Turtle tourism gets a $29m boost

Industry rakes in $53m annually

Turtle Village Trust executive director Dr Allan Bachan says turtle watching has the potential to attract a larger international audience and surpass Carnival as a revenue earner. He was speaking at the launch of the turtle season 2013 at the Valencia Visitor Centre last week.

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Turtle Village Trust and long-serving corporate sponsor, Atlantic, after which Minister Ganga Singh said more than $29 million will be disbursed to various turtle conservation bodies over the next four years. “As developers, politicians and community leaders we should start to see marine turtles as a valuable asset, generating economic value and jobs,” Bachan said.

“If managed properly, turtle tourism has the potential to surpass Carnival in socio-economic value. The value of sea turtles at Grande Riviere can be seen by the investment in accommodations in this community.” He said the farming community, hotels and guest houses also benefited from turtle watching.

Bachan said the total average revenue for the season for guest houses, hotels, shops, food establishments, bars and agro-tourism was $53 million annually. He said the economic value of a sea turtle can be valued at approximately $26,000. Atlantic CEO Nigel Darlow said sea turtles had contributed to the growth and development of ecotourism in T&T. He said it was a fact that if there were no sea turtles, the local marine ecosystem would eventually collapse.

Darlow said this disaster was averted due to the community, stakeholders and companies like Atlantic. He said the turtle population, especially leatherback turtles, was now stabilised because of their collective effort. Minister of Science and Technology and Member of Parliament for Toco/Sangre Grande DrRupert Griffith said an estimated 10,000 leatherback turtles now nested in Trinidad compared to 500 in 1987, placing the population as the largest in the western hemisphere and perhaps the world.

He said this has resulted in the north-eastern district of Trinidad attracting a large number of visitors both local and foreign annually to witness the nesting spectacle. Griffith said this interest has translated into increased socio-economic development for the region. Also present was Turtle Village Trust chairman Natasha Ashby.

...brings into question what or how much does Carnival rake in? Up to now no one can quantify the value/benefit.

November 26, 2014: At 6:00 pm, on Tuesday November 20, 2014 residents of Nelson Road, Freeport and its environs braved the inclement weather to witness the commissioning of the lights of the Commonwealth Recreation Ground by the Honourable Nizam Baksh, Minister of Public Utilities. This is the 157th recreation ground that has been officially commissioned with lights since 2010.

On hand to witness the significant event were Dr. Glenn Ramadharsingh, Member of Parliament for Caroni East, Mr. Kelvin Ramsook, General Manager, T&TEC and his executive management team, and Mr. Anil Balliram, Councillor for the area of Freeport/Chickland.

He has already commissioned six of these grounds in the Constituency of Caroni Central. The Public Lighting Programme is managed by the Ministry of Public Utilities and facilitates the illumination of recreation grounds across the country.

This is the same WASA that digs up recently paved roads and does a piss poor job of reinstating the trenches? As a current example, go check the Eastern Main Road up by Cleaver Woods in Arima and see the quality of the restorative work.

Who is suffering because of WASA? The road user. Good job WASA! Good job!

Anyway, someone is profiting from this poor coordination between Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and WASA. . .the paving contractors. Elections coming up, black gold going to be spread in abundance even more now.

Wasa poor communication pave and dig was the norm before 2010. It happened for yearssss. Even if it is, it isn't as prevalent as before. Defending ur party is one thing but lying and misleading ppl with misinformation is another!!! But then again if the leader doing it what do u expect from the sheep dat follow?!!!

I maybe out of touch here but I fail to see how firing a minister is a bad thing, to me that shows how this party is serious about the job and isn't afraid of firing non performers. I know it isn't equally applied and it can never be given the realities and dynamics of politics but the net effect is positive.

Caribbean Airlines records US$60 million in losses for 2014

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Thursday February 5, 2015, CMC – The state-owned Caribbean Airlines (CAL) has recorded losses estimated at US$60 million last year, Finance Minister Larry Howai has said.

Howai, speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, said that the accounts for fiscal year ending December 31, 2014 were still being compiled but that the losses took into account the US$38 million grant provided by the government during 2014 which was recorded as equity.

But Howai told legislators that the unaudited accounts showed a loss of US$60 million and that the airline had developed a strategy plan which envisaged it breaking even by 2017.

Howai said the transformation of CAL would take three to four years following a consistent company strategy to achieve identified objectives with major milestones targeted during this period. He said this strategy plan was recently developed and completed towards the end of last year.

Howai dismissed reports that there had been an injection of more than one billion dollars (One TT dollar=US$0.16 cents) into the airline last year.

Last July, CAL announced that it was projecting a loss of just under TT$100million for its financial year 2013.

Howai said then that the airline has been enduring a difficult period but may now be emerging from it.

According to its financial statements for 2012, the airline, which a few years ago merged its operations with the cash-strapped Air Jamaica, registered losses that moved from US$43.6 million in 2011 to US$83.7 million in 2012.
