PNM DID IT TOO
AG defends Alleyne’s 25 election projects in St Joseph

People’s National Movement (PNM) candidates “crossed the line” in the last general election by directly using State resources in the election campaign.
This was stated last night by Attorney General Anand Ramlogan in his defence of Ian Alleyne undertaking some 25 projects in St Joseph and for which he has come under fire.
Alleyne, the host of Crime Watch, is the United National Congress’s (UNC) candidate in Monday’s by-election.
“Fleets from WASA, Petrotrin and other State enterprises were used to campaign and transport voters, CEPEP and URP were targeted and used to beef up crowds at their rallies and the advertising bill for the Government ran parallel to the PNM’s political ad campaign. Indeed they were strategically coordinated,” Ramlogan said of the PNM’s campaign in the last general election.
The People’s Partnership advertising bill, he said, was less than half of what the PNM bill was when they were in office.
Ramlogan maintained there is no illegality in Alleyne getting work done and presiding over State projects in the St Joseph constituency.
Responding to concerns raised by former House speaker Nizam Mohammed, Ramlogan said the judgment he (Mohammed) referred to was not applicable to Alleyne. (See story below.)
“The Abu Bakr case is irrelevant, as Mr (Yasin) Abu Bakr was not a candidate and the concern was the alleged arrangement between the PNM and Abu Bakr for him to terrorise and intimidate UNC supporters so that they will be intimidated and not go out to vote,” said Ramlogan.
“In exchange for this, he was allegedly promised lucrative State contracts and Mr Manning did in fact attempt to give him the disputed parcel of land. Mr Alleyne is not a contractor, but simply a candidate who is responding to the desperate pleas from constituents who need urgent work because of the failure of the former member of Parliament,” Ramlogan added.
He said it would be improper for the Government to cease work in any part of the country on the simple basis that there was a by-election.
“During the period of the 18-18 tie when general election was inevitable and inescapable, the PNM emptied the Treasury even though they did not have a constitutional majority to validly spend money. No objection was heard from those who are now mounting this political platform against the UNC. It demonstrates political hypocrisy and politics of convenience,” said Ramlogan.
Ramlogan said there was a bias against Alleyne and targeted attacks on him.
“There is a manifest bias and malicious attitude towards Ian Alleyne because there are some who feel that a university degree and prerequisite for public office... They fail to appreciate his ordinary, humble touch with the common man, which is his greatest asset and political strength,” he said.
Government, he said, has a duty to serve the people regardless of how the voting goes.
He said it was obvious the neglect of a constituency would be highlighted during an election, but that does not mean it should be ignored because of the polls.
Ramlogan said it was interesting the other candidates—the PNM’s Terrence Deyalsingh and the Independent Liberal Party’s Om Lalla—have not disclosed and they have not complained they asked for help from State agencies and were refused.
“So the criticism of Ian is somewhat misplaced and fails to highlight their own inefficiency,” said Ramlogan.

Once I'd like to hear "PNM did it, but we are not going to". I don't think I'll hold my breath. Mebbe he feel he pointing out PNM hypocrisy?

but Pios you not being fair.

In the last General Election PNM won by their largest margin in Arouca/Maloney

Half of Trincity (the wealthier half) is in Arouca/Maloney.

Somehow I believe you dont live in that half of Trincity :|

UNC won by their biggest margin in Chag West (but then lost it) PNM won by their biggest margin in Arouca/Maloney,

Give me Millenium Park over Cacadee Road.

Ummm maloney has slums, check the housing projects/apartment buildings. When we did the 2011 census we found all kinda 12-15 people living in ONE dwelling unit which was meant for 2-3 people. Same for peas tree development and the other one past eldo brown in el dorado. There is a house close to hillview college that had 30 people in it, by now it prolly has grown because 4 women were pregnant. They all had no jobs.

PNM established these housing projects and ensured they were ram crammed with pnmites. It doesn't matter if uncle and niece sleeping on the same mattress. Maloney residents are also responsible for the crime in these areas.

Most of arouca is also a big ghetto. PNM has no issue if their people live in the ghetto, and those people proud of it also.

You will not find overcrowded dwelling units/houses in Millenium Park/Trincity. People here are civilised and have jobs. Even Cacadee Road is not over crowded.

That "half" you speak of is concentrated in one or few areas, unlike the entire beetham/laventille where the people live in actual chit and eat dirt/live off the dump.

Another key factor is "Trincity" itself used to fall under St. Augustine which was always UNC.

The pnmebc decided to move trincity to the arouca/maloney constituency...which was always pnm.

Way to make those votes not count.

Is small ting doh, Kams pic still in de airport. Plenty time for she and Jack to make up in time for 2015 elections. This is just a mega plan to get rid of the useless COP.

I dont see how 12-15 ppl living in one unit is PNM fault no more than the same occurring in the slums of Bangladesh, Spring Village, Union Village and Caratal are UNC's fault.

Most of Arouca is not a big ghetto, Jack Warner and his neighbours prove otherwise.

I think your "pnmebc" may have had Trincity in Tunapuna not St. Augustine which is one constituency over (although I this it was part of Arouca North with Jarret Narine, but this point is moot)

The fact is everybody is identifying every PNM supporter as coming out of Laventille/Beetham. Yet in the lasted election it proved that the most ethnically heterogeneous and richest part of the country (East/West Corridor and San Fernando) support the PNM, no vote split here.

Laventille and East POS slums existed prior to 1956. The PNM attempted to remedy it as best that they could but it still wasnt good enough. Public and private housing developments in Arouca and Arima were attempts to relieve crowding in the capital, otherwise Laventille would have been worst off.

And while you continue to beat your Laventille drum, in much as PNM have failed them, they see themselves worst off with the UNC. The UNC put up a known gang leader as a candidate for LGE who is now deceased, they attempted to stop gentrification of East POS like if it was a smelter and they locked up many youth with no charges for the SoE.

You could continue to tote and we know will see more after Monday night and you will continue to pound Laventille while them and most middle to upper class neighbourhoods in T&T vote PNM.

No it simply proves beetham/laventille people are living in other areas now. They multiply at an alarming rate and go rent (without paying it) in the various slums the pnm has created nationwide.

I don't "pound" laventille, I simply have no pity or concern for their existence because they allow themselves to live that way and they love it.

Nah, they have newspapers from your work, I prefer to give it to the Bangladesh, Spring Village, Union Village, Caratal, etc residents who refuse to "split the vote" and "vote for the party of their ancestors" and other coded language.
