LARA ROBBED

By Nalinee Seelal and Indarjit Seuraj Thursday, February 4 2010

One million dollars cash and a quantity of VVIP tickets for the Beyonce ‘I Am’ concert were stolen during a heist at the home of West Indies batting legend Brian Lara, on Tuesday.

But police sources said Lara was distraught over the loss of several pieces of jewelry which he received during his record-breaking cricketing career.

Among the items stolen, was the honorary Order of Australia which was bestowed on Lara by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd during the hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Port-of-Spain on November 29, last year.

Lara could not be reached for comment yesterday. A call to his phone was answered by an unidentified man who said, “Mr Lara cannot come to the phone right now.â€

I wonder what the judge who said crime is overdone in the press, is going to say to Mr Lara, when they rub shoulders ?

Though it may be unfortunate that this happened to a national hero, one must wonder about a few things:

1. If he is in the habit of keeping a mil + valuables at home why does he not have a guard at the gate, or a good alarm system with some sort of monitoring whether it be armed response, or at the very least notification of any breaches, TSTT Vigilance or even one of the gsm home alarms for sale on 2nr.

2. Are there no surveillance cameras on the compound to record the minimum of 2 or 3 able bodied men with a vehicle who left with the safe. It's not as though you can put a safe in your pocket and scale the fence.

3. Were there any employees on the compound at the time and what did they see or not see?

4. Who knew what he had in the safe at the time? If a person likes to brag and show off large amounts of cash to any and everyone then its only a matter of time before an opportunist makes good of the information being broadcast. Unfortunately Mr. Lara has been known to do this in the past.

I call bull$hit on the whole thing and say it's a ploy by the promoters to gain even more publicity for the event and to act as a deterrent to the public to scare everyone from buying tickets from anywhere other than authorised outlets.

The thieves won't be so stupid.

They'll hawk it off to some unsuspecting clod who shows up on the day looking to buy from a scalper, who'll get held by the gate for receiving stolen goods and get their bumcie reamed in a holding cell...all night long.
