One man is dead while another is nursing gunshot injuries following a robbery incident this morning.
Up to 10 am today, the deceased and the other man who was nursing gunshot injuries, have not been identified.
They were said to have been the assailants who attempted to rob a maxi this morning along the Priority Bus Route.
According to police reports, at about 12:30 am today, a maxi-taxi was proceeding east along the bus route when he picked up two persons near Maloney intersection.
However, shortly after boarding the vehicle, one of the men pulled out a firearm and announced a holdup, and proceeded to rob the other passengers in the vehicle.
Unbeknownst to the assailants, however, the driver of the maxi-taxi was an off-duty police officer.
The officer pulled out his licensed firearm and, fearful for the lives of his passengers and himself, shot at the two bandits when he had a clear line of fire. The officer, the report says, was mindful not to shoot in the direction of the passengers.
The two assailants were both shot several times and ran out the maxi.
The officer then drove away from the scene and notified the police.
A team of officers from the Northern Division, under the supervision of Snr Sup Daniel and Sup Sankar visited the scene.
When they arrived, they found two men lying on the pavement in a pool of blood.
One man, when examined, was unresponsive, and he succumbed to his injuries before the arrival of the emergency health services.
The other man was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he was treated.
Up to 10 am today he was said to be in a serious condition at the hospital.
