Yeah those, I usually fish for reds with that light line. Usually throw them away at the end of the day. If I am fishing deep or with heavy line I would use stainless steel or something.

Anybody on the forum have experience with Okuma reels?

yeah i have one, the okuma avenger baitrunner abf65, held up great so far and dirt cheap. If you don't fish hard all year, its a nice cheap reel. People heave had bail arm problems but mine has been good rollers handling braid. My dad is a self professed believer in those mustad 92571's. 2 - 2/0
Biggest catches on a 2/0 was a 13lb cleaned mutton snapper on a grunt head.


oh and when you using circles, don't yank! snell it and let it set for itself, but to be honest, if your meat fishing to eat (no release) and actively setting hooks, regular j's are the most efficient, particularly like fish who like to peck and not take.

Mustad 92571 Bait holder Hook

Those are the baitholder versions with barbed shanks and snell eye(nickel), the regular plain shank, beaked bronze finish is what they sell as live bait hooks. I actually modify some of my hooks when i can't get circles in small sizes, i'll post some before after pics tomorrow.

Yeah I love my 3/0 live bait. I usually buy a box of a hundred at the start of each year.

How is the Okuma drag? is it comparable in smoothness to penn etc? I would like to see how u modify the hooks too

The okuma is what i use for surf fishing, the drag is probably the most dependable part, the baitrunner is actually alot smoother than penn's live liner (nearly freespool) and the drag itself is a bit small(drag stack) but strong. 8 bearings for a smooth retrieve. People haul sharks on it but durability is really the question. They have some stronger stuff higher up their line though. Really come a long way over the years has okuma. I trust penn for durability.
The hooks as you can see, follow classic designs i.e mustad and owner forms. I chose the mustad nicked coated short shanked live bait hooks(94151), and using a small hand vice, bend the tip by applying off axis pressure to the point so as to not dull it, and a small bend on the shank above the eye to help round off the form. I got into circles by bending these and they've worked well enough to convince me to fish circles more often particularly with small fish that like to swallow.

I hav those same live hooks in 3X strength for fishing big fish...i usually order ah couple boxes of circles an other hook once every couple years...

I have an okuma Cedros spinning reel that I got a couple yrs ago and I have to admit okuma has impressed me so far (my first okuma ever)..... The drag is really smooth and it has proven to be really durable landing nuff kings and dolphin over 15lbs, tarpon to 70lbs as well as going for a swim a couple times. I haven't serviced it since I got it and the handle still turns effortlessly with the slightest of touches and the drag is smooth still.
All in all I would buy another mid to high end okuma np after always having owned penns and shimanos it's refreshing to know other reel companies are on the same level of quality at competitive prices....

I had a Daiwa 7000c Silver reel about 14 years ago, good solid reel and nice drag. the only problem was the handle used to get slack after throwing jigs constantly. the plastic bushing at the head of the screw to tighten the handle eventually broke and I gave it away when I couldn't get a replacement. Had a fellow rock fisherman who use to swear by the Daiwa BG line up.
Right now I have a small Daiwa Laguna Hardbodyz reel, it came with a spare spool, have them spooled with 10 and 12 lb test, that is my small reel. It built solid and the drag is good, no issues so far.

I have a Shakespeare Tidewater and the drag is absolute crap, with a half turn of the knob the drag goes from totally free to locked down, no kind of range at all. The body doesn't hold up well to corrosion either, that is the reel I want to change, that's why I was asking about Okuma.

Ande is the best of the lot and is the line most IGFA tournaments recommend. Trilene is a stiffer line with more memory pound for pound when compared to Ande. Hi Seas cannot compare to either really.

Strange, i have the exact opposite opinion lol. I find that big game has less memory and softer than ande. I only use ande though. Very resistant to abrasion and breaks at rating.

Banking,we went just off yara,straight out to the buoy outside mittal then back down sando side about 3 miles north of the "house",A cutlassfish infestation lols...

I went in d gulf today to do some banking, PAIN. 4 cro cro, 1 bechin, 1 small salmon and one 2lb ancho. Water was real bad and plenty rain too. Since this year start banking really not good, well for me anyway.

Only caught cat fish this weekend...

Each time I set my long line before i'd get back to shore i'd have a double header. Landed afew similar size cat fish, but got fedup so only used my rods at night not catching anything. Better than nothing but not what I was looking for.
