so i have a couple of questions
1. which is better: to go to countries like Miami and shop or shop online(esp with regards to customs fees)
2. how long does it take to breakeven (so i would no how much months capital i should have)
3. Is there any formal classes i cud take with regards to "what types of clothing best suits which body types"
4. What other problems do you encounter or that i should be prepared for

your breakeven point does not depend on time

its that point when your sales revenue is equal to fixed costs plus variable costs

If you are self employed whether full time or part time, this is a little area for you to share your experiences among other self employed and progressive individuals.

I've found non-nationals or nationals that have spent extensive time outside are more likely to give contracts to or invest in start ups than locals who deal more on nepotism or links than ability

You can pick and choose your clients and there's a lot of flexibility in terms of your working hours.

Income isn't guaranteed though.

It's much less stressful...well, in my situation at least. 8-)

Wish I was self employed...

But, if any of you interested in hiring me part-time, would love to make some extra $$$, outside office hours though. Good with computers, but willing to do physical work as well.

Eurogirl, do you manufacture clothing or just resell clothes that you import ?

Also look into CAL shipping. They fly there daily and there rates are bound to be more affordable than a courier company like Fedex.

best feeling, working for yourself. Comes with its hardships, but its all about good relationships with your clients and suppliers...

...stayign on top of your game is also good. I do Print Brokerage, so i handle everthing from the initial client meeting to delivery. The client never meets the supplier and as a result the headaches are less for them, which they appreciate.

YOu always have to keep abreast with what the market is doing....for instance right now, evn though the market is down, majot players are stickin with the Big Angencies due to th comfort zone there. As a self operator, you have to understand and brign soemthing different to th table that the big companies cannot provide. Your profit margins have to be less....if the big companys charge 60% markup...dro pt 40% and gain a slight edge that way....yu cnat get big money "jusso"...it must be earned over time

Understand the market yu in and the "Seasons" involved. There's always a down season when yu work for yourself..understand that and adjust to your secondary money stream accordingly (always have a secondary income stream...)

Service is the main thing...if you go out of your way to do something for a client and its appreciated, then repeat business and loyalty ensues.

I love it..yes there are times of you wanting to be "salaried" for a 20K a month et al....but then there's this....toying this message in yuh draws while sipping on some hot cocoa and working......

*busses fart on patented Leaher chair....

There are challenges no doubt , but nothing beats the fact that my inputs , whether knowledge or skill delivers a service people are happy with and are willing to pay.

However I don't like when people get the lines crossed , with my true friends we can do business together , business associates yes , but sometimes other classes of people forget what business is see only their needs and conveniently forget payment

Being self employed ain't no bed of roses, if you're not prepared to work hard and smart, be prepared to face real tears. That said it can be quite rewarding

I'm in the entertainment business for almost 20 years, started as a teen. Started my own company with a couple friends about 6 years ago. Still in this peaky entertainment industry, it pays very well but you have to create a niche to survive outside of the seasonal issue. Looking to offer additional services outside of the region now, maybe then I won't have to deal with the problem of "industry friends" and my receivables :agrue:

I'm one of those scaredy cats who wanted to wait and see how forex worked out for others. It's a bit daunting to get into for me... but I know a few who do make $$$ from it now. Will checkout the classes some time.
