In Messi's absence I thought Neymar stepped up. His finishing was off, but his play was positive and he created some chances for others. Seri Roberto had another impressive display and Bartra looked solid alongside Pique.

The Spanish La Liga has reaffirmed that FC Barcelona would not be allowed to play in the league, if Catalonia wins its independence from Spain.

The regional elections will be held on Sunday, 27 September, and the LFP (governing body of principal football leagues in Spain) president Javier Tebas explained that the Catalan clubs (FC Barcelona and Espanyol) would not be allowed to feature in La Liga.

"I made my position clear some months ago,” he said, as quoted by AS.

“I have not spoken about the issue of independence, which is a sensitive one and not something to be discussed at the assembly.

“I have not spoken about a league without Barcelona. I do not think it will happen because Catalonia will continue to be a part of Spain.

“(In the case of independence) Catalan clubs would not be able to play in La Liga because the Sports law prohibits it."

Tebas insisted that it would be a massive loss for the league if Spain broke up, but remained confident it won’t happen.

"We would all lose. If Spain is broken up, if Catalonia ceases to be part of Spain we will all lose,” he added.

"I can't see it. The majority of Spaniards also have a say in what happens to Catalonia. It is a national league because it is for the whole of Spain."

Pro-independence parties in Spain's Catalonia region have won an absolute majority in regional elections.

The main separatist alliance and a smaller nationalist party won 72 seats in the 135-seat regional parliament.

However, the pro-independence parties fell just short of getting 50% of the vote, winning 1.9 million out of 4 million ballots cast.

The separatists say the victory gives them a clear mandate to form an independent Catalan state.

Spain's central government in Madrid has pledged to challenge any unilateral moves towards independence in court.

The "Junts per Si" ("Together for Yes") alliance won 62 seats. If it combines with the far-left separatist CUP party, which won 10 seats, it will be able to form a parliamentary majority.

"We have won," Catalan regional President Artus Mas told his cheering supporters late on Sunday.

After a celebration rally, the pro-independence camp's leaders said they would now proceed towards the creation of an independent Catalan state.

"We have a clear, absolute majority in the Catalan parliament to go ahead," Mr Mas said.
