As a worker at NFM, I will give you a small insight to what I would call "Highway Robbery"
The flour that most doubles vendors use (45kg) has been increased by $60.00. Do you know how many doubles can be produced from a 45kg of flour?
Let me tell you. 1,200 doubles, yes twelve hundred and some good doubles vendors can get 1,500.
So let's use 1,200. If your 45kg bag of flour has been increased by $60.00….Do the math.
OK OK, let me do it for you….Your doubles went up by 5 cents.
Still want to buy doubles for $4 and $5? …..Feel FREE !!!!!

A bag of flour produces 1200 -1500 bara =750 doubles
750 x $4 = $3000/day
$3000/day x 6days\wk = 18000TT\week
so do the maths....the price increase is not justified

While i also find that $3 doubles is expensive, being a big fan of technical correctness, i am surprised that Richard Commissiong, Technical Analyst for NFM does not understand that flour price is only one ingredient in doubles pricing. The price variation of other ingredients like oil and channa etc were not included in the "analysis". The increased price of fuel and electricity also have direct impact on pricing.
Inflation in trinidad has gone up to 8-10 percent per year for a while now- what this means is that everything on average would have gone up in price by "DOUBLES" in about a decade. Whether the flour price stayed the same or even DROPPED by $60 would still not have made an impact on the doubles man's need to pay himself a livable salary which increases with cost of living.
Lastly, i am surprised that the gentleman does not understand the laws of supply and demand, which determine the profit margins on doubles. Also the price of competitive available fast food.
Lastly, why doesn't Mr. Commissiong walk into ANY expensive restaurant, or even steak house like TGIF, or a modest chinese food store or fast food outlet and complain about their food pricing as related to the cost of their raw materials? Because i guess they left out aesthetics in analyst school LOL LOL. After food is prepared it then becomes a subjective process of pricing due to considerations of taste, availiability etc etc etc
Is that guy qualified in economics? I hope this is not the kind of "analyst" that is part of the decision-making process in our country LOL
Poor analysis, that! Touche!
