Ok, so all this talk of importing a vehicle got me excited and I went looking at some sites.

I registered for SBT so i can see the prices and do some maths. Happened sometime about 9 am this morning. Lo and behold I got a call at lunchtime from a guy with an Indian accent and foreign number saying he's from SBT and he's my account manager or something? Says he's supposed to assist in my enquiries etc and asks me to confirm my email. I refused to do it over the phone cuz I told him he should have it on record, i only signed up a few hours ago, so he reads it back to me and asks me to confirm. Since then, he's sent me a couple emails with some cars "I should be interested in", but all links go back to SBT's website and stock. Even the contact numbers match up.

Anyone ever have this experience? Seems kinda expensive if its legit since I only registered to see their prices.

I registered two days ago and didn't get any calls. Or emails. Thank God.

Well they are legit and for serious buyers. I personally know someone who bought a Suburu from SBT Japan and I am bringing in a Toyota Axio. Got all the original documents - Bill of Lading etc. confirmed with the local shipping agency when the vessel is expected to arrive etc.

Any "special" sites for STI's, Evo's etc? I keep seeing Tiida, Sylphy etc.

Those units are better sourced from auctions, safer and in most cases mileages are legit with proper detail and knowledge. Better price too.

We recently had to demand a refund from ICM due to a bait and switch issue. Never again we going to try their service . And just a heads up, there are now a couple known exporters trading under different smaller companies. Be careful...

Why would want to chop it in half?? Wouldn't that somehow affect the vehicle negatively?
Dunno. Just asking.

Chop in half means front cut back cut you still getting all the parts from the vehicle

Procedure for Importing a Vehicle

Postby scotty_buttons » July 7th, 2014, 7:25 am

Question guys. Anyone know how to apply to get a license to be able to import your own vehicles without limitations ? As in not limited to 1 vehicle every couple years.
And what are the requirements ?

Applications for Commercial licenses for trade are currently closed I think. Contact min if trade to verify. Other than that, it's just individual import licenses, one per individual every three years

I have heard today from a person at the TTMA building that they will use the import license previously issued. They have now extended the online application only to the end of the mth.

You can't. It's a 2006. Cannot be more than 6 years old to the month.

update! the fool behind the counter at ttma gave wrong information so after having abused the guy i spoke to a senior officer who indicated that once the licence was applied for and issued before the 30th June 2014 it can still be used. New applications applied for from the 1st July 2014 need to be done online and preferably through a licensed customs broker due to the amount of fraud people trying. So I collected my old import licence and waiting for the customers clear to be off loaded.

Ok, vehicle should be cleared sometime this week.

Now I know you are allowed ( or should be ) to drive the vehicle from the port to the licensing office without a D plate. Can you confirm this. What I heard is that the vehicle must be taken to Vemcott for tyre inspection first, when inspected they stamp some form to take to licensing office to get vehicle registered.

Now since usually, by the time u clear vehicle from port to reach Vemcott and finish the time may already be too late to go to licensing office. You are not allowed to drive the vehicle home so does this mean I have to hire a tow truck to take the vehicle home ?

The next day now I can take a chance ( leave very early and hopefully no police on the road ) to reach licensing office the next day ?

Then how does the ( day ) insurance works ? Will I have to take another day insurance for the vehicle to be registered again ?

Can someone explain this process from clearing from the port, to inspection of tyres, to licensing ( including the insurance issues )

Thanks
