I was told the police were also of that view wrt to gps being able to remotely shutdown a car after carjacked/stolen
in case it shutdown in the middle of a highway or something and cause third party accident

but an insurance guy told me the other day that they changed their tune and dont mind if a car is remotely shutdown

dunno the insurance ramifications of who is liable in a case of accident caused by bandits being shutdown and other cars slam into it

maj. tom wrote:You can't put a kill switch in a vehicle for when it's already in motion. In fact it probably illegal to have a device to deliberately kill the engine/electronics of a modern vehicle in motion with a person inside it. It will lose control from brakes to power steering and cause a serious accident involving innocent 3rd party people. And the liability of that falls on? That's why there are starter kill switches and not the latter.

There is nothing you can do if you get hijacked other than police/GPS recovery services + insurance.

I know the GPS units can be wired and programmed to a do a remote shutdown. It's in the instruction/installation manual. Not sure about the hybrid cars regarding that. I was told by an alarm installer that hybrids can't have a kill switch like how it's usually done. Something about the different voltage rail for the starter and microchip computers controlling the whole operation that not good to interfere with.

But I'm sure there are 3rd party companies that make electronic kill switch kits for hybrid. I using an old time steering wheel lock these days. I accept the fact that nothing will ever stop a pro thief if they want the car.

steering wheel lock is a passive device, like a kill switch, gas lock etc
traditional way to defeat that is just cut the wheel with hacksaw

the vast majority of cars stolen now are live car jackings, that is what most ppl should be worried about and be aware of their surroundings when entering/exiting their car in parking lots etc

its really only old cars that easy to hotwire, trucks like h100 or easy to hotwire hybrids like aqua that are "broken in" and hotwired these days

A little again and you may have to keep your vehicle in a cocktail of mechanical disrepair that guarantees only you can drive it.
