A Tropical Wave located over the Central Atlantic that is expected late Wed/early Thurs is capturing my attention. Will monitor.

The tons of sporadic rain in piarco today did nothing to bring the goddamn temperature down.

turns out it was the hottest day for the year -but no heat advisory from met office

Sweltering heat continues across Trinidad and Tobago, with both islands recording their hottest temperatures for 2023 yesterday.

According to data from the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), Piarco recorded a maximum high temperature of 33.4°C, the highest for the year, while at Crown Point, a maximum high of 32.4°C was recorded, which tied the maximum high on August 5 for the highest temperature at the site for the year.

T&T has entered the secondary peak of the local heat season, which runs from March through October, with this peak beginning in August through October. Light winds, relatively high moisture, and high-pressure systems between tropical waves and cyclones allow warmer temperatures to develop and persist across the country during this time of year.

This year, with record high temperatures across the Atlantic Ocean, according to the TTMS, “above normal sea-surface temperatures generally promote warmer trade winds that blow over the islands.” Sea surface temperatures near T&T are above normal, between 29°C and 30°C. The result—weak easterly to southeasterly winds, intense sunshine, high relative humidity, and urbanised areas—lead to hot days where maximum temperatures exceed 34°C in Trinidad and 33°C in Tobago, particularly in cities.

Yesterday, temperatures across the country ranged from 32°C to 36°C, but how hot it felt outside, known as the heat index, was much higher. According to data from automated and personal weather stations, heat indices across both islands reached levels that are considered dangerous, between 41°C and 51°C.

More hot temperatures are forecast today, with a tropical wave forecast to produce cloudiness, showers, and isolated thunderstorms by tomorrow into Thursday, keeping maximum high temperatures down compared to the past week.

Didn't catch the weather report last night for this. Looks like a passing Tropical Wave and the ITCZ directly over Tobago.

Met Office: Low rainfall, high temps for next 15 days

he Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is advising of a period of low rainfall amounts over the next couple weeks.

In an update the Met Office said:

"A wet day with rainfall amounts ranging between 10-15 mm are expected on the 16th of August while relatively wet days with rainfall amounts less than 5.0 mm are expected on all other days.

"The daily rainfall totals are forecast to range between 0.0 mm to 15.0 mm across different farmlands across the islands, especially along the eastern and western coastal areas of Trinidad, and Tobago. The fifteen-day rainfall totals ranging between 40.0 mm and 70.0 mm in Trinidad, and 50.0 mm in Tobago."

Additionally, regarding temperatures, the Met Office said some days may have real-feel temperatures as high as 48 degrees Celsius:

"The maximum temperatures are expected to become warm to hot, with daily temperatures ranging between 32°C to 34°C throughout the period. However, temperatures are expected to have a real-feel or feels-like between 32°C to 48°C on most days. The minimum temperatures will range between 25°C to 28°C during most nights/early mornings, dropping lower in rural areas and valleys.

In Trinidad, one always has to be prepared for flash flooding, especially when the Met Office say to stand up is to run.

Late August to October is usually high Atlantic ocean hurricane activity because the sun is passing directly overhead our latitude back toward the equator, and the ITCZ follows the sun. So the high moisture coming off Cape Verde Africa has the proper conditions of horizontal wind shear to start a rotating system.
