Lets see how modern health care handles ebola as compared to the cultural spread seen in the african cultural practices, this with the arrival of the american doctor to US soil...........in the meantime do yoy know there are succesful ebola vaccine studies but becuase its not seen as profitable pharmaceutical companies have never developed or produced such..

A vaccine was actually used on a german microbiologist who stuck her hand with a needle 4 yeaRS AGO ...though untested it was used under compassionate use...

Just Wow! The Brutal Truth.

ZR and KJaglal must be thrilled!!

Ebola vaccine 'does not exist because it mainly affects Africans', claims top doctor

Pharmaceutical companies are unwilling to invest in vaccine research because it only affects a powerless minority, Professor John Ashton claims
Response is similar to that for Aids, in which media, politicians and scientists only took notice when it started affecting western countries
More than 700 people have died in four countries across West Africa since March, in what has become the biggest Ebola epidemic in history

Professor John Ashton said the virus must be tackled as though it was in Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster

Pharmaceutical companies are unwilling to invest in vaccines and research to cure the deadly Ebola disease because it is only killing Africans, a leading UK doctor has claimed.

Professor John Ashton, the president of the UK Faculty of Public Health, has claimed no cure for the disease has been discovered because it so far has only affected powerless minorities.

He likened the response to that of Aids, for which treatments were developed only when it started affecting western countries.

The current Ebola outbreak - which has no vaccine, no cure and kills up to 90 per cent of victims - is currently ravaging the West African countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia.

There have been 729 deaths from 1,329 confirmed cases of Ebola in this year’s epidemic - making it the largest Ebola outbreak in history.

Writing in the Independent on Sunday, Professor Ashton said: 'We must respond to this emergency as if it was in Kensington, Chelsea, and Westminster.

'We must also tackle the scandal of the unwillingness of the pharmaceutical industry to invest in research to produce treatments and vaccines, something they refuse to do because the numbers involved are, in their terms, so small and don't justify the investment.

'This is the moral bankruptcy of capitalism acting in the absence of an ethical and social framework.'

WHO director-general Margaret Chan has also warned the virus is currently moving faster than efforts to control it.

She said: ‘This outbreak is moving faster than our efforts to control it. If the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences can be catastrophic in terms of lost lives, severe socioeconomic disruption and a high risk of spread to other countries.’

Speaking at a meeting in Guinea’s capital Conakry, she told the presidents of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast that the virus could be stopped.

But she said that cultural practices such as traditional burials were a significant cause of its spread.

Meanwhile, Emirates, the Mideast's largest airline, said today it had halted flights to Guinea because of concerns about the spread of the Ebola virus.

The Dubai-based carrier said flights to the Guinean capital of Conakry were suspended beginning Saturday until further notice.

The airline will continue flying to the West African nation of Senegal, which borders Guinea, saying it 'will be guided by the updates from international health authorities'.

I am grateful for this thread op.
The factual infor. provided is certainly very useful.
In light of the inadequacies of our public health authorities to deal with any kind of out break starting with the common flu,it is clearly up to each of us to do what we can to reduce our risk.
Infor. in this discussion is very valuable.

The relevant authoriies, i did surveillance when we had sars, h1n1, and since those timea the ministers of health was advised to add flir or thermal cams at the ports of entry,,, to this day non is provided ,,everytime a disease cycle manifests they b.shyt us.. now more than ever we need proper port health surveillance, to detect incoming sick passengers who may be carrying a potentially deadly contagion.

This will only work in a perfect society where we record all migrants crossing our borders. We don't even know how many illegal and undocumented people we have in TT! And from the perspective of said illegal alien, he or she will avoid any kind of institution in order to fly below the radar. Ebola could be on our doorsteps and we would be non the wiser until people start to hemmorhage in public and the panic sets in.

What is worrying is that though the organism remains genetically stable since it was first discovered in terms of its ability to infect (virulence) the body . Alot of medical personnel who have taken complete precautions have been infected

Conspiracy theory - Ebola is classed by the WHO as a class A biological warfare agent because of its ability to be manipulated under laboratory settings, in order to be spread by droplets. Under natural circumstances it is only spread by direct contact, but who is to say what the heck is really taking place right now in Liberia etc.

Fuad: T&T ready to tackle Ebola virus

http://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2014-08- ... bola-virus

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan is assuring the nation that T&T’s healthcare system is fully prepared to deal with an outbreak of the Ebola virus. In a telephone interview yesterday, Khan said the ministry has been closely monitoring the virus following several outbreaks in Africa. “The virus was contained and then it resurfaced. We have been monitoring this to see how best we could improve our own systems,” Khan said. He said locals travelling to and from Africa must have themselves checked by a doctor if falling ill.

But, he said, the virus has a 21-day incubation period and therefore symptoms would not be immediately detected. “We are ready. We have things in place and we are fully prepared to deal with any outbreak of an Ebola virus. We also have surveillance methods in place regarding international travel. The Ebola virus has a 90 per cent fatality rate and that is very worrying,” Khan added.

The Health Minister said he was considering introducing thermal cameras at the ports of entry to prevent the spread of the chikungunya virus, commonly called ChikV. A thermal camera, also known as FLIR (forward-looking infrared), is a device that creates an image using infrared radiation, which is heat. The measurement of the infrared light illustrates and makes visible the heat radiation from the object.

About Ebola
• The Ebola virus belongs to a family of viruses that causes haemorrhagic fever and has a mortality rate of up to 90 per cent
•The virus is transmitted from an infected person via his/her body fluids and secretions, including saliva, blood, semen, urine, stool, and sweat. A common way it is spread is through objects, such as needles and soiled linen, that come in contact with infected body fluids.
• Early symptoms may be flu-like and include: headaches, fever, joint pain, sore throat and fatigue. As the disease progresses more serious symptoms develop such as diarrhoea, vomiting, a rash, and external and internal bleeding.
• The incubation period—the time interval from infection to the onset of symptoms—is two to 21 days, during which there is no risk of transmission.
• Countries affected by the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa include: Guinea (336 cases), Liberia (100), and Sierra Leone (473). Resulting in over 600 deaths, the current outbreak is the worst ever.
• No vaccine is available for the Ebola virus.
• No cure is available and treatment is limited to supportive therapy, which includes oral rehydration and intravenous fluids.

Also something to take a look at, is the timing in which the disease broke out ...same time when the America is having the first ever in history summit with over fifty heads of state (50) of Africa to strengthen ties between America and Africa...Looks to me like someone didnt really want it to happen...because the heads of state were asked to be QUARANTINE ........

Ironic how the tobacco leaf which has been the cause for so much death, is used to produce the antibodies for this secret serum.

Its the same vaccine that had incredible results on tge primates it was tested on....the vaccine. As well as attenuated serum can be produced in any modern lab by expert hands.the lab that produced this actually have only 9 staff

Havn't read everything and may have missed an answer but one of my questions is;
If the Ebola Virus is carried by while animals like monkeys etc.,how is it we havn't heard of any mass fatalities in the wild life population.
Further, how do these suspected primate carriers survive this aggressive virus?...Have developed a immunity to the virus.

Think it has to do with how viruses attack different organisms. I have read if mass primate deaths attributed to Ebola in the past.

The carrier is not of the primate variety but usually of the bat family. Carriers don't usually die and maybe primates generally don't interact with bats hence few stories of large number of other animal deaths.
