The issuance of FULs are governed by the Firearms Act which says nothing of the PM controlling who gets approved. So I was responding to pugboy who keeps claiming Rowley said he changed the policy despite the fact there is no evidence of this.

As residents of Ben Lomond, Williamsville beat empty buckets and water bottles in a raucous morning protest yesterday demanding water, Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales questioned what protesting would achieve. He said it was well known that T&T is facing a 36 million gallon deficit of water caused by the harsh dry season. The protest began around 8 am along the Williamsville Main Road, where a $3 million pipeline replacement project is underway to improve the water supply.

Resident Joy Ramoutar said residents were fed up as the project was dragging on, leaving their homes shrouded in dust.

“We have been suffering in Williamsville for far too long. We were given empty promises by WASA, and even when we call to beg for water, we have not been getting any. They also messed up the road running pipes and never fixed it. We are not getting through to the WASA Call Centre. 

“This has been happening since 2022, and we are in 2024 now and have really come to the end of our patience,” Ramoutar said. She added, “It’s dust in the morning, dust in your pots, and no water, so enough is enough.” Another resident, Romero Abraham, said schools and businesses were affected by the lack of water.  

“Ninety per cent of the properties are businesses, and people cannot sustain their workers because there is no water,” he said.

Abraham noted that Ben Lomond falls within three constituencies: Naparima, Princes Town, and Tabaquite so they are not left without proper representation.

UNC councillor Vincent Ragoo, who represents Ben Lomond/Hardbargain/Williamsville, said in some places there has been no water for two years.

“We are not supposed to be begging for water in 2024. I am asking Minister Marvin Gonzales to look into this,” he added. But Minister Gonzales said WASA had already put all measures in place to treat communities impacted by the water crisis. WASA has ramped up call centre services and its water trucking. It has made known publicly the weather that we have been experiencing over the past three months,” he said. The harsh dry season and extreme heat resulted in a deficit of water. By protesting, what is it going to achieve? Will it allow WASA or the Minister of Public Utilities to make magic?

“While they protested, they had water in their taps. The pipeline replacement is a project under the Community Water Improvement Programme, which costs $3 million and is funded by the Ministry of Public Utilities.

In a statement, WASA acknowledged that it has experienced challenges recently maintaining a consistent pipe-borne water supply to customers in Ben Lomond, Ecclesville and Williamsville. Beetham sewer issues continue

MORE than three weeks since the residents of Beetham Gardens protested over sewer lines overflowing in the area, nothing has been done to fix the problem.

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has remained mum on the issue.

But vice president of the community council Shaquille McIntosh said on May 16 a WASA official and a possible contractor had come to look at the problem.

McIntosh said, “They’ll have to expedite the work because of its nature and the contractor would most likely get the job, as no other contractor came.”

When Newsday asked McIntosh if Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales and MP Fitzgerald Hinds had visited, he said, “No minister and no MP came.”

President of the community council Joel Lee said, “Well, it seems now that they’re showing a little more interest.

“They said to give them two weeks again to organise and for them to come back to speak with the council.”

Lee hopes a definite start date will be given, because the issue has gone on for far too long.

“At this point we’re just hoping they show us some love and let’s get this off the ground.

“I understand it’s a very technical job, but we just want to know when they’re looking to start.”

With the rainy season beginning in June, villagers who live near the canal that separates Phase One and Two will be on heightened alert.

The canal is currently filled with a mixture of debris and sewage, and overflows into nearby residents' homes.

While the sewer issue has been ongoing, according to residents, for the last five years, in late April on 24th Street, raw sewage was flowing into dozens of homes.

The residents staged a protest on May 2 asking the relevant authorities to deal with the issue.

At the protest, Andrew Joseph said, “I’ve been a resident since 1974. I’ve seen everything, from the building of the Priority Bus Route to now seeing this issue get progressively worse.

“This never used to happen in Phase Four. Now it seems like the back-up of sewage is spreading. Things looking real messy right now.

“We are asking those in authority, WASA – the main problem, we need you all to solve it.”

FELIX JOSEPH, 79, brother of the Prime Minister, has died.

Dr Rowley announced his death on May 23 during his opening remarks at the conversations with the Prime Minister at the Scarborough Library, Tobago.
He said he was also in Tobago to participate in the Prime Minister’s charity golf tournament at the Magdalena Grand Beach

“I also came to see my very sick brother, who passed away this evening (May 23). So there are a lot of things happening,” he told the audience, which included several Cabinet ministers as well as PNM Tobago Council political leader Ancil Dennis.

The Opposition UNC complained in Parliament yesterday when Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley was not present to reply to Opposition questions which were scheduled for reply in the monthly segment of Prime Minister's Questions.

"It's unacceptable - this is a mockery of (the Parliament's) Standing Orders!" UNC Whip David Lee deemed the situation.

Yesterday was the second sitting for the month - the time normally scheduled for a prime minister to answer questions from the Opposition. Eight questions were listed for Rowley to answer.

These included the completion of the Strategic Services Agency (SSA) audit and its intelligence gathering capability, queries on the Police Service Commission's contract extension of CoP Erla Harewood-Christopher, including the criteria used to inform Cabinet's extension decision; evaluation of the impact of crime on Tobago tourism and queries on the start of the Reliance Group-funded cricket academy and jobs arising from Rowley's Ghana trip.

Rowley wasn't seen in the Parliament and when the time for replies came, Leader of Government Business Camille Robinson-Regis asked for the questions to be deferred.

"The Prime Minister is not here today," she added.

Lee questioned if it would be deferred to another sitting or later in yesterday's sitting.

Robinson-Regis said it would not have been later in yesterday's sitting, "as the Prime Minister will not be here today".

Lee asked if Prime Minister's questions would be done at the next upcoming sitting.

Robinson-Regis replied," Yes, it will be to another sitting when we have Prime Minister's Questions."

But Lee said, "It cannot be for the next month! Is it to the next sitting that we'll have Prime Minister's questions, as this is unacceptable, Madame Speaker. We could do Prime Minister's questions ...we could have done it virtually - we've done it before. It's unacceptable."

Robinson-Regis said when Prime Minister's Questions were done virtually before, it was because of the Prime Minister's illness at the time and he had had permission to appear virtually.

She added, "Not to go into too much detail, but the Prime Minister has had a death in his family and he will not be at today's sitting and consequently (Prime Minister's questions) will be deferred to the next sitting when we have Prime Minister's questions."

"In addition to that, my friend (Lee) asked if it would be to the end of the month, (but) next Friday is a holiday, it would obviously be next month, which would be the second Friday, I assume, or the second sitting. But it will be when the Prime Minister is next available when there is Prime Minister's Questions."

However Lee, with UNC MPs desk-thumping their support, said, "Standing Order 24 ... this is a mockery of our Standing Orders and it's unacceptable and we'll not stand for that here! He should have applied for the day (off)!"
