BAYERN AND NUREMBERG SET FOR BAVARIAN SHOWDOWN

FC Bayern Munich new boy Mario Götze is expected to make his Bundesliga debut for the Bavarian giants against local rivals Nürnberg this week
Previous
Next
Munich - The 59th Bundesliga edition of the Bavarian derby between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Nürnberg promises to be a rousing contest as the two rivals prepare to face off against one another in the Allianz Arena on Saturday (kick-off 15.30 CET).Die Münchener haven’t lost a home fixture to their local rivals since 1992, but Nürnberg have a coach in Michael Wiesinger who knows what it takes to win this derby. In his pre-match press conference, the 40-year-old, who played for both clubs, referred to a game against the Reds in the 1993/94 season, when his Nürnberg team upset the odds and “dominated Bayern for 90 minutes” to win. “Sometimes the weaker side comes out on top,” he said.
Perfect start

And not many would doubt that his team are the weaker of the two. Bayern come into the game after a perfect start, with two wins from their opening two games. They have now gone 27 Bundesliga games unbeaten, setting a new club record in the process and seemed to rectify the tactical errors on show on week one against 3-1 success against Borussia Mönchengladbach after the clinical 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 2.

They can also hope to finally see Mario Götze in action. The 21-year-old was an unused substitute in Frankfurt but is set to retain his place in the squad this weekend, while there could also be a place for Javi Martinez, who boosted an already formidable midfield by returning to training this week. Arjen Robben, for one, shared the team’s positivity ahead of the derby. “We’re certainly heading in the right direction.” One man whose participation is in doubt is Franck Ribery. The Frenchman is recovering from an ankle knock but Bayern may want him involved in any case, as he has helped his team to win their last 17 games when on the pitch, a record only equalled by Roy Makaay.
Comeback kings

Nürnberg’s strength lies in their resilience, a quality that has been especially evident since Wiesinger took charge. They have fought back twice to claim a point in their opening two games, against 1899 Hoffenheim on the opening day and then at home to Hertha Berlin last week, the latter courtesy of a sublime Hiroshi Kiyotake free-kick. Moreover, they have lost just five of 19 games under the stewardship of the present coach.

Wiesinger is himself boosted by the news that “Per Nilsson is fit again and Markus Feulner got through training” meaning the Franconians have a full squad to choose from, discounting midfielder Timo Gebhart (adductor). The Burghausen-native built up the derby atmosphere, highlighting the game as “important for the whole region” and despite conceding that last season’s Champions were favourites, hopes his side can players can rise to the occasion. “It will be a difficult game but it’s something really special.”
"Special significance"

FC Bayern captain Philipp Lahm told bundesliga.com this week that the match certainly held “special significance for me as a Bavarian” and expected a “good atmosphere”. He also added that Nürnberg would be “more motivated and better-organised defensively”, but said that Pep Guardiola was well aware of the potential threat.

His team-mate Thomas Müller described Saturday’s opposition as “always uncomfortable” but reminded everyone that there were “few problems in the Allianz last year [when Bayern won 4-0], so let’s hope it’s the same this time round”. This season’s derby could well be a much closer affair.

Possible line-ups

Bayern: Neuer - Lahm, van Buyten, Dante, Alaba - Schweinsteiger - Robben, T. Müller, Thiago, Ribery - Mandzukic

Nürnberg: R. Schäfer - Feulner, Nilsson, Pogatetz, Pinola - Staek, Balitsch - Kiyotake, Mak, Drmic - Ginczek

this one passed under the radar. all the best gustavo!!!

WOLFSBURG SIGNS BRAZILIAN GUSTAVO FROM BAYERN MUNICH
WOLFSBURG, Germany -- Wolfsburg signed Brazil midfielder Luiz Gustavo from Bundesliga rival Bayern Munich on Friday.
Image
The 26-year-old Luiz Gustavo signed a deal through to 2018, the Volkswagen-backed club announced.

"There is no question that he makes us better," Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking said. "We want to move back toward Europe with Wolfsburg, and for this we need players like Luiz Gustavo."

Both clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. German media reported that Wolfsburg was paying between 15 and 20 million euros ($20 and $27 million) for the Brazilian.

"I have professional and personal reasons to want to go away," Luiz Gustavo said before Brazil's 1-0 defeat in Switzerland on Wednesday. The player faced a struggle for regular playing time at Bayern, which has further reinforced its star-studded midfield under new coach Pep Guardiola.

He reportedly was also a target for clubs in England, Italy and Russia.

"Wolfsburg wanted me from the beginning. That's one of the reasons I'm here," Luiz Gustavo said at his presentation.

"I am very happy to have made this decision and to be here now. It's like a new life for me and I'll give everything for Wolfsburg," the Brazilian said. "I'm really looking forward to the challenge. Wolfsburg is a top club with a great concept and I'm also happy to be able to stay in Germany. I feel very comfortable here."

Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga title in 2009 but has since struggled to recreate that form. Last season, it finished 11th in the 18-team top division.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge thanked Luiz Gustavo for his two and a half years at the club.

"He won many friends in our club with his calm, always friendly and very professional manner. You could always rely on Luiz Gustavo and he played his part in Bayern's treble last season," Rummenigge said.

Luiz Gustavo joined Hoffenheim from Clube de Regatas Brasil in 2007, and Bayern paid 17 million euros ($23 million) for the Brazilian in January 2011. He scored six goals and set up three more in 64 league games for the side.

Luiz Gustavo joins up with compatriots Diego and Naldo at Wolfsburg, and could make his debut against Schalke on Saturday.

"I can imagine that he'll be in the starting line-up. He's in the squad in any case," Hecking said.

Luiz Gustavo has played 11 games for Brazil.

Nah man rfari, I was aware of the transfer of Gustavo to Wolfsburg.
Arsene Wenger was supposedly showing interest as well but apparently he didn't realise he had to spend money to get him.

Kickoff 1230

Bayern eye Freiburg ahead of Chelsea
26 August 2013, 09:09

European champions Bayern Munich travel to Freiburg on Tuesday, determined to pick up their fourth straight Bundesliga win before heading to Prague to face Chelsea for the European Super Cup.

Bayern were dealt a blow on Sunday with the news star-signing Thiago Alcantara is expected to miss the next seven weeks after tearing ligaments in his right ankle and is due to undergo surgery on Monday.

The 22-year-old, who cost Bayern €25 million from Barcelona last month, was the only negative news from Saturday's 2-0 league win over Nuremberg when Pep Guardiola's side set a new Bundesliga record with 81 percent ball possession.

A Franck Ribery header in the 69th-minute broke the deadlock before Dutch winger Arjen Robben cut in from the right to add the second as Bayern claimed a club record 28th game without defeat.

Now Champions League winners Bayern head to Prague's Eden Arena to face Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, the Europa League holders, on Friday and Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said the Bavarians need another win at Freiburg to keep confidence high.

"We want the best possible start with 12 points from four matches, so we can go to Prague for the Super Cup with no weight on our shoulders," said Rummenigge.

Thiago's injury will force a rethink to Guiardiola's midfield line-up, with Thomas Mueller or Toni Kroos likely to partner Mario Goetze in the middle, flanked by Ribery and Robben.

Freiburg, who have qualified for this season's Europa League, picked up their only point of the season so far when they drew 3-3 at Hoffenheim on Saturday in a frantic match which saw two players sent off, while the visitors' coach Christian Streich was also banished to the stands.

Having battered the Nuremberg goal with 26 shots on target and 10 corners, Bayern travel to Freiburg eager to keep the winning habit.

"The important thing for us right now is to take the points and keep clean sheets," said defensive midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was not the only Bayern player to admit the team are still coming to grips with Guardiola's new 4-1-4-1 system.

"We certainly could have scored a goal or two much earlier against Nuremberg.

"And sometimes we need a little more patience, especially against opponents who are defending well. We know we can play better, but it'll come."

Freiburg will do well to contain Bayern, who won 2-0 at the Solar Stadium last season, while no Freiburg fans will need reminding of the Bavarians' 7-0 romp in Munich in 2011, when Ribery scored twice.

If Streich was hoping for any insider tips from Nuremberg then he won't have been relieved by coach Michael Wiesinger's assessment: "In footballing terms, Bayern are quite simply a machine."

Basics. No doubt here

Ribery shortlisted for European Player of the Year Award with Messi and Ronaldo
by Cristian Nyari
Tweet

Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery has been shortlisted by UEFA for its Best Player in Europe award for the 2012/13 season. He is joined by Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and previous winner Lionel Messi in the running for the prestigious award. The award will be handed out on August 29 in Monaco following vote by a panel of journalists representing each of Europe’s biggest publications.

In 2011, UEFA president Michel Platini in a combined effort with European Sports Media created the award, replacing the old European Club Footballer of the Year award and in the spirit of the old European Footballer of the Year award, to crown European football’s best performer each season. Players are judged by their performances not only in Europe with their clubs but also domestically and for the national team and then ranked and voted on by a panel of journalists from all UEFA member countries.

This will be the third season UEFA hands out its new award with Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta being the previous winners. Only one Bundesliga player has previously won this award, that being Stefan Effenberg back in 2001 when Bayern Munich last lifted the Champions League trophy. This is also the first time a Bayern Munich player has made the shortlist or top ten in the voting since the award was revamped.

The rest of the votes went as follows:

4. Arjen Robben (NED) – FC Bayern München (57 points)
5. Robert Lewandowski (POL) – Borussia Dortmund (39)
6. Thomas Müller (GER) – FC Bayern München (38)
7. Bastian Schweinsteiger (GER) – FC Bayern München (32)
8. Gareth Bale (WAL) – Tottenham Hotspur FC (24)
9. Zlatan Ibrahimović (SWE) – Paris Saint-Germain FC (14)
10. Robin van Persie (NED) – Manchester United FC (10)

Ribery, Ronaldo and Messi all came of fantastic individual seasons with Ribery leading the race in terms of trophies following Bayern’s incredible treble-winning campaign but both Ronaldo and Messi broke several individual records in their campaigns. The French winger had arguably his best season with the Bavarian clubs and has even admitted to being deserving of winning such an accolade. Ribery was at the heart of a Bayern side that set 30 records in the Bundesliga and carried them to their fifth overall European Cup. The Frenchman was involved in 40 goals in all competitions for his club.

Ribery faces stiff competition in Messi and Ronaldo. Messi and Barcelona wrestled back the La Liga crown from Real Madrid this past season in record-breaking fashion, scoring an incredible 64 goals in all competitions along the way. Ronaldo meanwhile, while not winning any silverware, was the top scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals in 12 games and 59 in all competitions.

The winner will be announced on August 29 in Monaco following a live vote.

Thanks fellas.
Could have gone either way and tbh im not too particularly thrilled with this victory. For the life of me i can understand why pep will change a winning, killing machine for his own little experiments as trivial as this cup was. Why on earth he insists on playing lahm in the mids i dunno but hopefully it was the last of that. Rafihna just not able playing in his position and unless we buy a proper right back he needs to bench and lahm has to play his original role. Wtf :-? Neuer , that mc. He got beaten thru and thru like an intercol n00b for the second goal. i aint look for him dey at all.
Pep needs to put an end to the experiments. Pre season is over. stick to the jupp formula and be cool. We don't want ur brand of barca foqery or whaeva tuh f*q using in bayern. Take that sheit back to barcelona cus like they really need something.

I dunno why i feel so unsatisfied with this win but say what. Name pon trophy and medals done share out so we go take it
