Re: Coronavirus - COVID-19 - 116 cases, 8 deaths, 108 discharged in T&T

The US has imposed travel restrictions on foreign nationals who have been to Brazil in the last 14 days.

The South American nation recently became the world's second major hotspot for coronavirus cases.

Brazil has recorded more than 360,000 cases, the country's health ministry announced on Sunday, while over 22,000 people have died with the virus.

A White House spokeswoman said the restrictions would help ensure new cases are not brought into the US.

"Today's action will help ensure foreign nationals who have been in Brazil do not become a source of additional infections in our country," White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement.

Non-Americans who have been in Brazil in the two weeks before they request entry to the US will be denied that entry. The restriction will not affect trade between the two countries.

The suspension is to take effect on 28 May at 23:59 EDT (03:59 GMT).

The travel ban will not apply to US citizens, or to the spouse, parent, legal guardian, or child of a US citizen or lawful permanent resident, and most siblings under the age of 21.

"The potential for undetected transmission of the virus by infected individuals seeking to enter the United States from [Brazil] threatens the security of our transportation system and infrastructure and the national security," said the suspension order published by the White House on Sunday.

"We hope that'll be temporary, but because of the situation in Brazil, we're going to take every step necessary to protect the American people," Mr O'Brien said.

He added that "we'll take a look at the other countries on a country-by-country basis for sure".

US President Donald Trump suggested earlier this week that he was considering imposing a ban on travel from Brazil.

The US currently leads the world in coronavirus cases. It has over 1.6 million known cases and is nearing 100,000 deaths linked to the virus.

Sunday's announcement is the latest travel restriction imposed by the US in a bid to combat the spread of the virus.

Foreign nationals who have recently visited China, Iran, the European Schengen area, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland are already barred from entry to the US.

Canada and the US also recently agreed to extend the closure of their shared border to non-essential travel.

What is the situation across Brazil?
Brazil recently overtook Russia with regards to known cases of the virus. President Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly dismissed the risks posed by the virus.

The number of deaths in Brazil has been doubling roughly every two weeks, compared to about every two months in the UK, four months in France, and five months in Italy.

Experts have warned that the real figure may be far higher due to a lack of testing.

The rising death toll and infections in Brazil are clearly worrying the rest of the world, but President Jair Bolsonaro shows no signs of treating it seriously. On Sunday, he was out once again, mingling with hundreds of supporters in Brasilia - and once again he was not wearing a mask.

President Bolsonaro seems more caught up in fighting political battles - he's facing accusations of political interference to protect his family - than looking at how to rein in the country's spiralling health crisis. These past few days have revealed some ugly truths here. Not only has Brazil become one of the epicentres of the coronavirus crisis, but it's clear that the president and his team are unable - or even willing - to lead the country out of it.

There's no doubt this decision by President Trump, a man whom President Bolsonaro has always openly admired, will sting - but the question is, will it do anything to change the Brazilian leader's approach?

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said business owners, including store owners and fast food restaurants, have the right to refuse service to people without masks. He said that was built into the law.

He said the habit of wearing of masks within the population can be reinforced with the assistance of the private and public sectors through strong policies and strong moral suasion. He said Government could not legislate everything into law and lock people up for not physically distancing or washing hands, for example. He said, however, the Attorney General is exploring legislation for wearing masks in public.

Deyalsingh said there were some people who could not wear masks because of chronic conditions such as asthma. He said it was important for those who could wear masks do so in order to protect those who could not.

CMO Dr Roshan Parasram said people with asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases should communicate with their doctor to see if they could wear masks. He said they could possibly get a letter from their doctor exempting them from wearing the mask. He also said, if possible, they should get someone else to do their shopping for them or explore using delivery and pickup apps.

^in other words if u can't wear a mask, stay home!

if CMO say to get a letter it means they really going to make this mandatory, especially as we open up the country more

I have asthma and I workout and have ran as much as 10km with my mask. It's totally fine. I've gotten used to it unlike many others. All this carbon dioxide poisoning sheit is BS. And if you're worried get a mask with the exhale valves.

Not saying that everyone is fine wearing a mask, but those complaining are total idiots. It's either this or we risk another outbreak. Such a simple easy solution and yet ppl will complain.

people with breathing difficulties should not be wearing a mask. if you feel suffocated, dizzy or lightheaded when wearing a mask, take it off and get fresh air.

Also, keep in mind there is currently no recommendation by the WHO for everybody to wear masks.

Probably mid-June in Phase 4.....same with Gyms I suspect too.

I expect Phase 4 to be the re-opening of mostly everything including bars and dining in, however, they will probably have limits on the number of persons inside and enforce mask wearing where possible.

The Prime Minister advises that he will address the media again on Saturday after meeting with the COVID response team. Any decision to accelerate the phased reopening of the economy will be expressed at that time.

WHO using outdated info. we know now that many ppl are silent carriers- so feeling 'healthy' doh mean u not infected- hence the reason CDC and MOH change the policy advising to wear masks.

aside from the legal issue of breaching the regulations, are those barbers wearing masks while cutting ppl hair? the very nature of that activity makes it very high risk as social distancing is impossible during the haircut which could be anywhere from half an hour to an hour. he is breathing over you for a long period of time- if he have corona u sure will walk away infected yourself.

The WHO is well aware of it. Their guidance is current. If you click the link, they have very good, comprehensive, nuanced guidance.

https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease ... -and-masks

The type of mask use we see in the public (chin mask wearing, frequent touching of the mask, lowering the mask to talk, lack of hand-washing or sanitizing after putting on/taking off the mask, placing the used mask on common surfaces, re-using masks, infrequent washing of masks, mask use while exercising and sweating) - are potential vectors for disease (and not only COVID19). There is no study covering use of masks in the community. The long term effects of this grand experiment are unknown.

The WHO identifies specific circumstances when mask should be used and how to dispose of the mask. The WHO position is that general mask use by the community (the side show we have now) is unsubstantiated by evidence.

My personal position: We haven't had a documented case of COVID19 in over a month. The 3000+ tests taken so far are telling us the prevalence is extremely low or nil in our population. From a statistical point of view, people are at greater risk for mask-related complications (hypoxia and respiratory infections) than from COVID here in Trinidad.

It is a completely different scenario to the USA where the virus is in rampant community spread. We should not blindly follow the CDC guidance with interventions that are inappropriate to our situation.

The way i see it is the masks wearing can minimize our risk of reopening if there are any undetected cases where ppl declined to get a test, or are asymptomatic- without it, reopening can give those few cases the fuel it needs to spread. so if there are 2 cases, it turns into 4, then 10, then a super spreader helps turn that into 50 and so on, all within a few weeks- and these cases since they would likely be local spread would be difficult or impossible to trace- and the only way to gain back control we would have to go right back into phase 0 (lockdown).

EU governments ban malaria drug for COVID-19, trial paused as safety fears grow

Matthias Blamont, Alistair Smout and Emilio Parodi

PARIS/LONDON/MILAN (Reuters) - European governments moved on Wednesday to halt the use of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 patients, and a second global trial was suspended, further blows to hopes for a treatment promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The moves by France, Italy and Belgium followed a World Health Organization decision on Monday to pause a large trial of hydroxychloroquine due to safety concerns.

A UK regulator said on Wednesday that a separate trial was also being put on hold, less than a week after it started. The study, being led by the University of Oxford and partly funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was expected to involve as many as 40,000 healthcare workers.

"All hydroxychloroquine trials in COVID-19 remain under close review" while investigators assess any further risks, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said in an email to Reuters.

The swift moves by authorities in countries hit hardest by the pandemic highlighted the challenge for governments scrambling to find ways to treat patients and control the novel coronavirus.

After early reports that it might help some patients, regulators in several countries had allowed hydroxychloroquine to be used as a potential COVID-19 treatment.
