Waiting for it to reach a "critical stage" is almost as good as suicide. Sure, there is a stigma. But that's only because people's self preservation inclinations kick in. Better to deal with a little stigma and live, than be stigma free while you're alive and leave nothing but stigma for your friends and family, after you die suspiciously?

So i make a turn today, No cigs in most places, No cement in a few hardwares, (heard alot more on facebook about lack of cement). Slowly getting worst and worst, they need to kick back up production in alot of areas to restock the market, which would be hard because no shipping, wdff

Models shift to predict dramatically more U.S. deaths as states relax social distancing

A key model favored by the White House nearly doubled its prediction to 134,000 fatalities by August

The document projects north of 175,000 new cases of Covid-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus, each day.

Dr. Christopher Murray, the director of IHME, told reporters on a call Monday the primary reason for the increase is many states’ “premature relaxation of social distancing.”

For the first time, Murray explained, the model is factoring in data from four different cell phone providers showing a major uptick in Americans’ going out in public.

This rise of mobility in the last week or 10 days is likely leading to an increase in transmission, he said.

the 80-100k dead in USA initially predicted by summer seemed high and pie in the sky
at 70k deaths now, it doesnt seem so far away.

relaxing will simply mean that many of the small towns that not exposed to outside world will surely get their share of cases now and take off.

The current projections may put US travelers on international no-entry lists.

I can't say that I blame them. The crew has to layover at a local hotel in one of the worst Covid-19 hotpots in the world.

from the press conference:

last case was 26th April.

"I have to be as pessimistic as possible to ensure we are not missing something" - CMO.

The last two cases (#115, #116) was very concerning for the CMO. He is concerned about cluster formation around those cases and wants to wait a full 14 days from those cases to be in the clear.

The numbers look good, but cmo's right to be pessimistic. This whole thing can start all over again (wave 2, wave 3,...)

not a few, many many businesses doing private arrangements

many gated compounds have doublesmen doing delivery on a morning...

I live a stones throw from a popular place on ave selling food by the pound
they are closed but everyday I see vehicles outside and seemingly persons inside
dont know if they are doing private catering delivery as well but there is a need for that.

Trinidad unofficially reopened on May 1st.
That's when I saw a spike of businesses starting to advertise about being back but under different arrangements (call first, delivery etc).

Frank, remove imported cases and that "first wave" is almost nothing. With borders closed and strong surveillance testing, the risk of a second wave or third wave being comparable to the first is not there, to the point of negligence if it happens.

True, but only in the near future when we keep this up. What about when borders start re-opening and trinis get complacent. We haven't eradicated the virus, we still don't know where 115 and 116 got it from eh.

As far as Trinis concerned, we survived the Covid deaths more or less unscathed. The economy took a hard blow and many people can't recover from that. A lot of people renting property illegally came to light. So many broken issues for the Government to fix that were revealed in this situation. Time to open back the country, but keep the borders closed until USA is clean.

Even if there is a 2nd wave of deaths, the attitude of the population will be very different and belligerent compared to the first time. Nobody going to do this again with an SOE. The reality of deaths like in Spain, Italy, China or USA never even touched us and we will shrug it off.

Yes 100% agree, and it's inevitable there will be spread later this year, hell even this month as we haven't eradicated yet.

Can't agree with this more. The US right now is one #hithole covid country.

Business Insider

The US has imported millions of low-quality masks that don't block virus particles enough, putting lives at risk

May 4, 2020, 11:12 AM

Romeo Ranoco/Reuters

A federal lab found that many of the imported N95- and KN95-style masks they tested failed to block out 95% of particles like they are supposed to.

The FDA granted emergency-use authorization for the US to import masks from all over the world to mitigate a shortage in healthcare settings.

If a mask has ear loops, any decorative add-ons, or no marking or approval numbers it may be counterfeit.

As the demand for masks increases in the US, a federal lab found many of imported N95- and KN95-style masks did not perform as advertised.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health tested 67 masks that had recently been imported to the US and found that 60% failed to block out 95% of particles.

The typical N95 mask is supposed to block out 95% of particles from the air, as per the name. Those particles can include infectious bacteria and viral particles. A KN95 is equivalent to an N95 mask but designed to meet Chinese mask standards, which are slightly different to American ones.

For frontline healthcare workers, wearing a properly fitted mask could be lifesaving. But many of the masks NIOSH tested were not up to code.

NIOSH found that one KN95 mask, which was packaged with an unauthorized Food and Drug Administration logo, filtered out only 35% of particles. Another filtered only 50%.

Many of the imported masks used ear loops instead of the tight-fitting NIOSH-approved headbands, even though N95 masks work only when they fit tightly around the nose and mouth to create a seal that virus-laced droplets cannot penetrate. KN95 masks use ear loops, which fit Chinese standards but not American ones because they can create a looser seal around the face.
