Jack: Big trucks should only operate at night
By Innis Francis South Bureau
Story Created: Jun 15, 2011 at 10:43 PM ECT
Story Updated: Jun 15, 2011 at 10:43 PM ECT
Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner believes that heavy duty vehicles should only be allowed on the nation's highways during certain hours.
Warner said such vehicles should only be allowed to transport cargo between 6 p.m and 6 a.m, and there needed to be regulations to enforce it.
Warner was responding to the traffic chaos that followed a crash on the Solomon Hochoy Highway near Gasparillo at midday on Tuesday when a National petroleum tanker overturned and spilled gasoline on the highway.
Firefighters took the decision to block both north and south carriages of the highway, triggering a traffic jam that snaked the entire length of the highway and left thousands of people stranded.
Warner said the Fire Service handled the situation well.
He was speaking at a ceremony yesterday to officially opened the rehabilitated Glod Road, Moruga.
The function was attended by Member of Parliament for the area, Clifton De Coteau, Minister in the Ministry of Works and Transport Stacy Roopnarine, and Permanent Secretary in the Works and Transport Ministry Cheryl Blackman.
It cost $11 million and took four weeks to repave Glod Road. Warner said that in a week's time, roadworks would begin on the Tarouba Link Road, which connects the Solomon Hochoy Highway to the San Fernando By Pass.

That endeavour traffic plan is the BEST so far IMHO

Dem already crazy during the day. I fraid them in the night too with that same driving style. And worst yet now the many faulty lights would be evident.

You ever coming up the highway UBH,SHH, or CRH at say 120kmh and out in the distance, something just not looking right??? A phcuking missile!! A truck/vehicle with absolutely no lights at the back. Not even an ID light! Craziness.

Licensing needs to step up and just show up and do random checks :|

I voting Yes, with a review of its effectiveness after some time. We have to try something.

I heard it mentioned before that this is done in the larger countries, especially around city centers.

yep, i think this is a really good idea, not to say that tankers cant overturn in the night as well but the traffic will be less, plus traffic on a morning will decrease significantly.. seems good to me

Also something has to be done urgently to limit the speeds these truck driver "race" at. Cameras, individual fines as well as fines to the owner of the fleets. GPS tracking devices that detect vehicle speed, etc, etc. Trucks barrelling up the highway on the right lane at +120kmh ?? WTF

Switching lanes like an RX-7, EVO, 3 lanes at a time?? Craziness I does be seeing.

3 trucks line up abreast at the traffic light. "DRAGS!!" None could outdo the other, at least not by much. Who ever behind 'dais dem!'

if legislation is put in place to enforce this then we can expect the price of everything to go up because business owners will claim an increase in operating costs to only be able to transport goods at night. Businesses, hardwares, warehouses will have to stay open after 6pm and maybe all night for deliveries and stock taking and having to pay staff for overtime or higher after-hours salary.

There will be claims of security risks at night for transporting goods.
Plus I dont think operations such as the quarries can operate at night - increased light bills?

I like Jack's ideas, but this one is going to be near impossible.

Well its an idea being thrown out.....I am sure in exceptional cases like this the tankers would be allowed to operate....

Now he says during the night but how about stating that they should not be allowed during peak hours.....morning traffic etc

Trucks should be limited to the left lane only... as Duane said, it may be near impossible to do this now. More supervision on the hiways is what is needed in order to enforce the current 'keep left except when overtaking' law so that traffic will flow smoother with trucks involved.

this is a good idea, having it implemented though and getting drivers to comply is a totally different story.

And you hit the nail on the head.
How about me delivering concrete to you at 2am?
Prices will increase substantially because everything I use comes in on trucks...cement, aggregates.
My workers will never be home with their wife and kids at night(security). The neighbors of my customers won't be able to sleep with all the noise we'll create.

Food for thought...

Consider this 2004 article. Trucks can only enter major cities in India at night
http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstor ... wsid=89693

A nice 2007 article for consideration on restricting the driving hours of trucks:
http://roadsafety.wordpress.com/2007/11 ... th-trucks/

A 2007 article on the dangers of night-time truck driving:

When it have "gas shortage", "man" shouldn't rush to get gas unless he below quarter tank.
I does reach home, eat, bathe, take a sleep and go look for gas after midnight and 100% of the time, I'm back home with a full tank in under 20mins. Learn from this.

Exactly, how would villagers feel at 2am when I have trucks rumbling through their village with an aggregate plant running at over 100db's and 3 330bl excavators going at it in the quarry?
