Postby Scoobert Bauce » June 1st, 2011, 3:58 pm

I've been fixing computers privately for awhile now, but I never got around to actually getting certified... So anybody know anywhere offering it? cheap?

Almost each and every technical institute offers this school offers this, throw a stone and chances are you will find one. I did mine at Bordercom St. Augustine, cost about $4500.00. You can just write the exam without taking classes if you are confident in your knowledge.

Is that your highest goal in IT? Or is it a side thing and you have another (main) career.
Unless you're 14 and dropped out of school, I would suggest NOT doing A+.
If IT's your main thing. Look at something bigger, like MCITP.
A+ was prestigious a decade ago, but now it's no better than a Ytepp/yapa piece of paper.
Everyone and their grandmother can build pc's and fix hardware issues.
Look my cousin build his own last year, and he's in petroleum.
I hope that's your moonlighting gig.

I contemplating doing A+ also, just for the certification since I do my own builds and stuff too, also a little dollars on the side won't hurt since I have people always asking me to do stuff

For PC repairs A+ is a good starting point.

You can sign up @ the institutes listed above but you can acquire the text and study it yourself @ your own pace as the exams are open dated you just sign up at least 5 working days in advance from when you want to take the exam (@ least this is bodercom's procedure)

SBCS is also another prometric testing agent AFAIK

IMO studying by the book is better than those 3 week cram courses offered, i mean with a reputable school you should get good schooling on how to pass the exam but passing the exam isn't all if you really want to be proficient in what you do.

also some lecs in a school i would not mention suggested brain dumps, please don't use em cuz they don't teach you sh1t and you'd be a walking certificate with little knowledge...

btw my suggestion on a text would be sybex, i always find their authors writing style thorough yet simple. but that's just my choice

true but can everyone and their grand mother recover from system errors like NTLDR and NTDETECT missing or corrupt.....or C:/windows/system32/config missing or corrupt...???
or how to disable automatic reboot of the Pc when u get a blue screen error constantly...how to resolve video issues...

all they know is put hard drive on another computer copy off info and wipe and reload OS....and doin a piss poor job at it...cant even bypass windows genuine advantage properly...
they dont even know how to properly configure a BIOS or what the Hell is a SLIC table....
or even how to use msconfig, services, devmgmt and others....

so then if u basing your opinion on a simple thing like building a computer....then yea...anyone can do it...but to actually understand the concept of operation and how to do a proper repair.....hardly ppl does do that.....

as for the OP....boardercom....SBCS....CTTL.....i recommend CTTL....if you going to take classes...or if u just want to do the exam u can do it anywhere u want...go in...talk to them....make payments...choose your day......and go and do your exam

Just checked the schedule at CCTL to see what Cisco courses they have, the courses appear to be very short, any reviews from people who did courses there?

Actually the Major I'm studying is Network Administration, but yeah repairs is a side hustle (fees aint cheap, even with GATE lol).
I was thinking about getting my CCNA stuff first as that pertains more to what I'm doing, but yeah I think I'll try for MCITP.

There courses seem short, do they "teach" to pass exams or teach for students to learn?
