TODAY, many across the world will pause to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks in the Unites States, on September 11, ten years ago.
The grief is shared globally because it was not only an American tragedy.
Of the almost 3,000 who died that day in New York and Pennsylvania, many were immigrants living the American dream.
Ironically, the US response to the terror attacks was to tighten its immigration policy, and entry requirements, robbing many potential migrants of sharing in that dream.
At least 14 of the people who died ten years ago today were born in Trinidad and Tobago.
They all worked at the two collapsed towers.
The US Embassy in Port of Spain, as it has done on every anniversary, will hold a memorial service at the All Saints Anglican Church on Marli Street in Port of Spain today.
At the site of the collapsed World Trade Center, some of the relatives of the Trinidadian nationals will attend the memorial service to be attended by President Barack Obama.

Obama: 9/11 brought the world together

Story Updated: Sep 10, 2011 at 11:39 PM ECT
US President Barack Obama recalled yesterday that victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks came from all around the world.
"On this 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we remember that 9/11 was not only an attack on the United States, it was an attack on the world and on the humanity and hopes that we share," Obama said in a statement from the White House in Washington, DC. "We remember that among the nearly 3,000 innocent people lost that day were hundreds of citizens from more than 90 nations. They were men and women, young and old, of many races and faiths. On this solemn anniversary we join with their families and nations in honouring their memory."
In the statement released by the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy in Port of Spain, Obama said: "We remember with gratitude how ten years ago the world came together as one. Around the globe, entire cities came to a standstill for moments of silence. People offered their prayers in churches, mosques, synagogues and other places of worship. And those of us in the United States will never forget how people in every corner of the world stood with us in solidarity in candlelight vigils and among the seas of flowers placed at our embassies.
"As an international community, we have shown that terrorists are no match for the strength and resilience of our citizens. I've made it clear that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. Rather, with allies and partners we are united against al Qaeda, which has attacked dozens of countries and killed tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children—the vast majority of them Muslims. This week, we remember all the victims of al Qaeda and the courage and resilience with which their families and fellow citizens have persevered, from the Middle East to Europe, from Africa to Asia," Obama said.

My best friend father, took his life a few years after 9/11 because of the mental stress he endured from that day.. He worked in the first tower and the coworker that saved his life, went back into the building to get her boyfriend but never made it out.. Not only that, but he described in his own words "ah saw people splattering like watermelon on the ground".. He was a very cool, intelligent old man.. He was a supervisor at GuySuCo sugar plant in Guyana, so he was very mechanically inclined. He would be there hanging out with us while working on cars in his backyard. RIP Dennis
A German oldman who I consider to be the grandfather I never had, lost his 24yo daughter on 9/11... She was a first responder (Paramedic) that got decapitated by falling debris as she exited her ambulance. His wife still cannot sleep with the nigh comes. His family is torn upside down because of this tragedy some 10yrs after. His then 8yo grandson Kevin, grew up without a mother. Yamel is one of the more recognized first responders. Then President Bush honored her with a medal etc and deemed her a hero...
More info on Yamel Merino - http://www.defrance.org/wtc/Yamel.htm
A Trinidadian girl who lived next to my aunt was also killed that day... For me the memories run deep because my mother was in a train that just rolled out from under the WTC when the second plane struck.. At the time my sister attended highschool in time square, so it was real panic with us because we thought time square was getting hit next. Thank god my father was able to get into timequare to get her and while stuck in traffic on the west side highway, my mom spotted him and begged the bus driver to let her out. The bus was shuttling people uptown and away from ground zero. Everywhere you look in NYC, you meet people that were affect by this day. It's very sad.
I'm a proud American and a proud Trinidadian.. I'm in the process of buying an enclosed car trailer and we're planning on airbrushing on a 9/11 memorial on the rear trailer door.
WE WILL NEVER FORGET
