There are amps called integrated amplifiers which consist of a preamp and an amplifier in one, so you can switch between multiple input sources as needed. Amplifiers on the other hand would have only one input.

all modern receivers AFAIK have HDMI inputs and they output the audio to the speaker outputs.
HDMI passthrough is a bit of a "feature" on some models, even though it seems to be a standard feature on them now.

HDMI 1.4 offers "audio return", which will allow for your receiver to get audio from your TV via the HDMI cable as well as send audio to the TV via HDMI. HDMI 1.3 didnt have audio return and so it couldnt get audio from your TV.
Though the proper way to connect is to use your TV and a monitor and use no audio from it, however some newer TV's have features such as Google TV, youtube and Netflix built into the TV and so you would want to get 5.1 audio from that - this is where the audio return channel comes in handy.

I was about to buy one then i realise it's just a pass-through for the video...which is fail

wuh?
You mean you want something with a repeater?
The onkyo does that :drinking:

Edit: Duane isn't passthrough outdated now?

Don't really need audio return

My budget limited and i was looking at the Sony STR-DG520...yes it's 1.3...has hdmi i/o...but no audio processing which sucks...but it has optical...guess i gonna have to use that :|

my Pioneer VSX23-TXH has HDMI 1.3 too but I bought it over a year ago when 1.4 hadn't been released yet

I dont have a 3D TV and have no need for an audio return channel so it works perfectly for me

it's all up to what you need

Optical is digital, however it doesn't have the bandwidth to handle HD audio, so if you want to get the full DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD high definition audio from those bluray discs on your PS3, you will need to connect via HDMI - optical/SPDIF audio wont cut it.

Which is why I suggest that your receiver also supports HD audio.

Not really, it still has its uses, someone may want to send a/v directly to the TV or some other variable

Pioneer.

Building the center would be very cost effective. I would not try to design my own crossover. Rather, take a design that is proven and replicate it.

You can put the monitor on the center channel.

I'm not one to go building speakers when you can buy proven products with lots of R&D that look great.

I woulda go with MTMs for the L+R too

check this
http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81631

you can make 3 and use it as an LCR and this design also use the Dayton mid-woofer anyway

AFAIK Yes you can place it high and point it towards you, however be mindful of reflections from the floor. In an ideal situation you should mount it so that the tweeter of the speaker is at the same level as your ears when you are seated to to watch the movie.

for movie watching, the center channel is the single most important speaker - don't chinks on it

Yuh wnat a simlar set like that? The surround just have a woofer though, no tweeter. used it for a couple years with movies and it was pretty good.

$100.

The centre has two 4" woofers and a "nanofine" sony tweeter, surrounds have just the woofer. They taking up space.
