Whats scary is CAL has committed to addressing ALL refunds and claims from passengers.

While this is commendable from the airline, this is going to breed corruption with false claims.

Imagine working customer relations or finance and guiding your passenger friend how to win a bogus claim for $5000.

That estimated $15m in recovery just may double with racket.

so if govt gives pilots more other groups will kick a fuss
granted pilots have huge responsibility in their job and any stupid mistake even procedural which the public never hears about can lead to disciplinary problems

Also unlike teachers, soldiers, police and public servants there are a few hundred pilots as opposed to thousands in the others.

Demand and supply has to be a factor in negotiations and this ain't no communist utopia so pilots would have to be treated differently.

Then some will shop their resume around and possibly go to greener pastures, many airlines need pilots now to deal with increased demand. As said above CAL's main perk is tenure. Depending on their stage in life some pilots might opt out of that security and use the increased salary to secure themselves against future shock

equivalently cal would have to hire pilots at market rates too
so if they need to hire captains it would not be cheap
plus cal has been getting new planes as we speak and in the midst of hiring new pilots(junior)
so all that financing of those planes needs to be propped up by flying the planes
planes make to fly, not parked up on the ground

trying hard to buy back customer support

why not just generate customer listing from their computer and send everybody the refund voucher instead of putting the onus on the customer
