Part of me also wonders if Abu Bakr and his men were killed, if things would have been even worse for our country?

They had The idea that people would have tallied behind them to take over the country to set it straight.
But the people didn't support them and the effort. What did they do? They supported the military.....
No, they didn't do that even. They just pillaged and looted the unprotected businesses.

If we still feeling effects, is because the trinis are keeping it.

Fuad Abu Bakr: Trinbagonians should know other side of 1990 coup

Fuad Abu Bakr, son of Imam and Jamaat Al Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr, says there are other sides to the attempted coup on July 27, 1990.

Yesterday, on the 26th anniversary of the event, Bakr reposted to social media two documents which claimed to explain the reasons behind the insurrection.

Bakr captioned his post: "Every story has two sides. Please at least listen to both sides."

Speaking to LoopTT, Bakr says that the act was the result of socio-political pressures and a love of country.

“I think people who want to understand what exactly transpired from all angles should have access to it,” he said of his post.

The document, which bears the national coat-of-arms, is headlined ‘Causes of the Coup Simplified’, and says the coup was caused by actions of the Government led by the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR).

“There are two sides to every story and I think we should research everything before we speak about it.”

“A lot of Trinidadians, that’s what they do, they just take what is said to them, most times from one side, without thinking or doing any research...and that is not fair.”

The document lists Government’s decision to remove the Jamaat al Muslimeen from their Mucurapo Road location, and the “attack by corrupt members of the Government and security forces on the Jamaat to protect their interest in the Drug Trade resulting in the murder of WPC Bernadette James by Government officials”.

The document continued that the attempted coup on July 27, 1990 was a “pre-emptive strike, since the Jamaat was warned by sympathizers in Government that Mr Robinson had orchestrated a plan to assassinate the leadership of the Jamaat”.

The document added that the hostages were “corrupt politicians who were responsible for the state of the country and those who planned to kill the Jamaat leaders”.

The document ends the coup was a “revolution for the people born out of love for sweet T&T”.

Bakr, who was a child at the time of the event, said he has spent his life researching the coup, having read many accounts of it from various historical sources, and continues to believe that the act was done with good intentions.

“Things like this don’t happen just like that. They want to blame individuals and label people as ‘crazy’ or Islam or whatever and it’s really not like that, it doesn’t go that way, there’s always a story and a cause-and-effect.”

He says the population needs to be educated further.

“We have a culture of the ‘blame game’ and that is not fair, not only to the individuals that we blame but also to ourselves because when we don’t find out the real reasons and we’re not fair, we leave things to get worse and repeat themselves.”

Bakr said yesterday was a day of reflection which consisted of fasting and prayer.

“I feel that my father (and others) had ideals and they decided to stand up for their ideals and risk their lives. I’m not seeing any men (now) that would be willing to put their life on the line, and stand up for what they think is wrong.”

“I think revolution is sometimes, quoting Che Guevara, ‘born out of love’, love for society, love for what is right, when nothing else is working. It’s tough.”

Bakr also criticised authorities for quelling the recent protest led by television presenter Inshan Ishmael outside of the headquarters of the Guardian Media Limited, which was shut down due to a lack of the requisite permits from the Acting Commissioner of Police.

Yesterday, the nation continued to remember the July 27, 1990 attempted coup during which members of the Jamaat held then Prime Minister ANR Robinson and other government officials hostage at the Red House, as well as the headquarters of the Trinidad and Tobago Television company.

Robinson was shot in the knee after refusing to order the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force to stand down, instead telling them to "Attack with full force".

MP Leo des Vignes, shot during the storming of the Red House, bled to death before he could get medical help. Approximately two dozen people lost their lives during the insurrection.

On August 1, 1990, the insurgents surrendered.

lets not forget for the next couple decades
every week is a newspaper headline with some bandit/murder by an "ex muslimeen member"

lets not forget urp ghost gangs controlled by muslimeen
the many businesses that had to hire muslim security ie extortion

nor the rise of chaps like robocop, mark guerra et al
and of course the kidnapping spree

and the idiot politicians who courted them like dhanraj singh, joan yuille williams and others
how did abu bakr get to own 31 high value properties in a short space of time ?
and buy back some with cash when the govt was able to seize and auction them off

fuad abu bakr should spend time researching this instead

Bakr: Uprising could happen again

by Shane Superville Thursday, July 27 2017

ON THE 27th anniversary of the 1990 attempted coup today, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, leader of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen and the man behind that insurrection, believes a second uprising can happen if the country’s appointed leaders continue to ignore the will of the people .

Newsday spoke to Bakr at his Mucurapo compound on Tuesday .

He explained that the reason for his decision in carrying out the insurrection 27 years ago, was to address rampant corruption under the then National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) government .

He cited circumstances surrounding the death of WPC Bernadette James .

“You know what’s the genesis of this thing? The politicians were dealing drugs and they killed Bernadette James. That is the genesis and if something like this happens again. I don’t know...we may very well do the same thing because you can’t just kill women,” Bakr said. He added that the Jamaat al Muslimeen remains prepared to do what it takes to ensure the safety of women and children .

“We are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure women and children are protected. At least in 1990, women were not being slashed or stripped naked and raped .

“This is what is going on now and this is the very same moral abyss I spoke of in my address 27 years ago.” Bakr said the failure of governments, past and present, to properly address crime and criminality in the wake of the attempted coup was what led to an increase in violent crimes and more emboldened criminals .

“We’ve come to see it that by not making the appropriate changes, society has descended into the abyss and I don’t know how or when we’re going to return .

Every day we have murders and we are at a stage where people are slitting women’s throats .

“While it is in the best interest of the Prime Minister and the National Security Minister to solve the crime, they just don’t know how to do it. Prior to 1990, we controlled the streets and if you look at the murder rate then, it never exceeded one hundred in a year,” Bakr said .

Asked if the current economic situation in Trinidad is in any way similar to the economic downturn of 1989, which produced the attempted coup, Bakr said that the situation for many working class people has worsened. He criticised both the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader for their recent meeting which he said failed to address the plight of people living below the poverty line. “It’s 100% worst. That is the reality for a lot of the working class people in Trinidad today .

According to a recent report, 500,000 persons are now living with less than $1,000 .

That is less than minimum wage. When the government changed hands, the results of this study went from the Partnership to the People’s National Movement and they did absolutely nothing to alleviate this most important issue .

“Politicians are flirting in the face of the people by saying they are going to meet and they have an agenda that does not include the priorities.” Newsday also spoke to former 1990 attempted coup hostage Wendell Eversley who agreed with his former captor Bakr, that conditions in TT are ripe for a second uprising, simply because of the government’s failure to aggressively tackle organised crime .

“We have a situation where there are young men wanting to go to Syria to fight for ISIS .

Where is the intelligence gathering? Things like intelligence gathering are still largely absent from our National Security council,” Eversley said .

Well, if it does happen, we can't say that we were not warned!
One thing for sure, if the same group pulls this again, it will be far worse than the last time.

There is an article in Wired868 this week from a girl who grew up on the Jamat's compound. Good reading.
She basically described Abu as Jim Jones without the Kool Aid. Explains how he got the youths to join him in that debacle.

If it is true that just under half the population is living with $1,000 (I assume this means $1,000.00 per month) and we have a "powerful" 1%. It will not be hard to get youths to join.... maybe even easier now than then!

The economy is more in a stagnation, so things are not as bad as the late 1980s... as YET. If oil and gas prices drop again and we go to the IMF begging for help... round 2 for sure.
