it was on the news...

he came in to issue visas to the muslims going to saudia arabia for the hajj.

While he was at the Hyatt, police came to his room and said they were searching for arms and also searched him even though he showed them his diplomatic passport. He cut short his visit and left today.

They supposedly stripped search him and thing, imagine that

A firetruck diplomat staying in the Hyatt get that kinda treatment?

This will create some kinda anxiety between the Saudi government and trinidad, not to mention real stress for trini muslims who want to get visas to make hajj.

He already left Trinidad, disgusted from all reports.

This is very embarassing, and it also places stress now on muslims who want to get saudi visas.

Whoever was in charge of this exercise, would have some explaining to do...

nothing will become of it locally

no heads will roll and no one will have to answer

this needs to be taken up with the UN regarding treatment of diplomats

Was the Police and the relevant authorities informed on what he was doing ?.

Visas are not issued from a hotel room eh..

This should have been done at a office consulate..or the relevant ministry.

Did the visit co-ordinator inform the authorities ?

there are 2 sides to the story wait for the other side.

it's true that the Visas shouldn't have been issued in a hotel room, it should have at least be done at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or something... but the TTPS shouldn't have acted that way.

but we shall wait for the other side from the Minister of Foreign Affairs/CoP.

The guy came through customs and immigration with his diplomatic credentials so the relevant ministry did know about the purpose of his visit. I believe he was also met by a ministry of foreign affairs rep at the airport.

The Saudi govt doesnt have a consulate or office in trinidad hence the reason why they probably chose to do it from the hotel room.

There is probably some other side to the story - maybe some islamophobic white boy staying at the Hyatt realise what was going on and made some calls...

Like SR said, nothing will come of it... but it will embarrass us immensely especially with CHOGM a few weeks away.

He was stayinh in the Hyatt. It was not stated he was issuing visa from there.
Also according to the CNC report the relevant authorities were informed prior to his visit

Local Muslims demand apology

Saudi diplomat questioned by cops:

Aretha Welch
Wednesday, November 4th 2009

Saudi Arabian diplomat, Fawaz Abdul Rahman Alshubaili prematurely left the country yesterday after he was subjected to what has been termed an ’embarrassing ordeal’ at the hands of four local police officers.

Members of the local Muslim community are now demanding an apology from this country’s Commissioner of Police James Philbert on behalf of his officers, whom they say treated the man, who is a Saudi Arabian government official, in ’an appalling manner’.

Imtiaz Mohammed, chairman of the Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago organisation, last night told the Express Alshubaili was interrogated and forced to partially strip by the officers, one of whom he identified as Assistant Commissioner of Police Raymond Craig.

Contacted last night, Philbert said while Craig did admit to visiting the diplomat’s hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain on Monday evening, he said his officers did not say they searched Alshubaili.

He said, ’I spoke to Mr Craig, who said they went to investigate a claim of someone handing out visas at the Hyatt.’

’This is not normal, so we as the police have the right to investigate such a claim,’ Philbert said.

According to Mohammed, Alshubaili came into the country to process visas for local Muslims hoping to take the annual Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Philbert said upon investigation, they found this claim was true and his officers simply asked Alshubali some questions.

However, Mohammed said Alshubaili was disgraced and interrogated and the community would not take it lightly and will be writing to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other authorities.

’If the police wanted to know, they could have called authorities to find out, not make him undress and question him for so long.’

He said local Muslims are profoundly disturbed and would also be writing the heads of state of all the Muslim nations who will be attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference later this month, to ask them to boycott if they do not get an apology.

But Philbert said his officers conducted themselves in a proper manner and were well within their rights.

Question.

Mr. Imtiaz Mohammed what is the view of the local Muslim community with regard to the July 15th St. Augustine Accident that killed
Farmers Jameel Ali, 49, and his 24-year-old son, Qadir, the other party involved was 21-year-old Khalil Karamath.

Any views on that ??

shayhk Munaf who was on the committee that organized the visit said on the radio this morning that a letter was sent to the relevant ministry before the diplomat came. he also said they made him take of his shirt even after he presented his diplomat visa/passport etc.
