SJC is a Catholic institution and this student is Muslim. While nothing is wrong with that it (to me) creates the notion that whatever institution Muslims go to that the institution needs to change and conform to Islam and Muslims. I have never heard about Catholics or Hindus going to ASJA (which I do hope happens) but it is something to think about.

SJC is a public school because it receives funding from the state. It did no favours for this child...she made the marks for the school and the school had no choice but to accept her on their admission listing.
The child got in on the merit of her score and not on the kindness of the school. Furthermore, public schools are compelled to respect the religious rights of their students for to do otherwise would mean that they be contravening the law and would disqualify the school from receiving public funding from the state.

In Trinidad there Government Assisted Schools and Government Schools not public schools. In a Government Assisted School yes the Government gives funding but the respective denominational board still gets to set rules for said school.
