Netbook + Win 7 + Outlook 2007 = pwned ?

Postby X2 » July 13th, 2010, 2:45 pm

I have a Gateway netbook running windows 7 starter and outlook 2007. I tried to use it for work but my IT guy says it won't connect to the server with windows starter 7. So i read up on it and Windows 7 premium says it gives the capability to do this.

In calling up the store for an upgrade package, they inform me that netbooks cannot upgrade past windows 7 home edition. This however was not what I was told by the *snicker* salesperson.

Can anyone confirm this ? I would prefer to use my netbook over having to buy a second laptop.

outlook can retrieve exchange emails, without having to logon to domain.

well that's your whole problem right there!

My ASUS 1201N came with Home Premium but people have upgraded their's to Ultimate with no problems.

only XP mode requires 1GB more ram and 15GB more HDD space but otherwise the minimum system requirements for all versions of Win 7 should be the same. The Server connection capabilities are nothing more than licensing, not hardware requirements.

you mean, if you're office doesn't utilize a domain (user accounts to control access.)

Had this same problem when a manager brought in the netbook to work with, windows 7 starter can't join a domain.....in any event our financial application isn't compatible with windows 7 so they just carried it back home.

And in troubleshooting to try to add a network printer i got a box that popped up saying that i will need to upgrade to windows 7 premium, this on the same netbook with starter.

But to me if it can run starter why can't it run premium

Or the IT guys coulda localized his account to a pst file, map the folder it's in as a drive on his puny-book, then give him one time access to the folder, remembering domain password. Then turn on access based enumeration for the folder so he won't go snooping around. 10 mins.

The one time is in explorer. Remember password and that SHOULD work. Will try it today.

Or just do what cinco said.

unless your netbook specifications are woefully inadequate
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

I think you may have misinterpreted the statement to mean that because you cannot upgrade, a clean install is impossible, there is no direct upgrade path from starter, should be no reason that you cannot install a different OS

250gb/2gb. gateway atom processor.

wagonrunner, will read up on those links, thank you... I was told they tried to have outlook download from the website like I have had setup before on other laptops, but apparently doesn't work on this unit ?

Correct... almost ALL netbooks I've seen come with starter only.

And in troubleshooting to try to add a network printer i got a box that popped up saying that i will need to upgrade to windows 7 premium, this on the same netbook with starter.

No problems running the network printer on this unit.

Hah hah hah... I doubt it will be my answer.

I use email constantly... I doubt the update speed would be adequate for me. outlook is always open

But damn... the netbook is pretty loaded despite the atom processor... I wouldn't call it puny :|

I was told by a few people that win 7 starter is ideal for the netbook design... running XP or other may slow it down... so I've heard....

I've enver benchamrked, but from what i've seen that's a pretty accurate statement unless you go Ubuntu Netbook
but it's not recommended for the average windows end-user.
Interface is simple enough, but it's the configs that will upset you.
