Also said he has dementia, he should not be in possession of a drivers permit or be behind the wheel of a vehicle

Correct, but the problem with that is that many people won't be aware of this until an accident like this takes place. I've seen enough family members in denial about early signs of dementia, so it's hard to blame anyone for this. People get sick, sometimes suddenly, these things are unpredictable.

My grandad was killed by a driver who was feeling fainty (later he realised it was diabetes).

This is why driverless cars can't come soon enough. Humans aren't reliable.

Very troubling indeed if initial reports are accurate, that someone in his condition is permitted to operate a vehicle.

My only concern with this is, based on the layout of Couva hospital, I still cant picture how he end up in there :?
The car park is a ways off from the entrance and even when you turn off the main road into the yard, you would have had to deliberately drive heading to the entrance and not the car park *shrugs*

Nothing a $60 medical outside the licensing office cant fix.

Only realistic remedy for something like that is to charge people who falsely claim they have no impairments, physical or otherwise that will negatively affect their driving capabilities. Charge them for false declarations on a government form or whatever the crime is, then go after their personal assets after the maximum coverage by the insurance is reached, if the damages surpass such.

Not pretty, but it has to happen.

The man giving the $60 medical outside LO should also be jailed for malpractice.

AN Arima teenager died when his car spun out of control and crashed on Saturday.

At about 5 a.m., Malick Alexander, 19, was driving his silver Mitsubishi Lancer east along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway when, upon reaching Maloney, he lost control of the car.

The vehicle then crossed the median and came into contact with a Ford Ranger van proceeding in the opposite direction.

The Lancer, police said, hit with such force that the car was almost split.

Alexander was thrown from the car and landed about 20 feet away.

He died on impact.

Police suspect that he was not wearing his seat-belt at the time.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, the Sunday Express was told, sustained minor injuries.

Probably a manufacturer's design. If the airbags go off without seatbelt, it will likely kill you with a broken neck or cervical spinal fracture due to the non-restrained forward impact.
https://ohsonline.com/articles/2008/03/ ... -risk.aspx

Airbags are strictly a supplemental device. In fact, ALL owner's manual I have ever read states this explicitly that you must wear seatbelts and not rely on airbags. Because no one knows the conditions of the airbags unless they were serviced by an authorized mechanic, or if they will fire in various collision scenarios.

But who even reads the owner's manual these days?
