Local Old Rub a Dub ~ Vicks Vapor Rub

According to a doctor who has been doing studies on Vicks Vapor Rub contains ingredients that ”can be irritants, causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway.”

Research published in the peer-reviewed journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), found that it can interfere with the ability of infants and toddlers to breathe.

“The ingredients in Vicks can be irritants, causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway,” Dr. Rubin, the study’s lead author, said in a statement to the media.

“Infants and young children have airways that are much narrower than those of adults, so any increase in mucus or inflammation can narrow them more severely.”

Petrolatum, one of the ingredients in Vick’s, can cause cancer.

“Among the studies linking the petrolatum impurity PAHs [polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons] to breast cancer is a Colombia University study in which researchers found that the breast tissue of women with breast cancer was 2.6 times more likely to contain elevated levels of PAHs bound to DNA (called DNA adducts) than the breast tissue of women without breast cancer.

Serious questions need to be answered over the safety of petrolatum or petroleum jelly as it is more commonly known.”

Additionally, there is currently no scientific evidence to prove that Vicks helps with anything.

To protect your family from dangerous side effects, you can make this homemade chest rub.

It includes eucalyptus essential oil.

Eucalyptus contains several compounds with antispasmodic, anti-harmful organism, expectorant, and decongestant properties. One of the main compounds is called cineole.

Cineole is an expectorant, can ease a cough, and fight upper respiratory problems.

Homemade Chest Rub Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra virgin coconut oil
2 drops lemon essential oil
3 drops eucalyptus essential oil

Directions

Mix all ingredients together and rub into your chest and upper back

Local Plant ~ Stinging Nettle Medicinal Properties

This plant has sharp hairs that break easily and can irritate or sting when the plant is touched

The swollen base of each tiny, hollow hair contains a droplet of formic acid.

When the hair tip pierces the skin, the acid makes it into the skin causing anywhere from an annoying itch or burning that can last several minutes or a couple of days.

Rubbing the stings with stinging nettle root or jewelweed has been used to suppress the itch/burning sensation

Little did we know that the sting of this plant was protecting a delicious green vegetable, a healing herb

Nettles have traditionally been used to treat Allergies and Respiratory related illness, Reduce Inflammation, Cleanse the Blood, Relieve Pain, Stop Hair Loss, Lower Blood Pressure, Heal Wounds, Stimulate Digestion, Relieve Anemia, Balance Blood Sugar-Hormone Levels

Nettles make an excellent Spinach substitute and can also be added to Soups and Stews.

Nettle Beer is brewed from the young shoots.

Nettle Root is used for medicinal purposes including enlarged prostate and when there is difficulty in urination due to BPH.

Nettle Tea made from the root can help urinary ailments. Tea made from the leaves is rich in iron and can aid coagulation and the formation of hemoglobin.

Remember that until dried or cooked, stinging nettle leaves will have those stinging hairs – never eat them raw

They are a powerful plant that is great to have around the yard

Local Lopinot Site ~ Vandals attack

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/featured ... 25661.html

A barrel of diesel allegedly left by corporation workers at the Lopinot River Recreation site was on Sunday vandalised by local tourists, allowing fuel to pour into the waterway.

The incident at the weekend is just one of many that Lopinot residents have said is part of a “reign of terror” by citizens who visit the historic site and lime by the famous river.

“We are fed up and disappointed with our fellow citizens,” said Donna Mora, head of the Lopinot Village Council, Monday.

“This is yet another act of carelessness and vandalism by local tourists but is definitely one of the most destructive.

“We will have to see how best to clean up this mess left by our uncaring people and hope the damage is not too severe.”

Photographs posted Monday on the social media site Facebook, by user Anna Nipper, showed a barrel on its side and a thick trail of diesel reaching the river.

Mora said it was her understanding that the barrel was left at the site some time ago by workers for the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation and was intact up until being tampered with last Sunday.

Items such as these are often left on the scene by corporation employees, who have not been provided with proper bathroom facilities or quarters in which to rest and store their belongings and tools while working in the area.

“Local visitors to the river are very destructive,” Mora said.

“Last year, someone burned down three carat sheds at the site, which cost around $5,000 each to build. These have since been replaced with steel structures that are very ugly and do not fit into the natural environment here.”

In addition to persistent acts of vandalism, including excessive littering, Mora said the visitors are extremely noisy.

“We have people coming up here, opening their car doors and sounding off,” Mora complained.

“This can go on until all hours of the morning. The sound can really echo in the valley and disturb not only the residents but also the animals that inhabit the wooded areas. Lopinot has for some time been without a resident police presence, she said, since the police post was evacuated and the community told that the officers could no longer be spared, due to shortages within the service.

“We understand there are areas that have more activity and they need police attention but we need some type of security presence here,” Mora said.

“The community does not feel safe, particularly with the type of visitors we get.”

That feeling of unease is likely to increase for the Carnival season, she said, when visitors flock to the river to get away from the noise and jostle of Carnival in the towns, but instead wreak havoc in the quiet Lopinot settlement.

Lopinot Historical Complex - 1

Lopinot is located north of Arouca on the southern slopes of the northern mountain range.

Lopinot can be accessed by the Lopinot Road which runs north of the Eastern Main Road.

Its economy is driven by ecotourism as many visitors come to the area to explore the Lopinot Caves and the Lopinot Complex

It was founded in 1806 by Count Lopinot (Charles Joseph Comte Loppinot de la Fresilliere) who was granted 478 acres of land by the King of England.

Count Lopinot established a cocoa estate on the land and called it La Reconnaissance.

The name Lopinot has its origins in the French village of Belforde which is situated close to the border with Switzerland.

Count Lopinot died in 1819 and, in 2003, his tomb was still prominently visible in the Lopinot Village cemetery

Local Dish ~ Carnival Time is Pelau.

One of the most popular dishes around at Carnival time is Pelau.

Pelau or ‘Trini pelau’ is a one-pot dish consisting of rice, a combination of meats or chicken along with pigeon peas that are all cooked with fresh coconut milk and aromatics such as herbs, onions and hot pepper.

It is one of the go-to dishes whenever one thinks of liming A big pot of ‘lau’, as the Trinis would fondly call the dish, is like no other – it has its own unique taste and flavour.

Making a Trini pelau is an art, nevertheless, it is quite simple to prepare.

The most difficult part of the dish is the burning of the sugar but you can substitute that with browning or even some cassava cassareep.

The burnt sugar offers the dish its signature taste – this is what makes it singularly an exceptional Trini Pelau.
