It’s a bit of both.
I use the pure direct mode on my receiver to listen to 2 channel audio streaming on Apple Music.
Change it back to dolby surround/atmos once available for movies.
I’m not fortunate enough to have a dedicated listening room so I have to make do with this rig.
Planning some changes soon, will be sure to share it when completed.

Personally I have two dedicated but independent systems in the same room. One for HT and the other just pure hi-fi.
