...‘He must be stopped’
By Michelle Loubon

Story Created: Mar 19, 2015 at 11:06 PM ECT

Story Updated: Mar 19, 2015 at 11:06 PM ECT
President of the National Muslim Women’s Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago Soraya Khan has said Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley “should be stopped before he makes more unsavoury comments and apologise to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar” for the comment he made during a public meeting at Johnny’ Green Acres, at Brazil Village, Arima, on Tuesday night.

In dealing with the actions of the Prime Minister, Rowley had told the political meeting “....And she could jump high, she could jump low, she could drink this, she could drink that, she could bark at meh dog, I go ignore she cat.”

A number of leaders from other women’s organisations also believed Rowley should apologise to Persad-Bissessar and other women.

They were asked for their views yesterday at a reception hosted by Persad-Bissessar in honour of International Womens’ Day, at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s. During her address, Persad-Bissessar paid tribute to chairman of the Network of NGOs Hazel Brown, who is abroad.

Khan said: “If we don’t stop him in his tracks, he would continue to make unsavoury statements. He has not only insulted Kamla, he has insulted all the women of the country.

“He has insulted his wife and his daughters. He should apologise. Whom will he attack next? Will he go to the children in kindergarten? It should not be condoned.”

Cordinator of the Brahma Kumaris Women’s Wing Organisation Kay Narinesingh said: “Definitely. Rowley should apologise. He has insulted all the women.”

Chairman of the Womens’ Forum Chandra Ramlogan said: “In light of the recent sound bites circulating on the web, we the women of the COP remind all politicians of the recent Code of Ethics (initiated by Archbishop Joseph Harris) for political parties signed by them. The youth of the nation are looking on.”

A group of women from the Couva Chamber of Commerce said: “It’s insulting. He should apologise. It is downright disrespectful.”

UNC group: All women insulted
By Joel Julien

Story Created: Mar 19, 2015 at 11:02 PM ECT

Story Updated: Mar 19, 2015 at 11:02 PM ECT

OPPOSITION Leader Dr Keith Rowley has insulted “every woman in this country with the disparaging and offensive language” he used, said chairman of the United National Congress’ Women’s Arm, Stacy Roopnarine.
The UNC Women’s Arm yesterday expressed outrage at Rowley’s comments, made on a political platform on Tuesday night, and are now calling on him to apologise to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and “every woman of this nation for his disrespectful and derogatory comments”.
While delivering the feature address at a People’s National Movement’s (PNM) political meeting in Brazil Village, Rowley made a quip that has been deemed to be sexist by some.
“And she could jump high, she could jump low, she could drink this, she could drink that, she could bark at meh dog, I go ignore she cat,” said Rowley.
In response, the UNC Women’s Arm condemned Rowley for his remarks.
“At that meeting, Keith Rowley, as leader of the PNM, Leader of the Opposition and an aspiring prime minister, insulted not only the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar but indeed every woman in this country with the disparaging and offensive language used,” a release stated yesterday.
Roopnarine said the UNC Women’s Arm is “extremely disappointed that in today’s society, when women have struggled for decades and fought for equality in treatment to take their place side by side with our brothers, that you still have a leader making such distasteful comments against women”.
“Dr Rowley made it very clear in his statements, which are too derogatory to repeat, that he has no respect for women,” the release added.
“It is indeed unfortunate that one would refer to any woman in such a manner as we all have sisters, mothers, grandmothers or daughters.
“We are indeed saddened that the children of this land had to hear those comments as our children learn from our leaders.”
The UNC Women’s Arm said it will continue to “fight for the rights of women and continue to defend our sisters”.
“We also call upon the PNM Women’s League to stand up for the rights of women in this country and explain if this is what their party stands for.”

When Ganga Singh drop pipe in kamala constituency and the water pressure was good wey these women groups was?
Political pipers at St Augustine

Independent - October 4, 2000
By Raffique Shah

IF the platform exchange between Public Utilities Minister Ganga Singh and Education Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is going to be standard fare at public meetings in the run-up to the general election, then I fear politics has degenerated to an “X”-rated level that is unacceptable in any decent society. This, coming from someone who is no prude, should alert these (and other) politicians that while an election campaign is “open season”, we expect them to maintain certain standards below which vulgarity overtakes “picong”. Anyone who knows me well also knows not to engage me in a “cussout” or “talking dirty”. So it’s not that I am being hypocritical, that I do not accept some light banter or even the odd risque remark on a political platform.

But what I heard at St Augustine had me wondering whether the two ministers involved in the exchange had plied themselves with alcohol or some other mind-altering substance before their “sex play” on the stage. For those who did not hear Ganga and Kamla, let me try to precis the Jean-and-Dinah behaviour that was criticised by so many when a local play so titled ran into problems over the language used by the actresses. Boasting of his achievements as Public Utilities Minister, Ganga told the UNC faithful that he was the first minister with that portfolio who “dropped pipe all over the country”. To capitalise on the sexual connotation, he added that he “dropped pipe in Kamla’s constituency, plenty pipe”. He invited the audience to ask Kamla if he was not correct.

When she came to the microphone, Kamla took Ganga’s lewd suggestions several steps further. Yes, she said, Ganga did “drop pipe in Siparia”. But she couldn’t tell “the size of the pipe” although the “pressure of the water” was good. And to underscore the lewdness while attempting to preserve her character, she added that the “only pipe I know about is Dr Bissessar’s pipe”, referring to her husband. So now there was no question as to what kind of “pipe” was being discussed as a main item on the UNC platform.

Really, for a woman who is held in high esteem by supporters and non-supporters of the UNC, Kamla has disappointed, big time too. Critics of the UNC Government will not have been surprised at Ganga’s crudeness, that being the least of his sins since he came to office almost five years ago. Having been elevated from an obscure ex-NARite activist to Prime Minister Basdeo Panday’s “Inner Cabinet”, he has been responsible for negotiating controversial deals like the Innercob/InnCogen estate and the desalination plant. He has also become quite wealthy, thanks to his ministerial job and his wife’s high-level income at Point Lisas (as he himself explained sometime ago).

Money talks, as we all know, and with wealth comes the kind of mouth-muscle one may not have physically. So that pipsqueak Ganga, wearing state of the art stilts (gilded, no less) clearly feels he can defecate on anyone: we have seen this trait among ministers in previous PNM and NAR governments who believed that power was a lifetime legacy. Ganga is clearly of that mould, so for him, “dropping pipe” on anyone, even his Cabinet colleagues, cannot be ruled out. Obviously he wallows in wealth and power, so, logically, the masses will have to be contented with “pipe” from the platform or anywhere else.

But Kamla? Really, listening to this affable lady publicly pronouncing on the “size of pipe” Ganga “dropped”, to compound that with the “water pressure”, and end up confessing that she only knew about her husband’s “pipe”, was so nauseating. I couldn’t believe she would have jumped into the gutter with Ganga—except, of course, if she were looking for more “pipe”. If, following her graphic descriptions on the platform (which many students may have listened to via radio) some students were to question her on the dimensions of “pipe” they need in order to be successful, she would have to have to elaborate, to educate them, since she’s the “pipe” expert.

Jokes aside, I wonder what the normally vocal women’s groups will have to say about the minister’s conduct in St Augustine. When Iwer George put an Indian girl’s “bottom on de road” a few years ago, he was subjected to assaults from all quarters, none moreso than the Hindu Women’s Organisation, which called for the song to be banned. Cafra, another women’s NGO, has been harsh on calypsonians who have debased women in song, as has Prime Minister Panday, who was most offended when Sugar Aloes sang about his wife. Indeed, Carlos John was part of the NCC that banned Aloes from the Dimanche Gras show because of his “disrespect for women”.

Last week Wednesday, Carlos and Panday sat on the platform and applauded Ganga and Kamla. I suppose it’s okay for one from among them to assault people’s sensitivities with crude and rude behaviour. But should anything similar come from calypsonians (or journalists) it would be deemed a cardinal sin. That’s a clear case of the double standards that we have come to expect from politicians. And when the supporters of political parties endorse such crudeness, they, too, are guilty of “taking pipe” from Ganga or any other minister who dishes it out to them.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this column, I am no prude, so I am not offended by risque comments or jokes, depending on when and where they are made. I have heard comments in Parliament from several Speakers as well as members that could be deemed double entendre. Mostly, they were not in poor taste and people laughed at them. Too, when you are in private, there is nothing wrong with adults engaging in such “X-rated” talk. Such talk may be offensive to the very religious (although I’ve known some priests whose wit was...let’s say rated-R) and the very hypocritical.

A political platform, though, is not an adults-only theatre or a calypso tent or a comedy festival. Sure, it would be boring if the speakers can’t get their audiences to erupt in laughter from time to time. But there must be limits to what is acceptable language politics. The UNC in particular seems not to recognise these limits, what with the Prime Minister endorsing Dhanraj Singh’s “neck wine” at official functions and now the lewdness of Ganga and Kamla. I guess the next step will be for both ministers to “get down” on the stage and simulate how “Ganga drop pipe on Kamla”. That, accompanied by Gypsy singing Sparrow’s “Elaine, Harry and Mama” (I know he’s too much of a gentleman to debase himself) would be sure to draw huge crowds..and possibly the Moral Ethics Squad.

Please, let us not descend into the cesspit of vulgarity in order to capture a few votes. It’s disgusting behaviour from people who are meant to be exemplars in the society, especially in the case of the Education Minister, who our young, impressionable minds are influenced by in no small measure.

Another Sandy racist "Calcutta" statement takes ambiguity out of the question
The TOBAGO NEWS reported on Sunday that People's National Movement (PNM) candidate for the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election on January 21, Hilton Sandy, made his "Calcutta" racist statement on more than one political platform.

One of his statements created a national uproar for which he apologised. At that meeting he was endorsed by the PNM's national leader Keith Rowley although Rowley condemned Sandy a few days later, suggesting he should apologise. And the PNM is still endorsing Sandy as their candidate.

According to the Tobago paper Sandy made the same racist remarks at a meeting in Argyle, which was chaired by Rev Eastlyn Orr. Chief Secretary Orville London as well as Youth Speaker Cherish Trotman spoke on the platform.

The paper said it obtained a transcript of Sandy's comments and reported what the PNM politcian said: “...before I leave, I want to leave this with you all. There is a boat coming from Calcutta. Do you all know where Calcutta is?” The crowd responded: “Yes India!” Sandy continued: "Well, ok! After the 21st January, this boat will be coming to Tobago full with these people and they will invade Tobago if you all did not vote for the PNM!”

The Sandy statement that caused the reaction made reference to an earlier meeting. Here's what he said:
"Be strong, do not let anyone distract you, your are focused, you are on a good ship, because as I told another crew down the road there is a ship at Calcutta waiting to sail to Tobago.

"That ship is waiting to sail to Tobago; they are waiting to get the results of this election. If you bring the wrong results, Calcutta ship is coming down for you! You must stop that ship!
"We must not allow that ship to sail and don't want that ship to sal what you have to do? Vote for candidate Hilton... Great is the PNM, and it shall prevail. (THA candidate Hilton Sandy)

Kamla hurting over panel of CCJ judges
Thursday, February 3 2005

In a statement Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar said that the Opposition would come to the defence of the Judiciary against “any and every attempt at harassment and intimidation” from the Government. She was speaking on the Caribbean Court of Justice Bill, which the UNC was opposing in the House of Representatives yesterday. Her remarks were met with silence from Prime Minister Patrick Manning and Attorney General John Jeremie, but there was table-thumping from her colleagues. Persad-Bissessar paid tribute to members of the local Judiciary, whom, she said were dispensing justice fairly. They were the guardians of democracy and the soul of the nation, she said. She said it was the Judiciary that prevented the “soul of the nation” from being stolen.

She also criticised the composition of the CCJ, saying it did not reflect the population of the Caribbean. “You have appointed six judges. We are living in a country — and they say we calling race, but this is blatant. But not a single one of Indo-Trinidadian or Indian origin,” she said to supportive table-thumping. “How can that be when half the population in this country is of Indian origin? How do you expect them to have confidence in a court of that nature?” “It is the region we talking about,” Planning Minister Camille Robinson-Regis countered. However, Persad-Bissessar was equally quick on the draw.

“You have Suriname, Guyana. “You are giving strength to the argument (that the CCJ does not reflect the composition of the population of the region)” she said. She also criticised the process of appointment of the CCJ judges, saying the Caribbean heads of government had steadfastly taken control of the appointment, the discipline and the removal of the president of the CCJ. The method of appointment makes its appointees susceptible to political influence, she contended.

She said the brevity of the terms of office — two years in the case of the president and three years in the case of members of the Regional Judicial and Legal Service Commission ( RJLSC) — also ensured political dominance and dependence. Their tenure would fall within the purview of the sitting government. Persad-Bissessar noted that the heads of government, through their constitutional control over appointments in the local public service commissions and other commissions, also had the indirect power to appoint five members of the RJLSC, which in turn appoints the judges. people will accuse me of being PNM, i not, i may even vote UNC for the hell of it. in my constituency, PNM sure to get back in, so one vote ent gonna do nutten.

but i does see Dr. KRowley won a role in de next Shrek film:

All those allegations cannot compare to Rowley speaking about a womans nipple and cyat on a public Forum.

Best u leave this here rather than do the PNM image more harm.
