I thought this year's Carnival was unusual in the amount of road traffic fatalities but according to TTPS https://www.facebook.com/PoliceServiceTT/posts/3038259432859384, there were 25 compared to 24 last year! Is Carnival weekend usually such a deadly weekend?

Trinidad and Tobago Police Service
February 26th, 2020
MEDIA RELEASE

TTPS Stresses on Road Safety

There has been a four percent increase in road traffic fatalities for Carnival 2020 when compared to the same period last year.

This figure represents an increase of 24 to 25 respectively.

In addition to which, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has observed a trend in which young persons accounted for over 50 percent of road deaths during the 2020 Carnival season.

These avoidable, unfortunate traffic deaths occurred on roadways with a maximum of 50-65 kilometres per hour speed limits, speeds which if obeyed, would in almost all cases, not result in fatal injuries to drivers, vehicle occupants, pedestrians and property.

While the TTPS has maintained rampant efforts to curb errant driving practices through its Traffic and Highway Patrol Unit, DUI and Speed Task Teams and the Road Policing Task Force, it is incumbent upon all road users to be aware of and practice road safety and exercise greater caution.

The TTPS underscores the importance of obeying speed limits, wearing seatbelts, refraining from using handheld devices while driving and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, at all times, all of which can significantly aid in preventing these types of tragedies from occurring.

Traffic police officers maintain their active presence on the nation’s roadways to ensure compliance of the road safety regulations and will continue with road policing efforts to reverse the current trends.

The TTPS wishes to take this opportunity to extend sincerest condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones in the recent spate of fatal road traffic crashes and looks forward to greater compliance.

Quite frankly by not repairing the cable barrier and leaving a set of posts on the side of the highway creates a bigger hazard for drivers.

Nah.
If you build a wall on your property , and an errant driver run into it are you financially responsible for it?
should'nt they be liable?

nope
State should pay to install but why should taxpayers have to repair if some drunk tuntun or some nitwit who not paying attention decides to rip some cables?
Same for street lamps etc
