Policeman laid to rest
By RHONDOR DOWLAT Thursday, October 21 2010
NATIONAL Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy was absent at yesterday’s funeral service for accident victim PC Renauld Dopson and instead sent a letter expressing his condolences to Dopson’s grieving parents.
The letter was delivered in front of mourners, during the service, to Dopson’s parents, SRP Michael Dopson and his wife Zorina, by Deputy Commissioner of Police Maurice Piggott, who himself extended condolences to the family.
Also absent was Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs and Member of Parliament for Couva North Ramona Ramdial. However, weeping police colleagues of Dopson were very much present as they mourned alongside his parents and girlfriend Giselle Dass.
Southern Division Assistant Police Commissioner Fitzroy Frederick, Insp Joseph, Chairman of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC) Dave Persad, CTTRC Chief Executive Officer Waldron Smart and President of the TT Crime Watch, Ian Alleyne, were among the mourners.
The funeral service was held at the house of mourning at Second Avenue, Ghany Street, Edinburgh Village.
Dopson was also given a gun salute send off at the Chaguanas cemetery.
During the first eulogy, Dopson’s cousin Diana Daniel revealed that one week ago Dopson told his girlfriend Dass, that he knew he is going to heaven. She explained that Dopson made this statement after he received a religious e-mail from his sister, Victoria.
The service was officiated by Pastor Wilfred Samaroo of the Mission for Christ Church in Caparo. Subsequent to his message, Samaroo offered fervent prayers for healing and a quick recovery for WPC Wendy Timothy, who was critically injured in the accident, in which Dopson was killed.
Dopson and Timothy were carrying out traffic duties along the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, in the vicinity of the Freeport flyover when the driver of a white Lexus motorcar, who overtook a line of cars, on the left southbound lane of the highway, slammed into the officers.
The driver of the Lexus, police said, is from San Juan and sustained no injuries. She, was however, taken to the Couva Health Centre where she was treated for shock. Up to late yesterday no charges were laid against the woman as police sources said the investigations could very well go the way of an inquest.

Their dreams of a "perfect" life together however ended when a car, driven by a University of the West Indies student, slammed into him as he was directing traffic on Sunday afternoon. Dopson's colleague, Wendy Ann Timothy, was seriously injured in the crash.
No mention was made of the 27-year-old woman who was driving the car that killed Dopson along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, near the Ato Boldon Stadium.
Investigators said motor manslaughter charges were expected to be laid against the driver.
