kamala has been using an American team for some time now as her strategist team. Most of them are boarded in Maraval, using state funds I have no doubt.

Regarding the UNC poster.

We dont need more schools. The number of student in a classroom has fallen in half in the past 25 years. The number of students has remained stagnant while the number of schools has increased.

We also dont need more hospital buildings. What we need are the health centres to be upgraded and adequately staffed 24-7.

Housing we do need. But unfortunately we cant seem to build more than 500 a year.

What are the health center hours now? Not like 12 hrs a day 7 days a week? Wasn't it like 2 days a week before?

It was 5 days a week, some offering more services though. Will give PP credit for that, although there isn't equity in the system. All centres should offer the same services. I had to go out of my district to get medical screening because the one in my area is limited

Racism Splits Trinidad's Ranks
Feud Between Indian Leader, Black Businessman Reflects Society Struggling With Identity
August 23, 1997|By LARRY ROHTER The New York Times

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago _ — In the end, as one of this Caribbean nation's leading intellectuals put it, ``everything gets framed in terms of race here.''

The latest episode began when the prime minister, whose grandparents were indentured servants from India, called a prominent black businessman a ``pseudo-racist.'' The businessman answered by taking the prime minister to court.

For almost three months, the dispute between Prime Minister Basdeo Panday and Kenneth Gordon has riveted this ethnically and religiously diverse country, raising issues of press freedom, race and class relations. In July, Police Commissioner Noor K. Mohammed said his department had uncovered a vague plot to assassinate or kidnap Gordon and had detained several suspects.

Gordon, a communications magnate whose interests include a newspaper, The Trinidad Express, and ventures in television, responded to the prime minister's attack by resigning in protest from the chairmanship of BWIA, the national airline partly owned by the government.

But he also decided that Panday had defamed him with the label of ``pseudo-racist'' _ meaning a particularly cynical manipulator of racial feelings _ and filed suit against the prime minister.

``What is at stake here is much more than an ordinary instance of one person denigrating another,'' Gordon said. ``I think it is important for the prime minister to understand that he is not above the law, that anyone can be held responsible for his actions.''

Panday, who has long felt that the predominantly black-owned press uses race to insult Indians, defined the issue differently.

``I do not believe that freedom of the press includes the untrammeled right to publish lies, half-truths and innuendo about anyone,'' he said. ``And Gordon maintains that he has an untrammeled right to do so.''

Reporters' and lawyers' groups have criticized Panday and his government, contending that his remarks are part of a broader effort to control and intimidate the press. But the prime minister has garnered extensive support in poor rural areas, where much of the Indian population lives.

Which one the housing or the hospitals ?

How many hospitals, clinics and health centres they have right now ? Go ahead and count them. We dont need more. What we need are for the existing ones to have more services.

SFGH seeing almost half the country. More hospitals and health centres needed to be built to ease the pressure...constantly overworked and overdrained. I hear somebody say boy go work and get your own house.

Childishness all around, but understand that the PM had a letter from the Debates Commission stating that the 30th was the date. I believe that there is a date that both can make, but it would look like capitulation to move from the dates that both want.

It's all a bunch of hogwash. Each one setting up the other. They both trying to get the advantage over the other, one through the Debates commitee and the other through CNMG.

I'm hear a lot of upset in the UNC camp over their campaign. 6 weeks from election no major candidates as yet, smear Rowley campaign not working and just lacklustre pulse on the ground.

I blame the TTDC for messing up this debate and giving the PM an excuse for the 30th July. It has to be after nomination. If Kamla put back up Glen and Sharma for their seats, all that would be legitimate discussion for the debate. CNMG from radio to TV has become a mouth piece of the UNC (not the govt) and that sham tonight is underhand tosses to the PM (No Section 34, LifeSport, CLF, Reshmi, OPVs or any topic that hangs over the PP).

A sound candidate should be prepared to debate anywhere.

They both are looking to cop out because their visions and plans are weak and superficial.

Kamla is pressing forward because she knows Rowley would not show and if he had agreed to show then she would have backed out. Which comes first: the chicken or egg?

It's far easier to spew political pecong on platforms than to be forced to stay on topic and focused on the issues.

Why was the DC bypassed? They hosted previous national political debates with few complaints. From whence cnmg and ken ali came with this debate talk? Is there going to be a live audience in the studio to witness the proceedings? Who is the moderator? Many questions are unanswered.
Anyways, imma tune in

no live audience at least up to yesterday, Ken Ali said the studio is too small, the format I'm hearing of is a panel of three asking questions and a PNM supporter/ former UNC candidate is one of the panelists. Of course all can change over the course of today
