how is the battery life on these superzoom cameras? I'm looking at getting myself one.. Currently I own an olympus basic point and shoot 12mp... The battery life is about less than two hours with basic photos.. but movie mode totally kills the battery.. any recommendations??

I second that, they started the superzoom trend
I owned an FZ-20 which was light years ahead of the competition at the time
the current ones are excellent and have good ISO performance

those of you who said Canon, does this apply to point and shoot cameras as well?

what's a good P&S camera for roughly 200USD?

Agreed, I was never really into cameras but got a Panasonic DMC-TZ10 last year and I am still impressed with it as it has a manual mode which took some time to figure out but worth the hait loss. The HD video recording is excellent, but you can hear the motor on the zoom if shooting in a quiet environment.

Unforntunately I now feel the need to upgrade to a DSLR due to 'shots I could have got if...'; and when I do finally get on it will more than likely be a Canon.

Depends:

DSLRs
High End - Canon, Nikon
Mid Level - Tie
Low Level - Nikon, Sony

Compact PS
High End - Canon, Panasonic
Mid Level - Nikon, Panasonic
Low Level - Canon, Nikon, Panasonic

M34 or Mirror lens Cameras
High End - Panasonic
Mid Level - Sony
Low Level - Olympus PEN (many prefer these to the Sony as well, arguably the best image quality of all the small "slrs").

Pic in avatar was taken with an Olympus PEN....in very low light.
I highly recommend this camera, it's amazing with the Panasonic 20mm lens.

Basically, Sony's PS cameras are a waste of time. Very average image quality and performance. Canon's are the best IMO. Panasonics have a few GEMs (LX line and T series).

Haven't used much Nikon PS, but they ones I have used are very good as well.

Sony's SLRs are pretty good. You won't go wrong buying one. But if you plan to get professional with photography, it's best to stick with Canon due to their excellent high end cameras and wide range of excellent lens.

Nikon is great as well, arguably they have better high end cameras, but Canon's lens are usually cheaper.

^^^ um, can some of you guys state what you have actually owned and used like smokey did so people can sift through your oppinions from what you read online?

I own:
SLR's
Nikon: D90, D40
Canon: EOS3, 10D. I rent the 7D on occasion.

P&S
Olympus 1030SW
Canon 1200SDIS
Sony P&S (Don't have this anymore, can't remember model)

I get great results with Fuji and kodak disposable cameras as well.

^^Nah bhai, I think he means that nikon has better low end SLR's.. and their entry level cameras are quite good, so I won't dispute that.

Many, would...but after using a Pentax K-x, Canon Ti1 and Nikon 3100....the Nikon far exceeds the others. It's a great little camera.

Between my dad, my gf and myself I've owned (the ones in b old) and used:

Canon Mark II
Nikon D90
Nikon D3100
Nikon D7000
Pentax K-x, K-7, K-5 + way too much legacy Pentax lens
Canon Ti1, Ti2
Sony A550
Pansonic GF-1
Olympus PEN EPL-1
(my personal everyday camera)
Sony NEX3

What you value in a camera, I may not. I base my recommendations on color, high ISO quality and performance.

No true photographer should have anything good to say about Sony PS cameras. They have horrible color and overly aggressive noise suppression.

And yes, I never said Nikon is low end. As crossdrilled correctly interpreted, I meant Nikon has some of the best low end (namely the wonderful D3100) models around.

But again, everything with photography is extremely subjective.

However, you'll always find universal praise for Canon and Nikon.

Amen, but people see the smothe (overly noise reduced and overly sharpened pics) and say "look how clear!!".

Clearly a lot of the P&S croud don't print large sizes to know what is a good picture and what is junk (for printing)

thats because a lot of those flat sliding p/s cameras basically using a cellphone lens
and pushing 12mp when they should just be doing 2mp
