Hello Friends,

As a worker at NFM, I will give you a small insight to what I would call "Highway Robbery"

The flour that most doubles vendors use (45kg) has been increased by $60.00. Do you know how many doubles can be produced from a 45kg of flour?

Let me tell you. 1,200 doubles, yes twelve hundred and some good doubles vendors can get 1,500.

So let's use 1,200. If your 45kg bag of flour has been increased by $60.00….Do the math.

OK OK, let me do it for you….Your doubles went up by 5 cents.

Still want to buy doubles for $4 and $5? …..Feel FREE !!!!!

Also recieved via email :

While i also find that $3 doubles is expensive, being a big fan of technical correctness, i am surprised that Richard Commissiong, Technical Analyst for NFM does not understand that flour price is only one ingredient in doubles pricing. The price variation of other ingredients like oil and channa etc were not included in the "analysis". The increased price of fuel and electricity also have direct impact on pricing.

Inflation in trinidad has gone up to 8-10 percent per year for a while now- what this means is that everything on average would have gone up in price by "DOUBLES" in about a decade. Whether the flour price stayed the same or even DROPPED by $60 would still not have made an impact on the doubles man's need to pay himself a livable salary which increases with cost of living.

Lastly, i am surprised that the gentleman does not understand the laws of supply and demand, which determine the profit margins on doubles. Also the price of competitive available fast food.

Lastly, why doesn't Mr. Commissiong walk into ANY expensive restaurant, or even steak house like TGIF, or a modest chinese food store or fast food outlet and complain about their food pricing as related to the cost of their raw materials? Because i guess they left out aesthetics in analyst school LOL LOL. After food is prepared it then becomes a subjective process of pricing due to considerations of taste, availiability etc etc etc
Is that guy qualified in economics? I hope this is not the kind of "analyst" that is part of the decision-making process in our country LOL

Poor analysis, that! Touche!

Okay.

Where are the complaints for the increases in the other ingredients that goes into making doubles? Why that person doesn't back up their arguments with facts?

Steups.

Fact is that doubles increased from $3 to $4 to now $5 within 2-3 months. And the ONLY substantive increase there has been is flour. The increase from $3 to $5 represents a 67% increase, while flour has gone up 39%.

There's not much maths to do there.

Good fcuking grief. Is it really that hard to just not by doubles if yuh doh like the price. Frig boy. One set ah stupid emails passing round bout doubles and KFC. nobody say yuh have to buy the blasted thing. Stop bitching and complaining, cause next two weeks yuh right back by the facking doubles man looking for 3 wit slight. Yuh find the price too high, keep yuh friggin money in yuh pocket.

I never yet see a vendor holding down anybody and force feeding them doubles then asking for money. You buying it of your own free will.

Complaining aint gonna get you sheit. They don't care.

^^^ Finally somebody who is seeing the bigger picture..

Just because making doubles is hard work it does not justify or warrant such increases. Everyone who owns a business has to work hard for their business to prosper, so to all those who believe its justified your argument is flawed.

A doubles man only faces the tax man once and thats in the grocery (VAT).

while every other businessman has to pay VAT + Corporation TAX + Duty + other taxes etc....

A bag of flour produces 1200 -1500 bara =750 doubles
750 x $4 = $3000/day

$3000/day x 6days\wk = 18000TT\week

so do the maths....the price increase is not justified

this thread is funny especially those of justifying overheads and as the latter posters have in my view identified these overheads, or shall we say investigate what you doubles vendor has as overheads?

While i got that email also and the analysis was done on only flour , even with the lack of total analysis, it still puts into view the ridiculous increases we have seen in this once most basic of our local food delights

are retailers/ vendors adding to inflation ?

you better do your calculations....

here is another attempt at bashing the Doubles Vendor. Got this in email. Notice the source and notice the convenient way the author did not factor in the other materials/ingredients ..... as one person stated: it seems $400 is perfectly acceptable to spend on a meal for two at various food franchises. And it seems as if its perfectly acceptable for the fry chicken outlets to reuse and then reuse their oil again but now the doubles vendors using cheap reused old oil
