MEDIA RELEASE
Five Firearms Seized, Priority Offenders Arrested
Police seized five firearms and arrested several priority offenders during State of Emergency Operations conducted across multiple policing divisions over the past 48 hours.
At 12:40 am today, officers from the Barataria CID responded to reports of gunfire outside of a bar located at El Socorro Road. Upon arrival they met an off duty officer, who reported seeing a man armed with a revolver. The off duty officer reportedly drew his service firearm, identified himself, and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon and surrender. The suspect complied and the officer secured the revolver, containing five rounds of .38 special ammunition and one spent casing. The suspect, a 30-year-old priority offender, was arrested and taken to the Barataria Police Station.
Officers, acting on information from ongoing enquiries, conducted a search in a dense bushy area off Abraham Extension Road, Pranz Gardens, Claxton Bay, in the Central Division yesterday. During the search, they were accompanied by an 18-year-old suspect and they discovered and seized a suspected M16-type firearm with a scope. The rifle was secured and made safe. Two suspects were also arrested for Possession of Cannabis during the operation.
In the South Western Division, officers observed a man wanted for wounding with intent, and his common-law wife, near their vehicle, a grey and white Mazda pickup, in Guapo. A search of the vehicle uncovered a 12-gauge cartridge and a homemade shotgun. Both were informed of the offenses, cautioned, and arrested.
Yesterday, North-Eastern Division Task Force officers, acting on information about firearms linked to gang activity, searched a bushy area along the mountain ridge between Geranium Drive, Morvant, and Laventille Road, San Juan. Approximately 45 feet from the roadway, they discovered and seized a Taurus 9mm pistol and a magazine containing six rounds of 9-mm ammunition hidden under a sheet of galvanize.
On Saturday, during an operation in the Northern Division North, officers searched a drain on Sanchez Street, Arima, and discovered a Glock magazine with 6 rounds of 9mm rounds in a wall cavity and a plastic packet containing 5.81 grams of cocaine.
During an anti-crime operation in the Gasparillo Police District on Saturday, known drug blocks and priority offenders were targeted. Officers found a Colt .38 revolver, 17 rounds of .38 ammunition, a quantity of cannabis and arrested one suspect in connection with the seizure.
Investigations are ongoing into the matters.
