Ironically, I took this photo just a few days ago to show someone who left T&T 25 yrs ago.

You can see the overhead train track located in Claxton Bay. I also understand Knolly's Tunnel had trains passing through back in the old days.

It was the PNM, under Eric Williams, who agreed and decided to stop the trains!

They said the rollingstock had become too expensive to maintain and upkeep.
Yes under the lobbying of car dealers and a metal scrap dealer.

Nah it was a good decision.

Tiida/13/14/almera/cube drivers woulda constantly have them thing seeing pressure today - whether is getting it derailed, or trying to overtake/squeeze tru and getting their back bumper bend up, or just plain right off.

Them thing woulda spend more time park up in VMCOTT under repairs, than on the road/tracks.

Been doing some research but came up empty. Why was the railway stopped here? Besides not being feasible to the govt?

Probably because it was too difficult to steal money from it.

The government doesn't create something specifically to solve an issue, first someone has to eat ah food like they did with the 250 million dollar "feasibility" study on the Rapid Rail, a study completely made up so they can throw away money because a University grad with no useful skill in life needs to make money for the school to justify these overpriced degrees they sell.

In places like China they just get sheit done, doesn't matter what it is. If it's needed for the betterment of the country and the communist party it gets done and for a fraction of the price. Here in the West we rather spend half the budget on an imaginary "feasibility study" and then cancel the project halfway and claim we have no money after everybody eat ah food. This scam isn't unique to Trinidad but also in the USA where they have one of the most backward public transport system in the developed world it is a total joke compared to Europe and Japan

Zoom have the answer from another ched:

zoom rader wrote:A scrap iron dealer that sold the trains to Brazil.

It was a collaboration between him and the then new car dealers lobbying PNM to scrap the trains.

French Creoles made a mint with new car sales and insurance.

At the same time NP was formed.

Also Eric Williams was bussing the railway union at that time.

The Rapid Rail idea by Manning was too expensive. When Rowley brought back the idea, IDB wasn't going to fund it. They were willing to fund that Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system instead but since it was a Kamla idea, it was ignored.

In China they do sub standard work.

They would not dare try that abroad
