used in dog foods. In this case, the ingredient is also byproducts, which is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

Animal fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine species, source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this asobtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".

Corn gluten meal, next on the ingredient list, is also low quality. This is defined as that part of the commercial shelled corn that remains after the extraction of the larger portion of the starch, gluten, and term by the processes employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup. In plain English, the remains of corn after most of the nutritious bits have been removed.

Meat and bone meal is an extremely low quality ingredient. It is the rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices. We would have greater confidence in this ingredient as fertilizer than as a dog food ingredient.

Brewers rice is a low quality grain and byproduct. Soybean meal boosts the protein content of the food, but Soy is a product we prefer not to see used in dog foods, especially this high on the ingredient list. Soy is a very common cause of food allergy problems, and although boosting the (otherwise minimal) protein content of this food, it is very low quality protein compared to that sourced from meat. Barley is a decent quality grain, but wheat, although a whole grain, is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dog food. Brewers rice is a further low quality grain and byproduct.

We note the presence of synthetic vitamin K - a substance alleged by some to be linked to liver problems and which is progressively being removed from better quality products. There is no excuse for adding artificial colorings or sugar to dog food products.

Ingredients:
Ground Yellow Corn, Beef & Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Digest of Chicken By-Products, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA), Poultry By-Product Meal, Brewer's Rice, Salt, Iron Oxide, Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin A Acetate, Manganese Sulfate, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Potassium Iodine, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid, Biotin.

Guaranteed Analysis:
Crude Protein (minimum) 21%
Moisture (maximum) 12%
Crude Fat (minimum) 8%
Crude Fiber (maximum) 5.5%
Linoleic Acid (minimum) 1%
Calcium (minimum) 1%
Phosphorus (minimum) 0.8%

This food receives a 1 star rating simply because there is nothing lower.

The primary ingredient in the food is corn (it should be meat!). Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. We prefer not to see this used in dog food.

Beef and bone meal is a low quality meat product. Soybean meal is a poor quality source of protein in dog food, and a common cause of allergy problems. Some believe that it is the number 1 cause of food allergies in dogs (outstripping even wheat).

The next ingredient is by-products. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. The AAFCO definition of chicken by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.” Digest is material from poultry by-products which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed tissue.

Animal fat is a further low quality ingredient and is impossible to determine the source. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as "obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".

This food uses chemical preservatives (BHA) which is believed to be carcinogenic, and is banned from use in human food.

The next ingredient if further by-products, this time poultry (unidentifiable source). The AAFCO definition of poultry by-product meal is “a meal consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice.”

Brewers rice is a waste product – a spent grain that is a by-product of the alcohol industry. The AAFCO definition is “the dried extracted residue of rice resulting from the manufacture of wort (liquid portion of malted grain) or beer and may contain pulverized dried spent hops in an amount not to exceed 3 percent.”

Their meals used to be rice and herring / mackerel / corn beef.....but their stool used to be kinda sappy and the stench was overbearing....

Been using Purina and everything is up to mark....they putting down some big logs now but at least it's easier to clean up.

Did you mean "recipe"? Or is something wrong with your dog?

Team Loco wrote: i mean eating chow everyday can be so disheartening

How you know dat? Doubles not dat expensive... rough times, huh?

One pardner used to buss' a hole in de chain-link fence... so his dogs used to go by de neighbour, and eat their dogs' food...

A nex' pardner livin' in de back of St. James where "night-crawlers" are listed as "indigenous and common" in tourist brochures, has 2 large Rotts... instead of feeding his dog, he just removed the razor-wire from the wall, and leaves a front window open that allows a clear view of his fancy stereo system inside... He just has to wake earlier than his neighbours to clear the yard of any debris and residue - like shoes and remnants of clothing - and to bury any remaining bits of piper in the back...
