Mr MTX, you posted up some good stuff there. Can't sleep is one of my favorite tracks of all time....the cosmic gate remix is a classic. And although I can't take on Tiesto anymore, 10 seconds continues to be an amazing tune. His sunrise albums were great.

I've never heard the original version of Offer Nissim's "For Your Love" it's pretty nice, but check out the remix from Sied Van Riel...this tune is on constant rotation at home and driving. It's the kind of tune that sounds that's meant to be played @ a minimum 320kbps on a good system.

and to think this is what it all started from

Roland TR-808
In the late seventies and early eighties, Roland seemed specialize in electronic music instruments that were under appreciated while they were in production, but became quickly became classics.

The TR-808 was created originally as a tool for studio musicians to create demos. It was also used on some early R&B and hip-hop tunes. Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" uses it prominently to create a smooth groove, while electro cuts from Africa Bambaataa and others used it to create new rhythms. "Planet Rock" is 808 and not much more, and it became one of the most influential tracks in black electro music.

http://www.synthtopia.com/synth_review/ ... R-808.html
The most famous early electronica production that featured the 808 is probably Cybotron's album Clear. Clear set the pattern that a lot of electronic dance music imitated.

About this time, DJs were beginning to use the 808 and other drum machines in unique ways. Chicago DJs would play the 808 over, between and under other tracks. By doing this, they could mix tracks together, and create marathon sets. The 808 became prominent in dance music productions that came out of this culture, and house music was born.

The TR808 has been a staple of electronica since then. It is used in dance, techno, hip-hop trance, and other styles.

The 808 is known for its deep kick drum, snappy snares, and bizarre cowbell sound. The sounds can be individually tuned and tweaked, and they have separate outputs. This lets you treat the sounds individually externally, throwing custom EQ, distortion or reverb at the various sounds. The 808 doesn't include MIDI, because it was made before MIDI was created. Instead, it uses DIN Sync. This lets it hook up to machines like the TB 303 and synchronize. Some 808's have been modified to support MIDI, and many musicians use MIDI-DIN sync boxes.

The 808 sound can be heard in the work of many electronica artists, including 808 State (of course), BT, Richie Hawtin, Jean Michel Jarre, Orbital, and The Prodigy.

It listed originally for $1,195, and has kept it's value well. 808's sell on Ebay in the range of $800-1000.

Roland TB-303
One of the most important musical instruments in recent music hitory, The Roland TB-303 was a failure at its intended purpose.

The 303 was designed to be an "automatic Bass machine". It was introduced in the early 80's along with the TR-606 Drumatix drum machine. The two were relatively inexpensive, and were intended to provide a rhythm section backup. Meant to be a backup machine for practicing or for demos, the TB could be programmed with 16-step patterns that could then be arranged into songs. Unfortunately, it was difficult to program and more trouble than it was worth for most musicians. Roland stopped producing them after only 18 months!

In the late 80's, they could be bought for almost nothing in pawn shops. Around '87, DJ's in detroit began tweaking the knobs of a TB-303 while the bassline played a sequence. Paired with a TR-909 drum machine, it created a unique danceable sound. The rest is history. The TB-303 became a part of most of the electronica styles since then, including acid, house and trance.

Several features of the 303 give it its unique sound. First is the accent. The accent can be triggered on any step, and it adds a little voltage to the VCA and the VCF. This makes the accented notes seem louder and brighter than unaccented notes.

Several other aspects contribute to its unique sound. The slide is constant, no matter what notes you jump between. The filter is an 18 db/octave resonant low-pass filter. Most other analog synths used Moog-like 24 db/octave filters, or 12 db/octave filters. The filter effect is modified by five knobs, which adds a great deal of flexibility.

In performance, the TB is rarely used as it is intended. Instead, musicians program a simple 16-step pattern which loops continuously, while the performer tweaks the various knobs. The musicianship lies in knowing which knobs produce various effects, and doing this in a fashion that brings the music to crescendos and climaxes.

Because of its seminal place in the last 15 years of electronica, the TB has become one of the most imitated and revered synths of all time. Prices for 303's run up to $1,000, or even more if it is in pristine condition, or has desired modifications. This has inspired dozens of imitators, most notably the Novation BassStation and the Future-Retro 777. The 777 is the only new synth to capture not only the unique sound of the TB, but also the unique sequencer.
