The aperture on my Canon 55-250 is stuck down and it cant focus.... Can this be fixed or is it now an expensive paper weight?

Best you google the issue because I have no clue. You can always skype canon and they will try to assist. It won't cost you anything

guys for those of you with light meters, I have a couple of questions:
1) did you purchase locally or brought it down? If it's the latter, how much do we pay in duties on it?
2) in the event that something goes wrong with it, who services/ can check the calibration on these things?

I just use the one in camera, when in manual and you choose your settings, depress the shutter half way and the exposure adjustment section will show you how over or under exposed the photo is.

Consider mirror less systems like the Nikon 1, Sony nex etc. fantastic new technology if you ask me.

X2.. I own a mirrorless - nex f3 and a dslr- d7100. I can say you will not be disappointed with the Sony nex system.

I can safely say I use it more than my dslr even for some events

The convenience of a compact system for me trumps my SLR nowadays. Even my iPhone sees more action than my SLR.

I need some alternatives to the sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro (OS)* HSM | C. I don't need to pass 70mm, but like the versatility of this lens to replace the 18-55 kit lens of my Nikon d5200. It goes for less than 500 USD I think.

what are you talking about? Mirror less has some distinct advantages over DSLR's. So you won't shoot something with your cellphone?
