Process server on church incident:
Al-Rawi was abusive

Court process server Mark Adams, right, relates to the media the events that happened while carrying out his duties over the weekend. Looking on are attorney Wayne Sturge, centre, and Darryl Heeralal. PHOTO: JEFF MAYERS

Process server Mark Adams says he was abused by Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi and given the same circumstances as obtained in attempts to serve election petition on Al-Rawi and others he will do the same way again.

Adams said so during a news conference called by attorney and Opposition Senator Wayne Sturge at his office on Richmond Street last evening to clarify claims by Al-Rawi that the document was served to Al-Rawi during the funeral service for former PNM government minister Errol Mahabir at St Paul’s Anglican Church, San Fernando, last Friday.

He said Al-Rawi was abusive to him when he attempted to present the document outside the church after the funeral service.

“So when I was outside with him he stopped every single person coming out of the funeral and it became the Al-Rawi show. I am standing here and he continues to belittle me and say how despicable he thinks I am.

And I am a stupid lil boy and how dotish he finds I am and how disappointed he is in me as a human being and he even made comments to the effect that he doubted whether I was human at all,” Adams told reporters.

“So he was abusing (me), making me a public spectacle, ridiculing me consistently. I stood there, I took the insults, I took the abuse,” he added.

Adams said after walking away he was followed by a security officer.

He said he told the officer he had to serve the document but he was told by the officer “not here.”

Adams said he subsequently “laid the document at his (AG’s) feet.” He said he “did not mean disrespect to the Attorney General.”

He said the document “was not thrown, it was laid at his feet. I actually bowed and laid the document at his feet.”

He also said two other ministers were verbally abusive to him.

Contacted for comment by CNC3 last evening, Al-Rawi said Adams’ claims were “entirely untrue.”

Admitting he heard the news conference live, Al-Rawi said: “None of these events (claims) are true.”

He said Adams “did engage in service in the middle of a funeral service and that is entirely inappropriate.”

Al-Rawi said he did not think anyone in the country would believe he “will berate a human being in the manner that this human being suggests I did.”

He said the development was “an extension of a desperate attempt by the UNC to make some sense out of their political venture (as) this election petition is destined to be a severe failure on the part of those who seek to prosecute it.”

Sturge said two attempts were unsuccessfully made to serve Al-Rawi at the church but “the service was effected outside the church close to the roadway.”

Sturge said more than one attempt to have the petition served on Al-Rawi and five other Government MPs were rejected by the respective MPs.

The petitions following the mounting of a legal challenge to the results in the six constituencies — San Fernando West, La Horquetta/Talparo, Toco/Sangre Grande, St Joseph, Tunapuna and Moruga/ Tableland — arising out of the legal challenge to the September 7 general election results in six constituencies.

He said letters were sent to both the PNM general secretary Ashton Ford and attorney Michael Quamina seeking assistance in arrangements to present the document to the respective MP.

“They did not agree to accept service in the dignified manner
and in the circumstances the process server was hired to effect service,” Sturge said, adding that “thereafter the cat-and-mouse game ensued.”

He said he didnt even mention it was the court papers but that he had some document for Al Rawi and he went off on him.

Strange that Al Rawi would say that nobody would believe he told the server those things.....to a simple yes or no question.

Listening to 90.5 FM here and the most hardcore UNC supporters like Tony Maraj and Sadro Mohammed is agreeing 100% with what the PNM is doing and agrees that the UNC is currently not a viable option.

They are agreeing with the PNM putting their people in state boards and getting rid of UNC people.

I can't find a single person IRL who agrees with the UNC right now.

A plea for Ezekiel
US$150,000 needed for surgery to save boy's life

One month after six-year-old Ezekiel McIntyre, of Sea Lots, was diagnosed with four heart defects, which can only be corrected by surgeons abroad, his family has turned to the public for help with raising at least US$150,000 to get the procedure done.

Little Ezekiel, who was one of the children featured in the music video for 2013's “I See Lots” by soca superstar Machel Montano (featuring Morgan Heritage), needs surgery urgently, his mother Pearl James McIntyre told the Express yesterday.

While the family has applied to Government's Children's Life Fund for assistance, McIntyre said they were told that, with changes to the Government, accessing the Fund could take longer than normal.

McIntyre said her son was not born with any known heart defects but was diagnosed with a hole in the heart at age four.

Just over a month ago, he began exhibiting signs of deterioration, including bouts of exhaustion, shortness of breath and chest pains, that led the family to take him for further testing.

“He began clutching at his chest and turning blue,” McIntyre said.

“We were shocked when the doctors at Mt Hope hospital told us that he now had four heart defects that had to operated on. We were also told that there was no cardiologist in Trinidad who could perform that type of surgery.”

The family was told that the condition will deteriorate with time and that the surgery should be performed “as soon as possible”.

A hospital in Colombia, USA has been recommended, but is financially out of reach for the family.

“We are hoping to have a curry-que soon to raise some money and also we are looking at a barbecue at the end of the month. For that event we are hoping for funding from the public to furnish the items needed and are hoping to sell at least 300 tickets,” McIntyre said.

Ezekiel will remain at home and under medication until the operation, but his condition is worsening, his distraught mother said.

Anyone with interest in assisting the McIntyre family can contact members at 304-3338 or Ezekiel's mother Pearl James McIntyre at pearljames71@gmail.com.

The family has also obtained a certified account for the purpose of fund-raising at RBC, account number 100088176607671.

High praise for T&T from Commonwealth Secretary General
Published on Sep 29, 2015, 8:42 pm AST
By Leah Sorias

Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs Dennis Moses met with high-level officials at the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s support for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) initiatives.
Day three of the UN General Assembly on Saturday saw the minister meeting with Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Netherlands Bert Koenders, Aruba Prime Minister Mike Eman and Foreign Affairs Minister of Curacao Ben Whiteman.
According to a news release from the Ministry of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, the Commonwealth Secretary General praised Trinidad and Tobago for its organisation of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which took place in Port of Spain in 2009, and noted the organisation of that meeting could be used as a model in the preparatory phase leading up to CHOGM 2015.
“Acknowledging the role that Trinidad and Tobago plays in the multilateral fora as a SIDS, the Secretary General informed Minister Moses of his intention to create a ‘Centre of Excellence for SIDS’,” it added.
The release noted Moses’s discussions with Sweden’s Foreign Affairs Minister focused on exploring areas of mutual interest between this country and Sweden, including the need for a legally binding agreement on climate change in Paris, France, at the upcoming Conference of States Parties of the UNFCCC.
“On the occasion of the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, Minister Moses suggested the possibility of an annual political dialogue at the level of ministers of Foreign Affairs between Sweden and the Caribbean region to discuss areas for co-operation towards the implementation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs), in particular, transportation linkages, and oceans and the blue economy.”
The release said discussions with the ministers of the Netherlands, Aruba and Curacao centred on possible areas of bilateral co-operation with those countries, such as energy and Energy Sustainability, oil and gas exploration, animal husbandry, protection of biodiversity, peace and security of SIDS.

Education Minister Anthony Garcia said North Oropouche Government Primary School pupils will be relocated to Sangre Grande Civic Centre from Monday.
He also said repairs, including a new ceiling, flooring and furniture, will be attended to swiftly so 166 children can move into their school on November 23.
Garcia shared these decisions yesterday with a 60-member group of parents and children who had gathered at the school’s compound at Fishing Pond, Sangre Grande.
Before that, the minister had a lengthy meeting with a number of stakeholders, including Minister in the Ministry of Education Lovell Francis, Cumuto/Manzanilla MP Christine Newallo-Hosein, principal Basdeo Sooknanan and Chief Education Officer Harrilal Seecharan.
Seizing the opportunity, Garcia also apologised to the parents for the delay which was preventing the children from getting a proper education.
Addressing the gathering, Garcia said: “We have put our heads together, we have pledged to work together to ensure your children do not suffer. “I am sure you have bleeding hearts. When you watch your children out of school, you are wondering what is next. When we keep them out of school for an extended period we are denying those children the right to an education. Education is a basic right of a child. We do not want you to suffer any more delays. We have found it untenable to have your children remain out of school for so long. All children will be relocated to the Sangre Grande Civic Centre from Monday. I would like to apologise on behalf of the Ministry of Education for this situation which occurred since March 17.”

After visit by new Education Minister...
Five Rivers school to open on Oct 5

Staff and students of the Five Rivers Secondary School will officially move into their new premises on Monday.

This after officials of the Education Facilities Company Limited (EFCL) yesterday were ordered to ensure the building was ready for occupation by the 875 students and 53 staff members by October 5.

The directive was issued by Education Minister Anthony Garcia after an hour-long meeting at the school with the principal Nicole Riley; Minister in the Ministry of Education Lovell Francis; MP for Lopinot/Bon Air West and Minister of Social Development and Family Services Cherrie-Ann Crichlow-Cockburn; and president of the National Parent Teacher Association Zena Ramatali.

Addressing reporters in the school’s auditorium as he emerged from the meeting, Garcia said: “There are quite a few things that need to be done but we have been given the assurance by EFCL that everything will be done to ensure that the school can be opened.”

Describing the meeting as successful Garcia said teachers, parents and residents had voiced concerns about the school’s sewer system which was to be linked with the one that services the nearby community.

Claiming that was the major problem as the sewer system had been operating since the school was first opened in 1972, Garcia, who himself taught at the school for ten years from 1973 to 1983, said the Water and Sewerage System (WASA) had assured them of a plant upgrade.

“Unfortunately, at this point, although WASA was paid the $2 million that was necessary for the upgrade of the plant, nothing has been done so far,” the minister said.

Promising to liaise with his Cabinet colleague with responsibility for WASA, Garcia said: “As a temporary measure, it has been agreed that we are going to use the sewer system that has been in operation since 1972.”

Garcia also assured school officials that hanging electrical wires which had posed a safety hazard to the staff and students would also be dealt with, while the issue of insufficient furniture was deemed “an area of great concern.”

Elaborating about this, Garcia said: “EFCL told us that they are in a bind because their suppliers have not been paid… they are not delivering the furniture to the school.”

The ministry’s permanent secretary Sandra Jones has been tasked with sorting out that problem.

Unable to say exactly how much EFCL was owing their suppliers, Garcia explained: “EFCL is one of the special purposes companies that has been established to look after a specific interest and a specific interest that falls in the lap of EFCL is the maintenance of schools.

“My information tells me that EFCL had the money but I don’t know what has happened. We are hoping that things are done so that all these little problems that should not have been problems in the first place, will be eliminated,” Garcia added.

The minister estimated that there were between 15 and 20 schools that were still unopened although the new school term began on September 8.

NPTA head Zena Ramatali expressed her satisfaction with the meeting as she said they were pleased with the assurance by both the EFCL and the minister that they were tackling problems which were affecting the nation’s children.

The NPTA will meet with Garcia on Friday to discuss issues and recommend solutions to the problems affecting the smooth operations at schools across the country.

Honestly i dont see the need for an achievement thread. Govt's responsibility is to work. PP thought they had enough achievements to ensure a second term but ppl rejected based on their horrible style of governance, the mismanagement of the economy, inaction and allowance of corruption allegations and a horrible campaign.

Every govt has achievements. But ppl dont vote on that alone.
