Did my visa renewal via mail in December 2021 no hassel. Took about 3 weeks (12 working days) for the whole process

Wife also did the same with my daughter, but only she was successful. Daughter needed an interview so they returned her documents.
Daughters interview was Aug 10th and they were in and out in 15 min.
Received the DHL notification to collect her passport monday night which was impressive.

Just hope the collection is easy...
Collecting her passport was less than 5 min after DHL opened.

Too late for us. With school in Sep we have to shoot for Dec unless we do a childless trip

Yeah I want to go next year so I'm not really in a rush. Just want to start to book things from now.

When renewing a visa, do you need a US Embassy letter from your bank, showing average balance over the last 6 months?

Anyone tried renewing by just including your most recent bank statements instead? Apparently to get the Embassy letter from the bank you have to go in and line up to request it and then do the same a few days later to collect.

My wife didn't submit anything like that when renewing. Just the new passport. (Her old visa had expired a while ago so didn't send that back with it)

the bank statement is a "document showing proof of strong ties to your country." if you have other documents, they can look at that (you have to tell them to look at it if it is an in-person interview). when I got rejected, the embassy occifer said the bank statement I showed was a joint account so he didn't consider it "mine" or some dotishness. understand these visa occifers are not there to help you -- the onus is on you to convince them.

later on, i carried house and land docs and didn't have a problem. really you can carry anything once you can use it to convince the occifer you have an income, place to live, something to show you have a reason to come back to the island.

somebody else said they want to see regular deposits to your bank account-- which would show you have income from a regular/stable job. that seems ideal if you can get that.

Aren't those documents only really required for your first application? For a renewal once you've been in and out of the US a few times without overstaying, there's no real reason to deny the renewal.

iirc, there is no 'renewal' technically. by law, you have to provide proof of strong ties every time.

but what constitutes strong ties is up to the discretion of the occifer. you might get a handwave through or they might want to see proof, it's up to the occifer. best bet to have it and not need it.

by law they have to grant a visa for the longest applicable time or 10 years, whichever is shorter. if you get 10 years, your ties are long-term (property, consistent income, etc) and they likely still apply and it is basically a "renewal," but still walk with it anyway.

if u get less, figure out why your ties ran out before 10 years (eg, your employment was "student" and you finished your degree) and you may need to show them new stuff (eg, said degree and job acceptance letters, etc).

Hey Dizzy, let me know how long it took after you submitted it to DHL.

My wife got her passport with Visa two weeks after submitting the docs to DHL.

It was almost 4 months from doing the online application/payment etc and joining the online queue and waiting for the ok to drop passport at DHL.

With the current delay it makes no sense to apply for a transit visa as it's taking the same length of time as a tourist visa or longer to process. If you have an expired tourist visa just renew it, you will get through faster.

I saw on the website it says something like two or three days to get an appointment for the transit visa.

That's without the current delay. When you send your application for the transit visa and go on the site to choose your appointment date they will only give you the option of months from now and state the delay. Idk if it's changed but that was the situation as at mid August 2022.

I cant remember the exact appointment date options listed but it was 2023.

Update:
September 29 - Visa status on website changed to "APPROVED"

Next step should be notification from DHL that passport is being returned.

Only way to find out is to start now... renewals are taking around 3 months so I think new applications that need an interview will be much longer.
