Gun theft at transit sheds
Imbert: Illegal weapons stolen from transit sheds
People have broken into transit sheds and stolen illegal weapons from packages which were of interest to international law enforcement, Finance Minister Colm Imbert disclosed yesterday.
He was responding to an urgent question in the Senate, at the Red House, Port of Spain, from Opposition Senator Wade Mark, on what measures were being taken by the Customs and Excise Division to allow citizens to clear their goods in time for Christmas, in view of the extended delays in clearing goods at the ports.
Imbert said Customs had extended its working hours to 11 p.m. and had deployed additional staff in an effort to deal with the delays in the clearing of imported goods during the Christmas season.
However, there was limited space for the examination of goods at private transit sheds, he said.
“We are talking about 150,000 packages expected during this month, perhaps more in November (when) there were 167,000 packages, and we have particular problems with transit sheds.
“One transit shed was closed down because its security systems were totally non-functional and unknown persons broke in, tampered with packages and removed items, which we suspect are illegal items such as guns and ammunition.
“That is one transit shed. And I am told that that transit shed was not even aware that persons had broken in and stolen things from their packages because their security systems were not working.
“(At) Another (transit shed), the Customs was tracking packages of interest identified by international law enforcement to contain illegal weapons and these packages disappeared from that transit shed. They still cannot be found. That (transit shed) was shut down as well.
“You see, you never hear about these things because it is not appropriate to make complete public statements on these matters for reasons of security. But I thought it necessary to say these things now. One hand can’t clap.
“The Government is doing the best it can, but the couriers do not wish to provide advance package information and the security systems are not of the best. So we are trying our best, but understand, you are dealing with 150,000 packages, some of which could contain ammunition,” Imbert said.
Packages can’t be found
three months later
Independent Senator Anthony Vieira asked whether Customs would expand the number of transit sheds and increase its manpower going forward. Imbert said in the case of the two transit sheds which were closed, it had taken a very long time for the owners to achieve compliance.
“We are talking about CCTV camera systems not working. We are talking about people entering a transit shed, a bonded warehouse as it were, and removing items. We are talking about packages that have disappeared and the owners of the transit shed cannot locate them up to now...three months later, they can’t locate the packages, and these are packages of interest to international law enforcement.
The solution to all of this is the Trinidad and Tobago Revenue Authority. That is the solution. And it is ironic that the Opposition opposes the Revenue Authority bitterly but wants improvement in efficiency at Customs,” Imbert said.
Imbert said apart from the problem of limited space at the transit sheds where packages are cleared, there was also “the recurring problem where the couriers do not provide advance information on their consignments”.
But notwithstanding all of that, he said the working hours have been extended at the transit sheds to 11 p.m.
“Additional Customs officers have been deployed. In fact, the Customs and Excise Division has had to deploy Customs officers who would normally work in the baggage hall at Piarco airport to transit sheds to deal with these courier packages, which in itself is creating some issues,” Imbert said.
He added that he received a WhatsApp message from the Minister of Works and Transport yesterday morning, in which he talked about the fact that Customs officers had been redeployed from the baggage hall to the transit sheds.
“(Customs) are working around the clock and also deploying all available Customs officers,” he added.
Come now, I know who you talking about. This was an agreement the company had with residents in the zone because it had no nearby electrical infrastructure from the normal provider. So in other words, them was getting current for free and still getting.alfa wrote:There are quite a few of those illegal connections on the Petrotrin/Heritage supply lines in places like Point Fortin and Santa Flora and they're so brazen they actually have in house transformers to facilitate said current stealing because the voltages are 440/220V and need to be reduced to 220/110V . Can't touch these guys either, they so bad when power goes for maintainence etc they come in the compound to complain about them losing power. One of them get wood the other day via same illegal connections and nothing change
