RECOMMENDED READING: Apple now sells more watches than the entire Swiss watch industry

Whether you like it or not, the Apple Watch is here to stay and has proven itself the most popular wristwatch in the world. A watch for all people, whether working class, a professional athlete, or celebrity … everyone has seemed to hop on the Apple bandwagon. But is that really any surprise? The reality is it is an extension of your phone, another screen to engage with. Apple has already gotten users so addicted to their products, they introduced a screen time feature to help owners manage the amount of time they engage with their devices. In regard to our community, it makes for a superb gateway watch that gets younger generations back to wearing timekeepers on their wrist. Back in February, website The Verge made it very clear how successful the product had become, noting that Apple now sells more watches than the entire Swiss watch industry as of 2019.

According to the report acquired by The Verge from Strategy Analytics,  Apple had shipped nearly 31 million units in 2019, which resulted in a 36 per cent increase on the previous year. Between the watches sold by Swiss brands and conglomerates, only an estimated 21.1 million watches were shipped to consumers, a decline of 13 per cent from the previous year.

So what does this really mean for the watch industry?

The players this really affects are those who sell watches priced competitively in line with Apple Watches. This means the brands that actually need the capital the most are, in fact, most at risk. Microbrands may win the hearts of mechanical watch enthusiasts looking for a value-driven gateway into the collecting community, but we are a niche hobby that is not representative of the larger economy. For luxury watches in the $3000 and above category, there is less to fear as most consumers do not buy an Apple Watch as an alternative to watches such as Rolex Submariners and Omega Speedmasters.

In fact, as Jean-Claude Biver pointed out in many interviews, the Apple Watch is not necessarily a threat but rather an asset to luxury watch brands who needed to get younger consumers back in the habit of wearing watches. As he says, it is, in the end, “a battle for the wrist”. If there’s something on it, the watch industry is winning.

While Swatch traditionally served that role, when the era of smartphones rose, people began to rely on watches less for having the time — as it was already displayed on their phones and was a more accurate timekeeper than the most accurate of quartz timepieces. Considering how often and how long we all engage with our screens, the watch had become redundant. This is why the rise of websites, such as our own, have become crucial avenues of connecting watches to consumers; we work to maintain the true emotional connection people have had with horology over the years and how it is a scientific art form worth preserving and participating in. Only time will tell if the Apple Watch damages the larger watch industry, but as of now, it is safe to say the Apple Watch is not going to take over auction house catalogues anytime soon.

The RM 65-01 Is Richard Mille's Most Complex Timepiece

This Automatic Split Seconds Chronograph costs $305,000 USD.

By Ambrose Leung · 4 Hrs ago in Fashion

After five years of development, Richard Mille has finally unveiled the RM 65-01 Automatic Split Seconds Chronograph. Said to be the most complex timepiece to ever leave the Richard Mille workshop, the team set out in making a technical watch that encompasses all the avant-garde specifics that the house is known for, but for everyday wear — a masterpiece you can enjoy each day.

Image

The high-frequency balance allows for superior timekeeping with stopwatch calculations to 1/10th of a second. It also has a split-second hand for intermediate times. Made with high-class material like Grade-5 titanium and Carbon TPT, the watch has gone through shock, drop, decade-aging simulation, waterproof, and even magnetic tests. One of the new exciting features of this watch is RM’s first in-house rapid-winding mechanism. This is a pusher that can be found at the 8 o’clock position where when pushed 125 times, the barrel is fully found with a 60-hour power reserve.

For a supremely legible dial, the RM 65-01 uses color-coding to match functions that correspond with the pushers. Yellow is for time: hours, minutes, small seconds at 6 o’clock, whereas green refers to the date display. Orange identifies the chronograph’s sweep seconds hand as well as the 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers. Red is linked to the winding mechanism, and the split-seconds hand is blue.

The RM 65-01 is made with over 600 parts and will cost you CHF 270,000 (approximately $305,000 USD).

Hublot Spent 3 Years Perfecting Its First Automatic Tourbillon. Now It’s in a New $169,000 Watch.

Hublot first developed a sapphire case in 2016 as a solution to the challenge of conceiving the perfect skeletonized. Sapphire was chosen as the ideal material because it created a clear, unobstructed window into the movement. Hublot developed its own metallurgy and materials laboratory, and created the Big Bang Unico Sapphire in a limited edition of 500 pieces in clear sapphire. Next came a succession of transparent crystal watches in different tints: red, blue, yellow, black and now orange. The color is jaw-dropping, and seems ideal for a ladies’ watch, yet Hublot isn’t likely to scale the piece to ladies’ proportions any time soon. “The size of this caliber is not arbitrary,” says Guadalupe. It was scaled for optimum function. The smaller and thinner you go, the more you run into stability issues.”

The complex case is a LEGO-like construct of approximately 50 components, with each piece machined to precise tolerances in order to fit together like a puzzle. They are held in place by six H-shaped titanium screws on the bezel. “It’s difficult to work with sapphire crystal because is extremely hard, yet fragile,” says Guadalupe, who says the pieces were milled by laser-like cutting in a process called electro-erosion. The sapphire is a synthetic corundum, the same material used to make the rubies that are used to reduce friction around moving parts in mechanical movements. The material has exactly the same properties as natural corundum except that it is made in a lab instead of by nature, and it is free of the kind of inclusions that appear in natural sapphire and ruby. It is the hardest mineral next to diamond.

The Caliber MHUB6035, a one-minute tourbillon, has 243 components, including a 22-karat grey-gold rotor. It was three years in the making, and has a 72-hour (three-day) power reserve. The numerals and hands are luminescent orange to match the sapphire, and the strap is orange rubber with a titanium deployant clasp.

I watch her videos, she clearly has access to high end stuff. Her collection is a bit much but I respect her for being a lady collector of watches, you don’t see that much.
