Are there updated figures, especially for pickups? Thinking of getting the new Ranger 2.2 XLT but really can't take on the GunPoint stick up business. I really like the Navara and Hilux but I know them hot.

Nissan vehicles remain favourites among car thieves and according to Sgt. Christopher Swamber of the T&T Police Service (TTPS) Stolen Vehicle Squad they “made up 52 per cent of all vehicles taken by robbery. Of the 322 vehicles reported stolen in 2019, 166 were Nissan vehicles.”

At yesterday’s police press briefing, Sgt. Swamber said the value of stolen vehicles amounted to more than $64 million. However, that was a $5 million reduction from 2018.

Also among the targeted vehicles was the Toyota Hilux. Although they are equipped with an array of anti-theft devices, including horn alarms, flashing lights and immobilizing technology, thieves were able to steal 15 of them.

Sgt Swamber said the highest number of car thefts was reported in the Northern Division with “28 per cent of 89 reports of the total recorded cases for this period with the majority of robberies taking place in the victims’ residence.” He said vehicle thefts in the Eastern Division dropped from 18 in 2018 to eight last year.

He added that based on information there appeared to be a trend in robberies where “victims appear to be robbed on their arrival at their home, or whilst at their home, with perpetrators entering through open doors.”

But it was not all doom and gloom for vehicle owners. Sgt Swamber said there was a 20 per cent increase in the recovery of vehicles last year and he is hopeful this spike in detection rates will deter car thieves and further reduce the losses incurred by vehicle owners.

“The TTPS would prefer there is no robbery and theft of vehicles. However, when these crimes occur, we hope the recent high detection in the Port-of-Spain Division will be a deterrent for offenders and nos crime perpetrated against citizens will be tolerated. It should be noted the illegal vehicle industry is a multi-million dollar industry,” he said.

TTPS Public Relations Officer ASP Wayne Mystar praised officers of the recently formed Road Policing Task Force (RPTF) for rescuing a kidnap victim.

He said: “At around 2.50 pm on Tuesday 7th January, officers of the RPTF were on duty in Cumuto when they had cause to assist a male victim who was the front seat passenger of a vehicle. After intercepting the vehicle, the victim told officers that around 2.10 pm he was at a gas station in Valencia when he was approached by two men.”

ASP Mystar said the suspects dealt the man several blows about the body before forcing him into the front passenger seat of the car then driving off with his vehicle against his will. The two suspects were arrested and taken to the Valencia Police Station.

Own a Toyota Aqua? Secure it

The new year has seen an increase in motor vehicle larceny in the central division with the Toyota Aqua and Nissan cars being the vehicles of choice.

While the division has recorded a 29 percent decrease in motor vehicle larceny for 2020 to 2021, there has been an uptick in 2022, an advisory from the Central Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated.

The thefts have taken place in Chaguanas, Couva, Freeport and Cunupia and have occurred in open residential areas and in unsecured premises between 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. The targeted vehicles have been the Toyota Aqua and the Nissan Tiida, AD Wagons, B13 and B14.

Citizens have been advised to be vigilant with their vehicles, especially at night, to raise an alarm on sighting suspicious vehicles or people and to install anti-theft and alarm devices including GPS tracking systems and automatic shutdowns in their vehicles

They have also been advised to call 999, 555, or to use the TTPS App or SOS feature for immediate help.

Aquas are plentiful on the roads and thus the parts availability can't keep up with the demand.
Always white and silver ones.

Parts real expensive for those Aguas. Projector lights is a easy 7 to 10k

A whole front cut aqua is about 30k

Not all Aquas have chip keys. The main grades it started off as having were L, S and G. The latter being the highest trim. There are countless L's and S's without chip keys. Our Aqua was the S version without chip so I installed a Viper 2 way pager system and included a club lock and a pedal lock (like that stopping anything lol)...anyway, I got rid of that junk 19mths ago.

Yeah I know the body parts issue which is just the higher number of vehicles creates a demand but when the guys here mention engine light I assume it’s other issues too but that’s weird for a Toyota

brake accumulator pump failure
water pump failure
wheel bearings
hybrid fan failure
battery pack failure

all extremely common in aqua, fielder/axio hybrid

I’ve been trying to figure out what is this brake accumulator pump , I assume it’s something only with hybrids ?the battery we all know and everything else seems like wear and tear

Ppl buy used wheel bearings? Unless the bearing can't be pressed out and it's an entire hub assembly which makes the part expensive.

Aqua production was from 2011-2021. As in any automobile introduced, you tend to get certain issues in the initial model years which in some instances, certain flaws, bugs and general issues get sorted out within 3 years etc. The model we had, had a production date of May 2013, so our Aqua at the time of production was only in the market for 1.5yrs. The headache for us was mainly the cells and the P510 which used to get hot and cause an over-rev with the engine.

Other owners complained about fan failure, bulbs, switches, regulators, bearings, linkages and bushings. The fuel economy was also unimpressive at around 650kms per tank (at least for me).
I also had an Xtrail Hybrid that gave me 800kms per tank but I called it quits on that vehicle too cause I was not able with the transmission being a ticking time bomb. The point with the Xtrail is that it used a bigger engine and was a significantly heavier vehicle with more obvious aerodynamic drag, yet more fuel efficient than our Aqua.

Anyway, what is happening now is that there are hundreds if not thousands of Aquas whose batteries have multiple cell failures in the 2011-2014 category. This also includes the Axio and Fielder which uses the same internals as its basically an Aqua wagon and not a true Corolla (they all share the Yaris aka B platform).

So right now demand for batteries and cells amongst other components are really high due to the volume on the roads. Watch out, Vezel owners are already facing parts supply issues.

Some owners have resorted to importing refurbished batteries from Miami. The cost to import and install is approx. $20k. For many, it doesn't make economical sense to pump that kinda coin into a significantly depreciated asset. Might as well parts it out as you might get more from the car that way as opposed to selling it as a whole with a non functioning battery/hybrid system.

*edit*

Observe the amount of used Aquas, Fielders and Axios on trinicars, pin and fb for sale. Plenty people jumped into the hybrid wave and some bailing out before it too late. An aging depreciating car with a battery that has a certain shelf life. Just now battery packs will be worth more than people car. I don't expect much change in the stolen vehicle stats anytime soon.
