Port of Spain: AT 10 a.m. today, the High Court will deliver its ruling in a constitutional motion claim brought by Trinidad-born gay rights activist Jason Jones against this country’s sodomy laws.

Scores of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, as well as members of various religious bodies, are expected to be present at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain for the eagerly anticipated judgment of Justice Devindra Rampersad.

Let’s hope good send sense prevails here.

I've heard about a savings clause in the Constitution that blocks challenges to old laws, is this true?

The LGBT community hardly ever mess with Muslims, they much rather to take their fight to the more passive Christians: wanting to get married in Churches, forcing Christian owned/operated bakeries to make wedding cakes for them...etc...etc...etc...

...would like to see more of them take on Imams to get married in Mosques or claim discrimination from Muslim owned/operated businesses...a little more than their cause might get "cut short"...:|

Imams need to talk about sending people to Syria to kill people first, before they want to talk about the breakdown of society

Could it be he's just referring to marriage and its attendant rights such as inheritance of property etc.?

Good result-> imagine if this were about interracial sex as it was 60-70 years ago plenty of us would not be here today ( in some us states its still illegal). And yes same gender couples do have children whether it be via adoption, surrogate or otherwise there is no harm in doing so.

And to answer sMASH question- yes but I not sure why unless you are religious , I together with my GF going on 12 years now and for us its nothing more than spending plenty money on a day that not many people even remember- we have a mortgage together, I bet that more legally binding.

The court declared the law unconstitutional but it's not struck down until final decisions are made in July.

1-thanx to the invention of those amazingly powerful ink marked pieces of paper known as a last will & testament, doh hadda be married to inherit/bequeath property or assets. or even close. or even able to stomach d beneficiary. anybody could leave anything for anybody at any time.

2-it still illegal to be a rectum ranger, regardless of what a judge declares as his ruling. Only when the law is repealed will it be legally unobjectionable.

3-dis descent into chaos eh nowhere near done yet.

At least he's being consistent. The law also said (paraphrasing here) "domestic terrorism is illegal" and that didn't stop him, didn't it?

What a night in Trinidad. Legally sore bottoms on one side and needless butthurt on the other.

...thought that Stuart and Faris would've been celebrating tonight but it looks like the PNM isn't all that progressive...well that and some of their lawyer pardner(s) probably have tuh eat ah food:

Government to appeal High Court ruling on buggery law

Attorney General Faris Al Rawi has given instructions to appeal the High Court ruling that the buggery law is unconstitutional.

Minister in the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Stuart Young, who presented at the post-Cabinet media briefing this afternoon made the announcement.

He said he did not want to comment further on the ruling since he had not seen it. He also declined to comment more on Constitutional Reform. The law, part of the Sexual Offences Act, has been on the books as part of the country’s colonial history.

In 1976, when the Republican Constitution was enacted as the law of the land, these older laws were saved because of the Savings Provision, or section six of the Constitution.

This means even though the judge had ruled it unconstitutional under section four, which enumerates the country’s protections of human rights, the law still technically remains official.
