I need some help, I think I bought a lemon. I purchased a used Canon 430ex speedlite from Adorama, condition G ( heavily used with scratches and ding, but FULLY FUNCTIONAL). When I received the unit I inspected it and found the following:

1 - The wide panel was missing, and the flash kept reading 14mm, which is the wide angle when the wide panel is pulled out. I was able to look into the slot and gently push back the top strip remnants of the wide panel and this solved the problem. However, the automatic zoom does not work, only manual.
2 - The flash fires very very weak, almost like a pre-flash. I am using new batteries and when i test fire using the pilot light it recharges immediately, so the unit is not pulling any power at all. I test fired on ettl and full power in manual and it is the same weak output. I took some test shots and they came out very dark. I went through all the custom functions and everything is okay.

I am no expert but I think the flash tube may be bad?

I sent a long email to Adorama today but no reply as yet. I know it's a risk to buy used equipment, but I have bought used lens from Amazon with no problem. This is my first and probably my last purchase from Adorama.

If anyone thinks they know the problem I would be glad for the help. Otherwise I am stuck with a dud.

Tokina 11-16 f2.8 Buy it with your eyes closed
Or if u cant afford that u can get the tokina 12-24 f4. I had that lens. Never regretted it. Better than the nikon equivalent

Just a question, the settings within the camera are correct right? Meaning low shutter speed (below 200th/sec), wide open f-stop(for testing purposes)

Well seeing as you don't have anything wider than the 35mm I would go for the 17-50mm you gain more on the wide side that way .

^^not sure have you looked at replacing the entire thing as the bulbs also have a limited life so it may be worthwhile getting a new one.

Also a take duckling bump...
