Re: What the Best Split level AC Units...Carrier LG, Panason

My parents put in an 18,000btu Comfort Star split unit in their room for around 3 - 5months now and it's working great so far. EXTREMELY quite, even at night you can barely hear the compressor running. I was told that the Comfort Star shares parts with Miller, so that's another plus. They payed somewhere in the $4xxx range installed..

I have a 12,000btu Peak window unit in my room for about 10 years now and never got a single problem with it! Did all the servicing myself (basically washing out the evaporator / condenser and painting any rusting parts to ensure longer life). They are slightly noisy though, but bearable..

At work we use an 18,000btu Peak split unit and that unit is crazy noisy! But it runs 24/7 and only gets serviced when it breaks down..

For our living room, we have a 40,000btu Miller.. Had it for around 3-4years now with no issues. Never had it serviced either, only clean out the air filters when required.. The compressor is on the noisy side, but then again, it's a pretty huge unit.. Cools quite well even in extremely hot weather.

In my experience, I'd stay away from the Peak split units.. for cost effective, give Comfort Star a look..

Always wanted to try a Daikin though, maybe when my Peak window unit gives out, I try out the new inverter technology units..

Bumping an old thread.

Seeing a whole set of Acs available now. What is a good split unit to go with? I'm really liking the panasonic units.
Anyone with info on samsung or lg?

One thing I've learnt, look for the AC with the lowest current draw rating. I bought a York 18,000btu unit and that has a very low current draw of 7.8A (IIRC, I'll have to confirm that). The older 18,000btu Yorks had a 9.xA rating for the same cooling capacity. Some other (cheaper) brands had much higher current draw figures.

I forgot the brand Pricesmart carries, but those were pretty efficient as well. Another recommendation I would make is to make sure and buy a proper sized unit to match the room, better to buy on the larger side due to out crazy hot climate..

I am also currently in the market for one 18000btu and two 12000btu split units. My price range is 4-5K for the 18 and 3-4K for the 12 w/installation. I am looking for quiet, efficiency, durability and parts availability.

I am very much considering the Panasonic but I would like to know more about Pioneer and Comfee brands, considering costs. Do they cover the characteristics mentioned?

Also do they come with the new refrigerant gas? Or which brands do?

Comfee brand is super noisy, lots of crackles and pops.

The Pioneer is another generic brand, pretty much the same as Peakes, Miller, Comfort Star, CIAC etc.

The Panasonic is the best bet for home use. They have inverter models that are energy efficient and they are built for quietness. They also have some nice looking ones too. They are higher in price also...

Deciding on the Panasonic but the normal one most likely. Spoke to my electrician to do the wiring...I was asked to find out for the Panasonic:

1. What is the Amperage of the 12000btu and 18000btu for the breaker?
2. Where do the plugs fall for the A/Cs?.. so he will know which side to run the outlet.

crackles and pops are from the unit icing up when something is wrong with it. Have it serviced.

How is the availability if parts for the Panasonic?

Anyone stocks the Gree U Grace?
It has a low profile form factor

I currently have a peakes and its really noisey, can be heard from the front yard :| and its icing up really quick and drips water into the room even after a service. Works okish.

Also have a coldwave from the above powerseller, not the quietest AC I've heard but top3, no problems at all, only thing I regret with that unit was not going for the bigger 18000btu and over sizing the estimated 12000btu.

I'm looking at either the inverter series or a simple cold wave to replace the peakes.

Comfee unit is serviced regularly, crackles and pops are not from icing... when the compressor kicks in the evaporator gives a rough jolt that causes the case to rattle. The fan is super noisy and when it shuts down if on the timer it makes a load of noise to close the louver and stop the motor...

I install/replace approx 15-20 units a week at the facility that I manage...

Best Value for money - CIAC, Comfort star, Pioneer, Miller, Peake, coldwave (all the same unit basically uses the same parts)
Most quiet units - York, Carrier, lennox
Best unit for home use - Panasonic

Just started using the pioneer and gree... both seem to be the same unit with different branding. The low profile one in the link seems like a good home unit also...

You would need a 30 Amp double pole breaker (if its a 220V Unit) run the circuit with 4mm cable, ECC or Rhino

Not sure of the plug location but most units have them on the RHS when you face the Evaporator.

I have 2 Comfee units about 3 years now - only time they make noise is when they ice up and need servicing.

Otherwise I have to look at the unit to tell if its on.

I have a York and I admit that unit never has a single issue ever though it doesn't get worked like the Comfee which are on for 12 hours at a time

Anyone has experience with a Cool Star unit?
Saw an ad in the papers from a company called Comfort Cooling with some low prices for Cool Star units.

$2,645 for 12,000 btu
$3,600 for 18,000 btu

Recently installed a Comfee 12000 btu. Just like last month. Works better than expected and its super quiet. I wanted an 18000 btu at first because of the heat my room builds up after noon but the AC guys said the 12000 would handle it and it is.

Wanted to go with a big name like Panasonic or LG but I heard good enough things about the Comfee from a few ppl. And ofc, for $2900 installed, its a good deal.

Only problem I have is I does be freezing my stones off so I have to fiddle alot to get the perfect temps/fan speed/angle all the time

We still have 2 pioneer units here. Only thing I had to change in mine is the capacitor. It's pretty silent at night. We also have an innovair and that's horrible and noisy. I think it also has to do with where u mount the condenser and if it's braced well. That same innovair makes tons of noise I assume because of this. Is this true?

Also from what the ac guy told me (when I purchased) comfee, pioneer and peakes share the same parts?

When you hear the cracking noise that is ice building up. It needs a service.

Pioneer and Comfee come from the same factory. The old Comfee units were the same as Peakes not the new Comfee and Pioneer units.

With regards to quality Comfee, Coldwave and GREE are top of the list and friendly on the wallet.

Duane 3NE 2NR - Currently we carry Gree Cozy series and the inverter series.

Saving energy can be tough in a challenging climate, particularly during the hotter months. It’s a point not lost on more than half of the respondents to our recent survey, who worry about burdening the power grid with their air conditioner usage.

These 52% are so concerned about stressing the grid and causing a blackout that they limit their use of their air-conditioner to when they really need it.

These units are complete failures. Genesco never ever has any replacement parts so you are stucked with an AC that isn't working.

DO NOT BUY FROM GENESCO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
