The three minors and two adults who were arrested by police after they used an imitation M16 rife to terrorise people while driving along Munroe Road in Cunupia last night, appeared in court this afternoon.
Abdul Aleem Mohammad 18, Zaheer Mohammed 18, Shakeel Ali 16, Richard Sonny, 17 and Zubair Ali 13 were all remanded in custody to reappear in court on 20th April 2015.
They were charged with assault, common assault, possession of an imitation firearm, unlawful possession of a walkie talkie, possession of dangerous weapons, namely knives and a taser. The boys were members of the Islamic School in Madras, Cunupia, the ROSHADI Foundation.
It is alleged they were driving in a Toyota Rav 4 in the early hours of Sunday morning when they pulled alongside other vehicles and used the imitation M16 to scare persons in other vehicles. They were arrested after several reports were made to the Cunupia Police station.
This morning they appeared before Magistrate O'Connor at the 1st magistrate court Chaguanas. The charges were laid indictably and they were not called upon to plead. Zaheer Ali and Abdul Aleem Mohammed both 18 were remanded to Golden Grove prison but placed on TT$150 000 approval bail to be approved by the Clerk of the Peace.
On bail, they are to report once per week at the Cunupia police station, every Saturday by 6 pm and curfew hours to be indoors by 630 pm. The same conditions were set for Richard Sonny 17, Shakeel Ali 16, Zubair Ali 13. The minors were remanded to the Youth Training Centre (YTC). Defence attorney Fareed Ali appearing for the minors raised the allegations of being beaten by task force officers. Richard Sonny suffered broken 3 front upper teeth. Shakeel Ali was ordered to be taken to Mt Hope Medical Sciences Complex for treatment for a beating he also received after which he will be taken to YTC.
